January 6Jan 6 Unlike other craft of the era, there was no steam power. The driving power was all pretty mysterious. Andrews had already a string of successful inventions, including a padlock that the government purchased in great numbers and used by the post office department. It was 1864 when President Lincoln called for a demonstration of the airship but the war was over too quickly and none were purchased. Andrews advertised a schedule from Philadelphia to New York City in 1866. An economic depression bankrupted his company after only 2 flights.
