  1. How is this "hack" on the sim.dll file any different from "hacking"/"tweaking" the fsx.cfg file to improve performance? Personally, I see no difference and therefore no reason why it should be deemed illegal.
Probably, I don't know though, because the EULA forbids it?

  2. I use the Crucial C300 SSD which is blazing on random reads but there is a concern about what will happen as it fills up. Crucial claims that the current firmware is immune to the kind of performance degradation that showed up in the earlier version so I am kind of testing this out.KayDub
Thanks. The C300 looks very good, but I have heard about lockups in windows 7 when using Sata3 and the Marvell controller, has this been solved?

  3. Guys, thanks so much for all your help!I've decided to go through with the upgrade. My rig will be as follows: i7 2600K, P8P67 Deluxe and I will keep my RAM and see how it runs and then if I feel I need more/better RAM I'll upgrade that too.I one last question: Is there a specific Batch of 2600K that is known to OC to 5Ghz+ or something I can do to increase my chances of not being stopped at 4.8? EDIT: A little OT, sorry: I'm also tempted to buy a SSD to run win7 and FSX on, 120GB should be enough for me, I've read that OCZ Vertex 3 has been troublesome to a lot of people, especially the drive not being recognized etc by the BIOS, is this still true? If so any other fast (random read) SSD's that are reliable?

  4. PS: It is a good idea to upgrade. The FSX performance difference for me from a nearly flawless i7 930 @ 4.3 GHZ to what I have today was substantial in all respects, and well worth it. Go 4 it!
Stephen, thanks for all the help!I have one last question, or two rather, as I said in the start of this thread, I've been looking at the 2500K and a P8P67 Pro/Deluxe motherboard. I have heard different opinions on this, but is the 2600K really any better at overclocking or in FSX? Also is there any real reason to go for the Deluxe rather than the EVO/Pro version? Granted, they are almost the same in price (the mobo's) but I'd like to make the upgrade cheap if the performance difference between the different CPU/Mobos aren't noticeable. The Deluxe has 16+2 in VRM/Phase Power vs 12+2 on the Pro, I've heard from some that it doesn't matter when OCing and that the batch is more important, is this true? Lastly, the 2600K has a higher stock freq and is HT enabled, but afaik FSX doesn't use HT and from the FSX Mark11-bench on this forum the AVG/MIN FPS difference seem to be insignificant, is there any reason why I should go for the more expensive setup? I want to reach 5Ghz so that the upgrade is worthwhile, and if the 2600K is proven to be more OC-able, I'll buy it.Thank You

  5. Hi William,The ram we have is amongst the best there is for FSX. I am convinced that it is a critical part of the great performance I get and 4x2g is best. If you cannot find another stick, it is best to get one that you can downclock to match the Mushkins at 6-8-6-24.If I were you I would send a PM to Kaydub (next above this post). Look what he has!SWAP THREADKind regards,
Thanks for the heads up Stephen. Is there any performance drawbacks to running 4 modules rather than 2? Kaydub, where do you live? EDIT: Depending on where Kaydub lives the freight could get pretty expensive. A 2x2GB 6-8-6-24 1600Mhz Mushkin Kit (serial 996805) is however available where I live. If I were to purchase that kit I would have 5 afaik identical 2GB modules, and I'd be able to run 4x2GB.

  6. Thanks for all the answers. Performance memory is rare where I live (Sweden), that coupled with the fact that my NH-D14 isn't the most forgiving to RAM leaves me only 2 kits (the only ones being sold here, and that fit and are of interest to me): A Mushkin 2x4GB 1600Mhz @ CL7 kit, and a G.Skill Sniper 2x4Gb 1600Mhz @ CL7 Kit, the Mushkin being 25EUR cheaper. Should I go for the cheapest? EDIT: These are the ones I'm talking about:G.Skill Sniper F3-12800CL7D-8GBSR vsMushkin Enhanced Redline 996981

  7. Or you can (temporarily) use all 3 sticks. Lower 4GB in dual channel and upper 2GB in single channel
How about buying G.Skill Ripjaw 2000Mhz Cl9 DDR3 2x4Gb, downclocking it to 1600Mhz, 1.5V and 7-7-7-24? Or will it have any impact to performance versus, lets say a Corsair XMS3 1600Mhz (2x4Gb) CL9? Am I worrying to much about the RAM lol? EDIT: Btw, if I were to buy the G.Skill RAM, is "downvolting" them from the stock 1.55V really necessary? Whats the highest safe temp for the RAM?

