What do I get wrong

Featured Replies

I have made a flight with RC4 from Spokane KGEG to Boings field KBFI.The RC criticism said I do things badly and that I'm supposed to fly the filed plane and be aware of where I am all the time. The flightplan was KGEG GEG EPH NORMY KBFIin Aerowox Beech King Air 200My confusion starts when I'm close at NORMY. Here the ATC tells me the fly a heading away from Normy (last time 150) and continue my descent to 7000. Why?I do so and after a while I'm told that I'm off my course and order me to make 180 deg turn back north. I can recall ever being told by ATC to resume own navigation which the critique said I must do.Then I'm cleared for ILS rwy 13R and I got vectors that took me to the right of the ILS radial but no further vectors to the left to intercept the ILS.I'm confused about what I should do without instructions and what to do only after being explicitly told so by ATC.Another thing that does not seems quite normal is that I during these flight at occasions came rather close to mountains. Also according to the flight chart I should descend to altitudes which I was never cleared to by ATC. For example last assigned altitude was 3600. But the chart says 2200 after NOLLA.Good luck it wasn't for real.

Hi there,Several issues here. The start of your problems sounds like a missed crossing restriction. The controller will give you a specific height you must be at when 40 miles from the arrival airport. In this case you probably received an instruction 'to descend to 7000, I need you level in 30 miles or less' when about 70 miles from arrival. It sounds as if you failed to make that altitude in time so, instead of handing you to arrival, RC gave you vectors to fly while completing the descent.Unfortunately we've discovered a bug and while flying the vectors you are given in this situation you get told you are off course. That will be fixed in an update. The vector you get when cleared onto the ils is a vector that will cause you to cross the localizer at a 30 degree angle. It's the pilot's (your) responsibility to turn off this vector and capture the localizer. The controller assumes you can do this without further assistance! The RC controller will assign you the vectors and altitudes he wants you to fly at. These will often be different from those on charts for specific approaches. If you want to fly a specific approach using a chart just ask for an iap. This informs the controller what you intend to do it and he'll let you get on with it. You have essentially told the controller you know what you are doing and don't require further assistance. All the best,John

I just wonder is this like reallife also? I think that in reallife at least there should be a possible of this request being declined. Is that also so in RC?

What could I>do in the meantime when this happens? What you should do is descend at a rate that will ensure you get to your assigned altitude BEFORE the fix with the crossing restriction. While the update will fix the problem that occurs after a crossing restriction is missed, as a good pilot you do not want to EVER miss your crossing restrictions. If unable to comply with a crossing restriction as assigned to you by ATC - you should let ATC know about it.-michael

Hi there,I don't know a timescale yet on the fix for this. For now, if it happens, ignore the 'off course' warnings.Once you reach the correct altitude head back in towards the airport. Once you are handed to approach everything should work fine again. As Michael says making the crossing restriction is the best solution for now!In real life, yes, the request for a particular approoach would often be declined. Pilots do what the controller tells them! However in the virtual skys we know folks want to be able to practice flying by the chart so our controllers are very accomodating. The vector to intercept the localiser will be given about 1 minute before you cross the localizer. The message is something like Fly Heading xxx until established on the localizer etc. Make sure you respond promptly to this message. If you are too far from the airport to pick up the signal from the localizer it's then up to you to get yourself roughly lined up on the approach heading and to 'fine tune' once the signal is received. All the best,John
