Todays flight will take us along the Continental Divide in Southren Colorado. We will visit two major mountain ranges, The San Juan Mountains to the west and the Sangre de Cristo Range to the east. These ranges function as subranges of the Southern Rocky Mountains. We will also be doing a 25 mile stretch deep below the rim at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison as the scenery has been improved and is still a challenge. This flight is 296 miles with 9 landings in very high terrain with two of the landings on grass strips. So you will need aa plane that can handle altitude between 8000 to 13000 ft. and do about 150 for this flight. I will be in my Piaggeo. Here is some history on places we will be visiting Campo was a military town during World War II and was known as Camp Lockett. It was home to a veterans' convalescent hospital, a 300-bed Italian prisoner-of-war camp in Cameron Corners and an all African-American Buffalo Soldiers Cavalry unit which patrolled the border on horseback until 1944. Campo is part of the United States-Mexico border. The border in Campo is also the trailhead of the Pacific Crest Trail. Hinds is the last of five major pumping plants along the Colorado River Aqueduct, which is one of the three major aqueducts that bring water to Los Angeles. It has the highest lift of all of the plants. The aqueduct was completed in 1941, and carries water 242 miles from Lake Havasu, on the Colorado River, to Lake Matthews in western Riverside County. Through The Pass Redux Today's flight is a repeat of a flight we did 2 yrs ago in MSFS 2020. We will be flying over the High passes of the Himalayas in P38s. This flight is 342 miles with 10 stops. This flight will be challenging as most of the airports are at very high altitude and with only 1800' or less runways. Your approach speed will be the difference of success or failure and dive flaps are your friends, so be careful. Most all of this flight is at High altitude so if you are not flying the P38 choose carefully. We will want to go about 200 mph +. SW Colorado Farms and Ranches Todays flight will bring us into SW Colorado to visit some of the back country ranches. These strips will be a challenge especially being at High altitude. We will be spending most of our flight above 8000 ft, and also crossover some passes at 14000 ft. We will see a wide variety of landscapes on this flight. I am going to try my Aerostar for this flight but a caravan will do nicely.
