Runway information received too late to use a STAR
I have only recently started using STARs with Radar Contact, previously accepting vectoring to the ILS.My problem is that by the time I have heard from the airport approach control (through RC) and received the active runway information it is too late to use a published STAR as I have passed the transition point. Is there a way around this or am I misunderstanding what I should be doing?Best wishes, John M.

Problem with shift1 screen in virtual cockpit
Thanks for the further comments.I thought it was my unfamiliarity with the virtual cockpit that was causing my problems. It looks as if what I am experiiencing is normal and has to be worked around in one way or another.I have wondered about EZDOK. What I was not clear about was whether the views were preset and, also, whether it would solve my problem -. it looks as if it would. I will look up the EZDOK web pages,Best wishes, John Morgan

Problem with shift1 screen in virtual cockpit
Thanks for the replies.I am trying to get into the 2D panel because until I started with the 737ngx I always found the 2Dscreen (MD11 ) easy to use. I have been t rying to get accustomed to the virtual cockpit but I experience difficulty in, for example, inserting VOR frequencies and various buttons including the autopilot on button, because the radio panel and button is well out of alignment in relation to my eye. I have read the introduction provided by PDMG and use the suggested captain's position which is well to the left. I have started experimenting with the shiftt key + number to change panels but this is not as useful as having everything directly in front of you as in the 2D panel ,I know I couild change my eye position temporarily using the keyboard but this seems fiddly. If you can direct me to a helpful guide on these matters then that would be very helpful,Best wishes, John Morgan

Problem with shift1 screen in virtual cockpit
When i use the virtual cockpit and press shift 1 I get a similar screen to the 2D screen. However I cannot change the values on the panel eg the altitude or the heading value. The buttons show the usual hand icon when I try to change them but nothing happens on this screem. I notice that the values do end up being changed in the main virtual cockpit but not on the Shif 1 screen. All the other screens accessed with shift 1 appear to work normally.I have installed SP1 but I don't think I have upgraded to SP1b.Is this normal or am I missing something. I suppose an easy work around is to press F10 to get into the normal 2D screen. Can someone confirm whether or not my shift 1 screen experience is normal?Best wishes, John Morgan

Repeated generation of file indexes on FSX start up
Some time ago, I can hardly remember it, I copied the whole of my fsx files to a different disk partition with a differrent letter. I also at some time or other installed additional scenery,Though I used the availabile utitlity to alter what I think was the registry entry to reflect the new disk letter, whenever I load up fsx it takes far longer than normal as on each occasion it spends time on what it calls:'generating scenry file indexes'and then'buildng database for new files'I would be gratefulf for suggestions as to what I should do or look into in order to rectify things,Best wishes, John M.

MCP Freezes when amending waypoint altitude
Thanks again Mark for your interest.I have been trying to insert an altitude 'AT' 3000 into LANAK near EGPH after leaving TLA on a EGCC to EGPH flight. Its taking quite a lot of time to narrow down the possibilities but I have within the last day been able to ascertain a situation in which I am able to insert 3000 successfully into LANAK. It appears that if I am descending I can enter AT 3000 altitude. However if I attempt to insert AT 3000 into LANAK before take off then the screen freezes. 'AT or ABOVE ' seems to work in all circumstances.I think the best thing is for me to do some more testing so that I can be more specific about the exact circumstance when this freezing up occurs and I am then likely to come back on the topic via this forum,Thanks again,JohnMorgan

MCP Freezes when amending waypoint altitude
Thanks Mark, in attempting brevity I was too economical with the important details!I am running FSX with, at least SP1 and SP2 . If I go to the 'about PDMG' in the FSX add on menu I get Version(App) 10,0,61335,62. From the files available I see I have used, some time ago, the installer to update to v1 10.051 . I also have PDMG-MD11_FSX_Changes_v1 20 00555 which suggests that I am up to v1 20 00555 but I am not absolutely sure as I have come back to the MS11 after perhaps 18 monts away.It happens on more than one way point. I ahve only tried it on approaches, E and W, to EGPH. I rather think that if I use the 'at or above' box in Vert Rev then no freezing occurs. I have wondered whether it ws owing to my inserting unrealistically rapid altitudinal changes but I do not think that is the case.Because it happened in flight and froze up I have taken to amending altitudes before I take off. The altitudes I have wished to amend are all descent altitudes. The fact that if I get it wrong I have to spend time getting out of FSX and then reloading it has made me a bit reluctant to experiment further with the exact cirumstances which is why I have landed in this forum. Thanks very much for your offer of help,Best wishes, John Morgan

MCP Freezes when amending waypoint altitude
I am experiencing a continual proble in amending altitudes in the MD11 MCP flight plan. When I put in a new altitude, eg for descent, in the flight plan (using Vert Rev) against an existing waypoint the whole screen freezes up and I have to control-alt-delete to remove the marked 'FSX not running' in the task manager . I fare no better when I try enetering eg 250/50 directly into the flight plan window,.I think this issue has come up before but I cannot find a solution.in the forum.I am using Vista 64I would be grateful for advice on this matter,Best wishes,John Morgan

Usual length of 747 sim flights
I have been successfully flying the PMDG 737 series for a while now and I have been considering moving up to the Queen of the Skies. However there is one point holding me back. I have many commitments and I find that flights of up to an hour or so can be satisfactorily fitted in . This length of flight with the 737 fits in to a number of actual 737 routes and to me this helps with the realism of the simulation. My problem with the 747 is that to approach reality I would need to get involved in much longer flights. At a guess 2-3 hours or much more. I don't have time for this and I feel flying it on unrealistic short routes would detract from the experience.I am wondering what length of flight others carry out in the Queen of the Skies and whether there are real world routes I could fly with it which are around an hour in length,Best wishes to all, John Morgan

Engine Displays not showing fully
Thanks Ross, got it going after accessing the menus you indicated. Why didn't I think of that instead of reading again and again the Cockpit and Systems manual pages! Still I learned something from it. I now see that the Registration and Revision Information contains details of the Styles pages,Best wishes, John

Engine Displays not showing fully
When starting from cold in my PDMG 737 the only circular engine displays I am seeing are the N1 display and the EGT display. I also have a digital reading for fuel flow and three circular setting at the bottom right showing, I think, fuel state. Nothing else.I suppose I have missed some setting or other which is staring me in the face but I would be grateful if someone could help me.On opening up FS2004 I do get a message saying "Required flight file is corrupt or can't be found. FS will now try to load the default flight". From that wording I doubt that it is the cause of my question but I the occurrence is worth mentioning,Best wishes, John Morgan

Auto Throttle will not Arm

Auto Throttle will not Arm
I suppose as a newcomer to PMDG Next Generation 737 I am overlooking something obvious but ........On many occasions when I click the switch to arm the autothrottle it will not stay in the correct position. The annunciator shows fleetingly 'throttle armed' message or some similar wording but then nothing. The middle warning light (which says A/T and something else I cannot read)flashes on and off and I can clear it by clicking on it. But I still cannot get the auto throttle to arm.I would be grateful if someone could help, perhaps by listing the conditions which have to be met before the autothrottle can be armed,Best wishes to all, John Morgan
