May 24, 20251 yr Today, I thought to myself, in my recent couple of flights, I've visited the (remarkable) region of Scandinavian Peninsula located near the top-of-the-world and explored bits of its beautiful and rugged landscape...that is so remotely (physically and mentally) separated from these (monotonous) flatlands of Lake Michigan...🙂... (BTW, Chicago to Narvik/Norway distance (ENEV is my destination today) is 5,000+ flight miles; see below). For fun, I checked a bit on FlightAware. Here e.g., is one way one can travel from KORD to ENEV: Take SAS Airbus A333 (A330-300) from (KORD) Chicago (non-stop) for 4,400 miles to (EKCH) Copenhagen (9 hours 26 mins) Continue on with SAS Airbus A20N (A320neo) from (EKCH) Copenhagen (non-stop) for another 900 miles to (ENEV) Harstad/Narvik (2 hours 17 mins) So, the total flight distance is (exactly) 5,300 miles...Oh well...For now, this Xbox/TV will have to do...🙂... Anyway, before I bid farewell to this part of the world, I decided to take a low & slow trip across the Scandinavian Mountains of Sweden and Norway (otherwise known as the "Scandes"...rhymes with the incomparable "Andes"...🙂...) ... All this is accomplished, within our fantastical world of virtual aviation, as I'm now seated on my imaginary pilot's seat...🙂...next to this window and looking out into the yard. The first squirrels...🙂...of Chicago summer are seen just outside the window frolicking about the trees along with their younger ones. And the bumblebees of this year (native to the eastern and midwestern U.S. states, including Illinois), have re-appeared like clockwork, busy in their function as (expert) pollinators, moving from flower to flower (that are recently bloomed and prettily colored), collecting pollen and nectar...in a (somewhat) glorious (and rare) sunny day around here... Back to the Scandes mountains...For this flight, I've chosen to fly the classic DHC-6 Twin Otter, the ultimate (and versatile) go-anywhere transport, powered by the ever-reliable P&W Canada PT6A Powerplants (see images), engines which are considered to be the leaders and most powerful in its class. I have always had a special fondness for the high-wing twin-engine turboprops (btw, another nice (but newer) such airplane in our SIM is the Cessna 408 SkyCourier, that I'd flown a short while ago). The DHC-6, we must acknowledge, has the distinction (proven and field-tested) of being the most commonly operated turboprop a/c in the harsh and challenging environments of the polar regions, particularly in the Arctic and Antarctica (along with the likes of legendary C-130 Hercules). Who does not recall the bright-red British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Twin Otters...🙂...? I love that striking (BAS) color on the Twin Otter...a livery especially designed for high-visibility in the vast whites of the (icy and snowy) Antarctic region. So, I looked for this specific livery today but could not find one in my MSFS2024 Xbox (neither in Marketplace nor in Library), so, instead, I've chosen to fly this (equally appealing) Shark-jawed and blue-colored Twin Otter for my adventure today. Indeed, these DHC bush-planes have been always among some of the most perennial favorites to fly in our SIM. This particular MSFS Twin Otter SIM, I understand, is from Aerosoft/Asobo. That reminds me that the Aerosoft Beaver (and the Otter) were my very first payware airplanes in FSX...🙂...many moons ago...followed quickly by a slew of quality add-ons in FSX… harking back to the un-spoiled and yet exciting (bygone) times of our hobby...🙂... So, for this post, I depart from (ESQN) Kiruna Airport in Sweden (see my previous post, if you wish), across the Sweden-Norway border, overflying the northern part of the Scandinavian Mountains, for a short (but exhilarating) flight distance of ~80 miles to my destination (ENEV) Harstad-Narvik Airport in Norway (see below my zigzag flight-plan route and custom waypoints on the MSFS/EFB Map). Both these towns, Kiruna and Narvik, are located north of the Arctic Circle, and Kiruna, in fact, is the northernmost town (and airport) in Sweden, so, the choice of this rugged and reliable Twin Otter is indeed the ideal aircraft for my purpose today. The DHC6-300, up to the daunting challenge, performed admirably for my task on this flight, with its (competent) GPS navigation system precisely (and effortlessly) guiding me through the labyrinth of narrow valleys and low mountains of the Scandinavian Range (see images). The touchdown into (ENEV/Narvik) was also routine...🙂...perfectly supported by a [Dir-To] to Fix "FS" of the ILS Runway 17 Approach, and then by the LOC/GS functions of the [NAV] and [APR] buttons provided by the (Bendix King) KFC-225 Autopilot in this cockpit. Hope you enjoy the collection of images, below, of this beautiful region from my (short) flight today...in this classic De Havilland Canada a/c that is one of the last remaining vestiges of the enduring legacy of Captain (Sir) Geoffrey De Havilland... Thanks for viewing...! I wish a good Memorial Day holiday to the folks in U.S. and a nice weekend to all... Edited May 24, 20251 yr by P_7878
