engine sound at altitude
Yes, it is an unfortunate fact that jet sounds in fsx are never going to be totally realistic for all stages of flight withouth doing something to control them externally. Turbofans sound completely different at altitude than when operating at sub 10000ft. Up at a typical cruise level for example all you hear is a very deep rumble from the combustors, even at high engine speeds. The buzz saw only comes along when the tips of the fan blades reach the speed of sound relative to the air density, which in normal circumstances only happens in the dense air below 10000ft. Same for thrust roar, this deminishes as the aircraft increases speed and the shear effect caused by the differential in exhaust and normal air flow is reduced. So really the same engine will sound unrecognisable up at FL350 compared to on the ground. To get these kind of effects the sound engine would have to be bypassed or rewritten completely. Mind you, if anyone could do it it would be PMDG!

I still can't land this thing properly..please help
@Ian; thanks!@Mark; Totally agree, the late phase of the landing is far from scientific, some of the advice being given is the sort of thing that the autoland system would use when it is making its calculations at what ever polling rate per second; when you are closing on the ground at over 150 mph you do not refer to instruments in this way, it is the visual picture that counts. That is why as Mark says there are IFR minimums, you MUST have visual with the runway [even a few lights will do, just enough to have a surface to react to] in order to land the plane, only certain autopilots are able to land in zero zero conditions and only then after certification per airframe.Trim should be sorted way before 100ft, if you need to trim after this either you are not using the trim for what it is intended for, or the attempt should be abandoned. I would add that trying to hand fly and trim any simulated aircraft is actually incredibly difficult to do well, as you just don't have feedback from the controls in order to do this properly. For those who do not know how we trim a real aircraft, basically you hold the pitch attitude you want and then use the trim until there is no longer any force acting throught the controls, once this has been done the attitute will be held hands off providing speed and power are constand, which they should be unless the pilot takes power. without this force feedback in the sim it is very difficult to do and you will never ber perfectly trimmed unless you use the autopilot or happen across the right setting by luck. Thanks

I still can't land this thing properly..please help
Hi Steve, Don't post much around hear but thought I might add my view; All of what has been said here is valid in my experience, having had the NG for a while the most notable thing about it is that it does behave like a real aircraft unlike many other addons and as such will take time to adjust to.The most critical aspect to any landing is a stable approach and spot on speed control; If the aircraft is under proper control during approach then the landing should follow. Speed on the NG is really inportant as it is a slippery plane, only made worse by ground effect as mentioned, you really need to cross the threshold at Vref and allow the speed to come off thereafter during the latter stage/flare of the landing in order to compensate for the increase in lift caused by the ground. Flaps 40 is also best reserved only when you want to get the lowest possible speed as it increases the tendancy to float, flaps 30 is best for most situations.Timing is important also but I would echo the others in saying that a perfectly smooth landing as revered by many passengers is not really relevant in terms of operational proficiency, so long as it is within what the aircraft can withstand and does not cause people to lose there false teeth etc. all is well! When the weather is poor you really just want to get it down, faffing about 30ft off the ground in a gale force wind with an inch of rain on the runway is not a good idea. Aim to land at a certain point within the first third of the runway rather than worrying about prolonging the flare for smoothness. But again speed is key, even in my little TB200 if you are 5kts over the ref speed it will become difficult to land where you want to. You are probably being too hard on yourself, just get used to doing the basic stuff and with practice you will find that one day you will just happen to grease it without any thought. Think about getting it down safely and the rest will follow.Hope this helps

Praise
Hello all, As a long time lurker on these boards, I have finally been prompted into saying something owing to the sheer excellence of the 737. This is the first addon that has ever made me actually feel like I am operating a real aircraft with real systems and behaviors within FS. To try and put this in some sort of context, this 737 is so much more than a sum of its parts [impressive as those parts are]. I could go on just detailing the many wonderful systems; but what really stands out is the actual feel that you get based on the visuals, sounds and flight model. For example; the engines are the best gas turbine engines Ive ever "felt", by that I mean that they respond so accurately to input; these engines really do "wind up" properly; slow at low speeds, then once they hit around 45% they accelerate with that massive rush of power that hitherto could only be felt in the real thing. Coupled with a sound set so spot on it really does all add up. The flight model supports this audio visual display: aircraft do not respond like cars do [as some addons would have you believe] when power is applied there is a lag and then the airframe catches up with the thrust output from the engines; imagine pulling a heavy trailer with a rubber band. The NGX captures this perfectly; when commencing taxi at heavy weights, you apply some power and nothing much happens for a few seconds, then gradually the pylons take the strain and the aircraft moves forwards in that soft wallowy fashion that all Boeings have. Apply to much power too soon and the 737 will suddenly lunge forward as the excess power comes home. This just covers what you get before you leave the ground! I hope I haven't bored to many of you, but it is these small things and the many other 73'isms that make this addon so brilliant. 69.99 may seem alot to some, but seeing as this has taken at least 5 years work and the fact the end product is so brilliant, it represents supurb value when talking aviation money. Trust me, it really is so much more than the sum of its parts. A massive thankyou to the team who put this together; I can only imagine what the 777 will be like. Keep it up...

744X + VISTA PMDG Menu problems
Hello all, Firstly, great simulation, even though my PC struggles with it I think that as new hardware matures it will give one excellent experience. Now on to my question; I have noticed that whatever I do on the PMDG menu, or for that matter any other addon menu within FS, the settings are never changed [Have tried to get performance enhancements byt adjusting refresh rates/FO display on/off]. Having failed on many occasions, I decided to go directly into the FSX folder and manually change the setting held in the text files. It allows me to change the Integers however when it comes to save the modified file it states: "cannot create the [file path] Make sure that the path and file name are correct"On pressing OKit then gives a save as menu, all the data is correct however it still refuses to save. This I feel is the cause of the problems within the simulator. If anyone knows how to help me It would be appreciated greatly.PS. Notepad was used to editRegards
