Chromecast 2nd generation outage. 4 days and counting

Featured Replies

As reported in BBC:

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckgzm1lgv22o

Key points (from several sources I've read):

  • Chromecast 2nd generation and Chromecast Audio devices have a factory-set certificate, valid for 10 years.
  • These certificates expired last Sunday, rendering all these Chromecasts (mine included) INOP.
  • 1st-gen devices had certificates that lasted longer, and are thus unaffected by this problem. 3rd-gen ones have their certificates slated to expire next year. So far, they aren't affected by this outage.
  • Google asked users not to factory-reset the device. In the meantime, they are working on a fix for this problem.
  • The fix would be very hard to implement on factory-reset devices. They would need another fix.
  • After 4 days, I see conflicting reports: ones say a fix is being rolled out today, while others say that the fix is still days or weeks away.

I don't watch that much TV (I prefer to sim), but there's some stuff I can't watch right now because of this issue. I hope it's back for the F1 race on Sunday 😂

Apart from me, has anyone of you been affected by this?

Fortunately, it was the former: yesterday I turned on my TV, just to see what happened. Instead of showing a beautiful photograph, my Chromecast started updating. Less than 10 minutes and a couple of reboots later, it was ready for action. Problem solved, just in time for the F1 race😁
