Trans_27 Pilot Chase

2 Cessnas collide, 4 dead.

Recommended Posts

Looked like both may have been in the landing pattern,One on down wind,And one entering? It looked like the flap was down on one of the wings in the parking lot. Say a prayer for the relatives:-( With the technology out there, every part 91 and experimental a/c should have collision avoidance equipment.

Very sad. I've flew past this airport a few times before. It does appear that one plane was on downwind, and the other plane was entering the pattern. The downwind pilot was most likely looking at the runway to his left, thus not scanning what's in front of him. My flight instructor once told me that most collisions happen on clear days...because 1. pilots feel more confident and scan less and 2. clear weather actually makes it harder to spot planes against the background noise. I found #2 to be true...spotting traffic a few hundred feet below you on a clear day is super hard, especially over the crowded residential areas of LA: a white plane moving slowly against miles of white roof tops with dozens of cars glaring back at you. *Edit* Here's what i mean. Took this on downwind at my local airport of KSMO (my instructor was PIC so i can take pics). Trying to look for traffic on final @ 500 feet will take a good 3-5 seconds of scanning.http://www.fengzhudesign.com/fs2004/LA_Traffic.JPG-feng
