August 5, 200223 yr Well I got my first holding pattern instructions last night in a short hop from KORD to KGRR.As a newbie to RC2.2 (and holdingpatterns) I would like to know if someone in this forum have a link to some info on how to enter and execute a holding procedure.my biggest problem is to decypher the ATC instrutions to when to enter holdingpattern and how to fly it.I have found one page which explains holdingprocedure :[http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/howto/hold2.htm]I have searched the various posts in this forum for info on holding patterns. As I understand it all holdingpatterns in RC are to be entered 40 nm from the fix.If selecting a 20 mile pattern is this distance the length of the outbound/inbound legs ?Let's say I am 40 nm from the fix and enter a 180
August 6, 200223 yr Commercial Member you can go left or rightyou are correct, 40 miles from the last checkpoint, turn 180, and head outbound on the radial the controller gave you. travel until you are 60 miles from the last checkpoint, turn 180 back in.repeat until you are cleared outyou can also choose delay vectors, instead of holding pattern, and the controller will tell you what to do, and when JD Read my blog
August 6, 200223 yr So you are allways headed inbound to the fix in RC2.2 and don't have to worry about pattern entry (parallel, teardrop or direct).ThanxBest regardsStevie(EKCH)>you can go left or right >>you are correct, 40 miles from the last checkpoint, turn >180, and head outbound on the radial the controller gave >you. travel until you are 60 miles from the last checkpoint, >turn 180 back in. >>repeat until you are cleared out >>you can also choose delay vectors, instead of holding >pattern, and the controller will tell you what to do, and >when
August 6, 200223 yr >So you are allways headed inbound to the fix in RC2.2 and >don't have to worry about pattern entry (parallel, teardrop >or direct). That's correct. Boring, but easy. :) Left or right turns are both OK...your choice. If you want to practice the various hold entries, you can request a "visual" approach once you are contacted by arrival. Once you do that, you can fly published instrument approach procedures (or anything else you want), some of which incorporate holds. There's a great little free program called Holding Patterns that figures out for you what type of entry you need to make and how to fly the hold. You should be able to find it on Avsim and/or Flightsim.com.Sidney [KPDX]
August 7, 200223 yr Greetings Stevie,I'm glad you found Jacques Zahar's holding tutorial, It sure covers a lot of bases. A while ago, the AVSIM Educational Resource Center published a Special Edition Tutorial: Flying IFR by author Andrew Ayers, Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia First Officer. This was also an excellent document in which lesson 4a covered holding patterns. AVSIM doesn't carry it any more and I can't reach the author to ask permission to put it back on line. So I've just E-mailed a private link to lesson 4a.Now as far as searching this forum for posts on holding patterns, there have been none since the change of format which brought us to year 0. HOWEVER, on August 26, 2000, a thread was initiated which lasted 2 months and has now become legendary. You will notice that Sidney, who just replied to your question, was one of the major participants. This amazing discussion on the fine points of holding patterns is what I have enjoyed most in this forum. You're in luck! I did capture that thread and hope you enjoy the reading.http://www.mcgill.ca/biology/staff/rlamar/...rum_Holding.htmCheers,
