Fenix Aircraft Radio Stack

Featured Replies

I have a radio stack question for the Fenix (applies to all 3 models).

Per the image in the link, I want to be able to transmit and receive only on frequency 132.375 in VHF2 so I setup the buttons pointed by the red arrow as shown.  This works fine.

Concurrently, I want to have the in-range frequency 130.000 ready on VHF1 but do NOT want to receive/hear transmissions until ready so I setup the buttons pointed by the yellow arrow as shown.  However, I can still hear chatter on this frequency.

How do I limit both send and receive to 132.375, and have a valid, in-range frequency on the other side ?

Two options…

1) Switch to VHF2. (The buttons below 130.000 in your screenshot)

2) Twist where your yellow arrow is pointing all the way to the left (VHF1). It’s a volume knob.

You shouldn’t be transmitting on 133.000 with your current setup. Is that what’s actually happening?

On your question on what's actually happening.....my "current" communications are with 132.375, works fine, this is the red arrow.   The next Center is 130.000 and I want to have the radio tuned to it but have it muted.  As you can see, the buttons to which the yellow arrow is pointing (the VHF1 radio transmit and receive buttons) are both OFF.  I am hearing chatter on this frequency anyway.  This is the problem.

I don't understand this.  The captain's side is using VHF1 but transmitting/receiving on this radio is OFF as I explained above.....yellow error so the question is why am I hearing chatter on a radio whose receive button is OFF.

I guess I can do that but that's not the point.  The fewer buttons I have to twist the better.

Now here is a question on a point I am unsure, just noticed it.  On the FO side both the transmit and receive buttons for VHF1 are ON.  Could it be that it's the FO side that's causing the problem ?

In your picture:

VHF1 is tuned to 130.00.

The F/O radio panel is listening and transmitting on VHF1, so you'll hear chatter from 130.00.

VHF2 is tuned to 132.375.

The CAPT radio panel is listening and transmitting on VHF2, so you'll hear chatter from 132.375.

You are hearing VHF1 because the F/O panel is set up to listen to VHF1.

If you don't want to hear 130.00, then just select the F/O radio panel to listen and transmit on VHF2 instead of VHF1.

Normally, having a radio station ready to go wouldn't be done the way you're doing it. If you want to be on 132.375 now, and pre-load 130.00 but not listen to it, then you would do this:

Tune VHF1 to 132.375, and have both CAPT and F/O listening and transmitting on VHF1. Then put 130.000 in STANDBY on VHF1. When you want it to be active, hit the green double-headed arrow button between ACTIVE and STANDBY, to transfer 130.000 to the active frequency. Now 132.375 goes to standby, and both CAPT and F/O are listening to 132.000.

Usually, VHF1 will be for ATC and both pilots will monitor it. VHF2 will be for Guard (121.500), company, or ATIS, and both pilots would monitor it as well.

I hope this helps.

Helps a lot and thanks for confirming on why I am hearing VHF1.  I am aware of how VHF1 vs. VHF2 should be used.  The reason I am violating the standard is to have as many upcoming frequencies pre-tuned as I can so I have minimal interaction with ACP when things get hectic.  This leads to non-standard COMM practices but I am the lone ranger in the cockpit !

Thanks & Happy Holidays
