Back to 1967 - Frutigen Airport (LSFR) in its original form

Featured Replies

Today, I was intrigued by a small (Swiss) airport scenery in the MSFS2024 Marketplace, of (LSFR) Frutigen Airfield 1967, with the following description:

"The perfect place to begin your Alpine expedition! From here, the flight takes less than 10 minutes to reach the 13,000 ft peaks of the Bernese Alps and the longest alpine glacier, the Aletsch Glacier! Frutigen is also an ideal base for glacier flights.

This scenery contains the military airport from Frutigen in its 1967 shape. Built during WWII, attempts to use it with fast jets in the 1950s were not fruitful (the runway is only 3,000ft) so it remained in use by air transport units (which operated among other aircraft types, the PC-6 and the JU-52). The airport was finally closed in 1997. So, if you would like to bring back a small piece of aviation history, this scenery is for you!"

The site is now an industrial zone. Part of the former airfield is also used by the Tropenhaus (Tropical House), a unique facility that uses geothermal energy from the nearby Lötschberg Base Tunnel.

So, to test this bygone (historical) airport, I took off from its Runway 21, in my de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft; into the nearby (fast rising) high mountains of the Swiss Alps range, and then, after a short tour of the vicinity, looped back carefully into the valley to land on Runway 3 of the same airport.

The (custom) scenery includes farming barns and grazing cattle (see my concluding images below) that were once an integral part of the historic charm of this small airport and the town. The town of Frutigen still exists today nestled in the Swiss Alps, but the airfield (LSFR) is long gone...dissolved into the pages of (Swiss) aviation history...

Hope you enjoy this collection of images...!

Thanks for viewing...!

Thanks for the note, pmplayer. Appreciated.

(Like in my virtual trip, I’m looking out the window now at several inches of fresh white snow on the ground here…with more snow expected. I was also thinking of your recent Concorde posts in the wintry weather…🙂…)

Cheers…!
