Lord Howe Island & Norfolk Island

Featured Replies

Hi, does anyone have any terrain mesh and/or scenery .BGL's for Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island (to the east of Australia)? Thanks, John.

No- but I do have a good map of Lord Howe (which I got when I visited it) . It shows contours and I have been thinking as to whether it could be used to "hand design" a LHI mesh . Most mesh sceneries are done using satellite data (I think) but LHI is small enough maybe to be done by hand . The question is -- does anybody know how to do it!!For those who don't know Lord Howe Island -- it is widely claimed to be the most beautiful island in the world. Barry

Hi, Lord Howe Island is a pet subject of mine (as is the Short Sandringham Flyingboat) I had the pleasure as a kid to fly on the Lord Howe run 4 times. You can read about it here...http://www.users.bigpond.com/smoothp/short.htmI believe that one of the great people at SatPac ( http://www.satpac.pcsa.net.au/ ) has Lord Howe on the agenda, but I think there are some technical issues to overcome tho.In the meantime, I am making do with the old OzPack scenery and an "enhanced" FS98 Sandringham model. The ozpack site seems to be off the air, but the scenery files are still available here ...http://www.moby58.org/hangar/scen_oz.htmhttp://www.users.bigpond.com/smoothp/lh3b.jpg

Barry, you're dead right about the island being the most beautiful in the world. It is also one of the least "commercialised" islands as well. I say to people, don't bother to go if you want paragliding, or a pretentious gin and tonic by the luxury swimming pool in a resort. Lord Howe is a quiet country town in the middle of the pacific.Magnificent.

Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands for CFS2 is due for release within a week or so. It will be part of the New Caledonia for CFS2 package. I have not tested it in FS2002 as of yet...but in CFS2 it looks pretty darn close...Lord Howe that is. Norfolk is still in the editor. I'll see about posting it here to Avsim as well as my normal haunt over at Simviation. The mesh part of the download just might work as intended in FS2002 as well.Cheers, Rolf :)

Hi Rolf,That sounds great - hopefully it would work in FS2002 also! Are the files just .bgl in CFS2 also - ie do you just add the scenery into a ADD-ON SCENERY folder in FS2002 just like any other scenery?I look forward to it. If you'd be kind enough to post a note here so I get notified I'd be grateful.Regards, Captain_K.

CFS2 and FS2002 are practically the same sim....bgl files for both...import many of the planes back and forth etc.Cheers, Rolf

Very impressive!Good luck with the final touches.C_K.

...look for it at http://www.simviation.com in the near, near future...it'll be under CFS2 scenery.Cheers, Rolf

Thanks, I will keep an eye out for it.If I run the Lord Howe scenery in FS2002, do you know if the runway will be just dirt as in CFS2 (?) or the original FS2002 sealed runway?Cheers.

Just remove all the files in the scenery folder inside the Lord Howe Island folder except the ones that have lod5 lod8 lod9 and lod10 (multi-res mesh works in CFS2....dunno about FS2002...if problems occur....just use the lod9 or the lod10 bgl). As well, remove the texture folder. This will prevent 2 airports from showing. Again...this mesh is untested in FS2002....I really do not know what it will look like....but it can't hurt to try :). FS2002 is off my HD at the moment....sigh.Cheers, Rolf :)

Hi Rolf,Pardon my ignorance here - I have now downloaded the Lord Howe scenery files, ta! However, I really do not know which files I need to copy across to FS2002? There seems to be many more files than you mention above. Which files should I copy across to my fs2002addon scenerylord howe islandscenery and fs2002addon scenerylord howe islandtexture folders? Also, if I wish to keep the fs2002 sealed runway and not use the cfs2 dirt runway - how does this affect which of your files I should copy across.Sorry to trouble you on this, but I've never used cfs2 scenery in fs2002 before. Many thanks, C_K.

Just use the one folder that says LordHowe_mesh. The other folder is the airport for Lord Howe....doubt it would work proper in FS2002 anyways. The mesh is reported to work VERY well in FS2002.Cheers, Rolf :)It's ready over at Simviation in the CFS2 scenery section...
