C++ 2005 SP1 or C++ 2008 SP1 Runtime Library?

Recommended Posts

Doing a re-install of FSX and associated extras. When searching for newer versions of drivers etc, I found a newer version of the VS2005 C++ SP1 runtime library on Microsoft's download site (dated 8/27/2007, version 8.0.50727.762).But I also see a VS2008 C++ SP1 runtime library. Wondering if the 2008 version is just a newer version of the same thing? Do we need only the 2005 version for FSX? For those in the know - what's the difference?Thanks-Erik

You don't need either one just for running FSX. The only time those are required is if you plan on doing any development work, or some third-party addon requires them...

That's a good point Bill. I should add that I do use the SDK and applications such as SBuilderX and FSX Planner for some simple tweaks and basic development. It's been over a year since the last time I installed FSX from scratch; I do remember being asked by some addon (or maybe somewhere in the SDK) to install the C++ SP1 runtime library but cannot recall what specific install required it. I suppose a more general question would be: will the Visual C++ 2008 runtime libraries be compatible with applications that were compiled using Visual C++ 2005?On a related note, I did see a small window pop up during the FSX-RTM install that installed the pre-SP1 C++ runtime libraries.

The additional redists are only necessary for add-ons. We mentioned this detail because we found 3DPs add-ons who were not aware of their own dependency and were thus failing on end-user machines without the proper VS redist.
