June 30, 2025Jun 30 I know that, compared to some nations, the UK's version of 'superfast full fibre broadband' is a bit of a stretch of the imagination. Nonetheless, my streaming and PC spec, here in Old Blighty, is capable of some outstanding visual results in both the Pimax Crystal Light and Quest 3 and with both MSFS2024 and MSFS2020 when everything is running OK. I also know that I am in good company in that both sims will occasionally (actually, in the scheme of things, surprisingly frequently) suffer an unrequested change in some element - internal or external to the sim - that causes chaos until the good and knowledgeable folks round here come up with some genius fix that most of us would never find in a month of Sundays. 🙂 So when a repeat flight from the previous evening, with the same settings and the same aircraft changes from smooth and sharp to an absolute stutter-fest, then I am sure that I do what many us do - I check all my settings, I maybe 'soften' some of them, convinced that I will remember what I did in case I can turn them back in the future, I boot, reboot all of it up until the evening's gone and, with no flight achieved, shut down and spend the rest of the evening shouting at inanimate objects, 'What have ASOBO/MS/nVidia/etc/etc/etc done NOW????'. I check the forums and find that folks all over the place are having similar problems too. 'See??? What have they changed THIS time???' But what I should remember to ask myself - and I forget every time - is 'has there been any sort of update recently? ANY update. Either sim...' And if the answer is YES, I now try to remind myself that: - I must ignore whether or not I have installed the update. Instead, I must remember that it will STILL affect my performance in MSFS2024 while those folks round the world who DO want to install it, do so. - I must forget the promises that 'MSFS2024 servers have no impact on MSFS2020' - because, mysteriously, I find that MSFS2020 is also not usable during these periods. Same stutterfest with the same pops and crackles and, often full crashes and seizures. An example - the recent small N USA update in MSFS2024. I haven't installed this yet as I am presently trying to master the splendid iFLY 737 Max8 with repeated flights in the UK. However, the impact of the worldwide update, even this small one, knocked out both MSFS2024 and MSFS2020 for me for best part of 24 hours. The following evening, all was back to normal in both sims. I'm going to put a reminder under the fridge magnet: 'Update? However large or small, if YES: go for a long walk, preferably in the mountains with a tent; go for short holiday; read a book...a long one; learn clarinet; do anything except turn the computer back on...'
