Background

This is a continuation of our flights via Historic Route 66 trip in msfs2024 in the vintage Douglas DC-3 (1930’s). This section of the terrain is again a scenic portion across the US and terrain elevations are definitely getting more hilly and much more rugged as we continue to travel west.

The Route 66 route between Amarillo, TX, and Grants, NM, is a journey through the Texas and New Mexico portions of the historic highway, largely paralleling Interstate 40. You will drive through towns like Tucumcari and Santa Rosa before arriving in Grants, with numerous historic stops and attractions to see along the way. Key stops include the Cadillac Ranch near Amarillo, the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, and a variety of historic buildings and neon signs in New Mexico.

Key stops and highlights:

Near Amarillo, TX :

The Big Texan – Home of the 72 ounce steak challenge!

Our Trip
This is part four which covers historic Route 66 from Amarillo, Texas to Grant, New Mexico. The trip is 336 nm along the historic highway route and contains six intermediate stopovers at: E52, KTCC, KSXU, 0E0, KABQ and NM84 then landing at our final destination KGNT airport which is in Grants, New Mexico. In following excursions we’ll continue to travel southwest to travel the rest of “Historic Route 66” all the way to California!  After this trip, we’ll have come over 1300 miles and only have @ 800 nm to go until we complete the Route 66 journey in Santa Monica, California, on the west coast of the USA.

Flightplan, itinerary (this post in pdf format)  can be found HERE

Aircraft:
This trip along Route 66 was intended to be flown in the Douglas DC-3 in MSFS2024 but as always, please fly your aircraft of choice.

Mod Recommended for DC-3: https://flightsim.to/file/43893/duckworks-dc-3-improvement-mod by Imenes

NOTAM: See note Mike Re: FIX DC-3 Liveries for MSFS 2024 Retrofit Version which outlines how to updated your retrofit DC-3 liveries (panel.cfg) to use the WT msfs2024 avionics package vs using the 2020 WT avionics.

Add-on Scenery:  All airports are in the default sim but if you want some eye candy:

Time and Weather
Prefer to fly real weather if possible but if not, the few clouds or high clouds might make a nice choice.  For takeoff: set the simulator time to @0630 (ish) local.  (This time simulates a dawn flight and so that the sun is behind us and NOT in our eyes for the entire trip as we are heading west!)

Multiplayer Particulars
Date and time: Wednesday, October 29th, 2025 - 1900 UTC, 1400 Eastern

If you want to help others enjoy the multiplayer experience, don't forget to enter your aircraft details on the multiplayer spreadsheet (linked HERE). Your courtesy will save others a lot of time and effort. Thanks!
