HIGHLIGHTS

Although I’ve never flown onboard Edelwiess Air, it has always been an intriguing airline ever since Just Planes initially filmed their operations back in 2014. This time around Just Planes will be featuring the operations of Edelwiess from Zurich to Cape Town onboard the majestic Airbus A340-300. While this program featured one round trip flight, it was certainly packed with highlights making it a must have video for your collection.

One of the highlights I particularly enjoyed came at the very beginning of this program. With most cockpit videos, the focus tends to be on the pilots (which is only expected), but it was a most welcome change to also see the role of Dispatchers being thrusted into the spotlight. Seeing how important a role they have in preparing each flight might be surprising to most viewers who are unfamiliar with the relationship between a Dispatcher and the flight crew.

The second highlight focuses on the duties of the flight crew. Throughout this program, there were many enlightening presentations where the pilots interacted with the viewers with details on procedures, briefings and their personal history in the field of aviation. Perhaps the most outstanding of these presentations was the tour of the cockpit which allowed viewers to learn much more about the fabulous A340 which happens to be one of my all-time favorite aircraft.

The final highlight I’d like to mention focuses more so on the scenic aspects of this program. From departure to landing, this program gives the viewers numerous perspectives from within the cockpit of the A340. The most outstanding of them all was the departure out of Cape Town. After departing for Zurich, our pilots requested the scenic departure for one last opportunity to admire the beauty of Cape Town from above. Adding to the excitement of the moment, the controllers offered our pilots the option of flying via their own heading. Of course, being able to control your own heading while flying a scenic route around city offers you the opportunity to not only admire the beauty below, but also to appreciate the wonder of flying. As an added bonus, this program also features a brief look at some of the main tourist attraction in Cape Town that may stir your curiosity to visit South Africa.

Ultimately, I think this program was well put together and it nicely highlights the professionalism of the Edelwiess flight crew and the joy of flying the A340 to an amazing destination such as Cape Town, South Africa. If you are an aviation enthusiast at heart and especially a fan of any Airbus aircraft, this is surely a documentary worth buying! I certainly hope that Edelwiess continues to open its doors to the aviation community to showcase not only its product, but also the thrill of aviation.
