Can someone tell me how do I designate in the FMC to go to the alternate airport after a missed approach? I;'m on the route page hitting the alternate airport button, and nothing is happening. The destination isn't changing. I just wasted a 2.5 hour VA flight I had to exit out of because I couldn't get the FMC to work right. I couldn't even get it to go direct to the airport using the FIX page. I only got 10k hours in this thing, you would think I would know this by now.

I only know about the B744 NG FMC.  When we go to an alternate we normally make those changes in the current RTE page (normally RTE 1) or possibly activate RTE 2 if it is preloaded for the alternate.  The ALTN page is for ETA and Fuel estimates to potential alternates.     

A normal scenario would be telling ATC we want to go to our Alternate.  ATC gives us an initial heading to give us time to get the new routing in the FMC.
