PMDG now available for PS5. New market for MSFS devs?

Featured Replies

Avsim has character restrictions on the title, but I would have preferred a full title that emphasized a new market for MSFS developers of high fidelity airliners. So the question was whether high fidelity airliners would work on the Playstation 5. But PMDG has confirmed today that their 737 and 777 are now available on the PS5 marketplace for MSFS:

Welcome PS5 Users!

We have been informed that the PMDG 737-800 and PMDG 777F are now available to Playstation users. This is an exciting transition for us, as it gives us an opportunity to welcome many more new simmers to the community- and ultimately that is great for the platform, developers and the hobby as a whole.

We are hearing some new customers experiencing some problems getting their new airplanes to load/run- and we presume at this juncture that there are some hiccups in the MS/PS5 distribution that will get sorted pretty quickly. MS is just learning how to flex those muscles with the PS5 platform- and they'lll be paying close attention. We have taken the step of alerting our contacts in real time as well. Please be patient with forum/discord mods. We are happy to have new friends on the PS5 platform, but please understand that there are a couple of very large corporations sitting between you and us. We don't control the distribution chain/process, but our experience with the MS side tells us this will get resolved pretty quickly.

This is huge news for MSFS developers of high fidelity airliners because it opens yet another whole new market for them to make money from. Obviously, airliners like the Fenix who use an external process, won't work on the Playstation 5. But if the developers keep the design to what PMDG is doing, you can actually have a high fidelity airliner on the Playstation 5.

Ultimately, this is great for the overall health of MSFS. I can guarantee you, when new companies like Vector pop up, they are thinking of the total revenue and profit they can earn from MSFS, across all platforms. This may entice more companies like Vector to pop up out of nowhere, if they know that they can earn yet more revenue from a third platform, which is the Playstation 5. And of course, for current developers of MSFS of high fidelity airliners, it provides a nice revenue and profit boost for them as well, if their add-on works on both the XBox and Playstation 5.

I honestly look forward to more new developers like Vector popping up, if they realize that not only can they make good money from MSFS on PC and XBox, but they can make good money from MSFS from Playstation 5 as well!

if I was a dev the question I’d want to ask is - how much support is MS willing to invest in the PS5 version in light of their strategic shift back towards X-Box only ?

Pretty good chance they will invest a good deal of effort to support it. It has become clear that success, at least financial but also reputational success, comes from having titles across platforms. The days of walled off platforms each trying to have a few blockbuster titles to draw people to purchase the hardware definitely seems to be over. Pretty much every decision in X-Box Studios including the last round of lay-offs are influenced by this change of strategy. Look at how carefully Jorg has been in trying to ensure MSFS works well on PS2, you could feel the sensitivity when he was talking about it at that Expo thing last month. It is an important move for them and necessary if MSFS is going to continue. Perhaps much to the chagrin of PC gamers, the way forward is consoles and more of them.

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

Yeah, Microsoft's strategy now is to deploy their games across multiple platforms. I think their support will be quite good on XBox and PS5, it's a nice additional source of revenue for them.
