Campo was a military town during World War II and was known as Camp Lockett. It was home to a veterans' convalescent hospital, a 300-bed Italian prisoner-of-war camp in Cameron Corners and an all African-American Buffalo Soldiers Cavalry unit which patrolled the border on horseback until 1944.
Campo is part of the United States-Mexico border. The border in Campo is also the trailhead of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Hinds is the last of five major pumping plants along the Colorado River Aqueduct, which is one of the three major aqueducts that bring water to Los Angeles. It has the highest lift of all of the plants. The aqueduct was completed in 1941, and carries water 242 miles from Lake Havasu, on the Colorado River, to Lake Matthews in western Riverside County. Each of the remote art-deco style pumping stations has a small village to house the operators of the facility and their families.

The National Training Center is part of the US Army Combined Arms Command (CAC). The opposing force at the National Training Center is the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, the Blackhorse Cavalry, who are stationed at the base to provide an opposing force to units on a training rotation at Fort Irwin. In September 2017, a state-of-the-art hospital was opened that provides healthcare services to the Fort Irwin beneficiaries.

Deep Space Station 12 (DSS-12), the first deep space station, was built in 1960 to support the Echo program. This 26 meter (85 foot) hour-angle and declination (HA-Dec) antenna located in Goldstone, California, captured signals transmitted from a horn-reflector antenna in Holmdel, New Jersey that were reflected by a 100 foot diameter balloon orbiting the Earth. In the summer of 1962, the antenna was moved ten kilometers (six miles) to the southern edge of the Goldstone facility. In 1964, the antenna was decommissioned and converted into a radio telescope. The Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) is an educational program partnered with the Lewis Center for Educational Research (LCER) that allows K-12 students the unique opportunity to operate the telescope from a classroom.

The Desert Sunlight Solar Farm is a 550-megawatt (MWAC) fixed-tilt photovoltaic power station approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Desert Center, California, United States, in the Mojave Desert.[1] It was made by the US thin-film manufacturer First Solar but now has split ownership between NextEra Energy Resources, Clearway Energy, and California Public Employee's Retirement System (CalPERS).[2][3][4] It has the same 550 MW installed capacity as the Topaz Solar Farm in the Carrizo Plain region of Central California, making both of them tied for the second largest completed solar plants by installed capacity as of fall 2015.
