Moving an airfield in the mountains

Recommended Posts

Hi!I was just experimenting with creating an own mesh scenery using the great tool "srtm to bgl" and now I want to design a white area on the FS-map. The aeropuerto de Rurrenabaque in the Amazonas basin in Bolivia. The problem is that the placement of the airports by MS in South America is much worse than in the US and Europe. After creating the Mesh the airport is located directly in some mountains closeby to the basin. It should be easy to exclude this airfield and to lay some new vtp2 polygons over the old area but the problem is the mesh. I could use some flattens to get the old area to the right elevation but that would have a bad effect on the mountains.I know that it is impossible to "exclude" a flatten made by MS bit maybe there's another trick I could use here?ThanksSasahttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/49598.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/49599.jpg

Hi Sasa:it's possible to decompile the default flatten file and remove or change the flatten of any incorrect airport. I've described my approach for doing the same thing for lake flattens here:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho..._id=15058&page=However, if you're only dealing with one airport, especially a sunken one like this, it's probably easier to fill the hole with a re-mesh function as implemented in Ground2K4.Hope this helps.Cheers, Holger

Thanks for your help Holger, bit I seems that this is not the sollution. It is a known problem that the Ground2k Re-Mesh can't change the flattens set by MS.The more irritationg it is that the Ground2k documentation sais:"This option allows to locally create relief on FS flattens."But the question is HOW? To test if this works I set the whole area of the airport at 0 but the airport flatten has not been involved. The thing is that I just want to exclude this single airfield because it's located totaly wrong. :-(http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/50224.jpg

Hi Sasa. There is no reliable method for restoring mesh in FS9 or FS2002.But FS9 has organised it's files as LOD5 areas. The flattens in your area are named:FL930370.bglWhen I load it into Jim Keir's LWM viewer, I see there are only 5 flattens in the whole BGL. 5 is not so many that you could not handcode them into a new ASM code, and replace the entire FL930370.bgl ( and the AB930370.bgl as well ). You could write them as SCASM flatten code.I do think this is the approach we are heading towards... replacement of the erroneous LOD5 default bgls. It's just too hard to remesh them by any means.Unless there is a trick MS has not taught us, the default flattens cannot be "undone" by code, with a return to the default mesh. The entire BGLs must be replaced. Dick
