Your last session ended unexpectedly...

Featured Replies

At startup, I have to constantly go through this screen. Have the Community folder setup and have never actually had a "crash". Since the update, this "last session" screen, along with a very stuttery opening "movie" is becoming annoying, to say the least. Did some searching but, have come up empty handed, so far. Oh, and did a complete delete and reinstall, to no avail. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

In 2020 there is a blank text file running.lock dropped into a folder that flags MSFS to insert that last session ended unexpectedly screen on startup. And back in 2020 you could manually remove that file to get back to normal. I'm not sure about 2024

Thanks for the response.

That particular directory doesn't exist. You can get into the sim either way by selecting continue or safe mode but, each time you start, you have to choose one of those. Makes no sense.

If you have a decent file search utility, such as ultrafilesearch, you might search for the file named running.lock or similar anywhere on your C drive. Should take about 20 seconds. Instead of an hour with the search feature in file explorer. Delete or rename that file.

Thanks for the tip. Did a full search of my c drive....nothing found.

*.lock produced 90 instances of roaming.lock

Ok wow my issue seems to be a Steam issue.  Unlike MSFS2020 and many of my other steam games, 2024 doesn't show up in the recent games in the Steam shortcut pinned to my taskbar, so I right click/pinned to taskbar MSFS 2024 while it was running, and that seemed to work just fine before the big patch this week.  I went as far as uninstalling the sim and starting to add config stuff back a little at a time.  I was launching it from inside steam at the time.  Then I re-pinned to taskbar while it was running, next time I launched it from there.  Got the safe mode prompt at start.  I haven't even loaded a flight yet, I've just been loading to main menu and exiting after.  Again no errors in the window event viewer.  Not sure why they won't let the sim be pinned to the jump list in the Steam shortcut.  So I have to either open up steam or go right click it in the systray if I want to launch it.  I don't want a bunch of shortcuts piling up on my desktop.

Huh...

Wouldn't have thought of that. I run everything in Steam from the taskbar w/o issue. Tried from Steam and no safe mode screen. Also, when having to click continue from the safe screen, the loading bar shows "VFS Activating packages", rather than just "Activating packages" when running from Steam. From taskbar, the loading cinema has quite a few major stutters but, from Steam, smooth as can be.

Definitely, as you say, a Steam issue.

I guess I can put up a shortcut. Beats waiting for the safe screen and then another mouse move to click that. Horse apiece.

I’m also really annoyed by this because Steam seems to have removed the ability to pin games to the recent items in its taskbar shortcut like Windows “jump lists”. I still have games in it but can’t add new or even one that I used to have in there and removed at some point. So I either have to open up the Steam app, right click in the systray area, o put a shortcut via Steam on the desktop.

Think I got it to work from the taskbar. Give me a bit and I'll make sure it's solid. Running it now.

From Program Files (x86) / Steam, right click the Steam exe and pin to taskbar.

Right click on the Steam icon on the taskbar and then right click on the Steam icon, directly above "unpin from taskbar" and click properties. In the target window, paste this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 2537590

Let me know if that works for you.

Yep that works.  Mine was slightly different since I have Steam in C:\Steam, I try not to put stuff in Program Files or the (x86) one because even with admin rights MS still does funny things with those folders and some games in the past have had issues with things like mods/etc.  I also changed the icon by navigating to the MSFS 2024 exe and telling it to use that so I don't have two Steam icons next to each other.  I can still use the original icon from the Steam installation to right-click and access pinned games.  Too bad Steam seems to have removed the ability to do that in the last year 😞 (add games to a pinned list like Windows Jumplists)

edit:  I also noticed the massive loading video stuttering when using the game exe directly pinned, the method that was giving the Safe Mode errors.

Glad it works. Did the same thing with the icon as well. Didn't want to show up right away but, don't have to look at the steam icon now.