  8. Hi! I've been on the fence to upgrading my pretty new i7 rig for a while, mostly because im such a geek :D I'm still not 100% on upgrading as my current comp is handling fsx pretty good. But lets say I were to upgrade...I'm looking at a i5 2500K and an Asus P8P67 Deluxe B3, both seem to be handling the FSXMARK11 pretty fantastic. Right now I have 3x2GB Mushkin Redline RAM at 1600 6-8-6-24, which I am very satisified with; but if I were to go Sandy Bridge, would 3 sticks work? Or would I have to drop one stick and in that case would 4GB be sufficient for flying complex demanding planes like the PMDG 747X/MD11 in FSX on win7 64? If no on both accounts, what is your advice to me? Should I buy a 2x4GB kit? I've been looking at mushkins Dual Kits and I haven't been able to find any with a low timing, most are CL8-9. I've been taught that timings were important to the stability and smoothness of FSX, is this still true with SB?Thanks in advance

  9. The 737 is such a beautiful amazing plane, when I become a pilot I would never ever want to fly the a320neo. It's sooooooooooooo ugly and hidious! Who would ever make something that ugly?
"Air does not yield to style"Unknown (to me) Airbus designerI'm not the biggest fan of the airbus's planes' looks but I think the A340 is pretty cool.

  10. Just an idea from me: What about making the switches for the weather radar functional and even modell the test mode, but just put an INOP label on the WX radar? So we'd have an realistic working (Well actually not working, but you know what I mean) weather radar just like in some NGs in real life! And by the way, I'd prefer having the FS2Crew panels on the ND and the System display like in the MD11. It's best when you can have access to them while looking straight ahead i think.
+1I have seen videos where the TCAS was INOP and there was a "permanent" white advisory message on the EICAS (B744). I'm not sure what the rules are for the WXR, but if PMDG could model something similar I'd prefer it to the buttons doing nothing. Although for me this is a non issue as so much else has been modeled.

  11. The sun will have ceased nuclear fusion by the time to LD757 is out!It was interesting reading you young whipper snappers talking about you first PC games. I remember playing Kung Fu Master at the arcade and "Shuttle" on the Atari 2600!Hail to the king baby yeah... I'll still be buying the Duke, the first game was fun.
Lol, that gives me some perspective. The first PC game i played was Half-Life in 1999. I was 10 years old, way too young and i had a couple of nightmares about it afterwards. But after that I was hooked on FPS games.

  12. Well this makes me a bit nervous... I built my new system about 3 months ago using a ATI HD5770, and have had no issues running FSX. Did I miss something?
Don't jinx it! :( Seriously though, I had a ATI 4870 before my GTX480 and the only real problem I had was the inferior (compared to Nvidia in FSX) Anti-Aliasing. But I only found that out after upgrading, and the 4870 was so old by then that its age was probably the biggest factor, not its brand. I also upgraded to a i7 950 at the same time so I can't really tell. But if you don't have any problems, don't worry, they'll show themselves soon enough.Lol just kidding, its working fine for you, what more is there to say. :(

  13. Personally I would not upgrade from a 9xx-chip, don't fall for all the hype. FSX is FSX an old game written in the early 2000-year on XP code; nothing more nothing less and hardly worth spending the money on. If I was upgrading, because I like computers and I am in constant seek of the elusive epiphany and bragging rights to bench tests, I sure wouldn't spend any more than needed in doing so.That memory is fine and 4GB is plenty for FSX, you will not get an ounce better performance buying an additional 4GB.The difference between 1333MHz and 2133MHz is negligible at best and you would not perceive any difference. If your gig is synthetic scores then go for the 2133GHZ but do me a favor and don't try passing it off in the name of FSX. Call it what it is a pure wanting unnecessary and decadent in the name of a computer hobby. Then when the money is gone you will have maybe two-months of bragging rights before the next big thing hits the block and you can return to feeling small and inadequate and wanting. :biggrin:The beauty of upgrading and why I don’t do it, because by the time one component is obsolete there are usually (read almost always other components that need upgrading). If you are going for the SB then drop the 480 and go to 570 minimum prefer 580..
Seems like you made my later reply reduntant. Thanks for the info. I agree with what you said, and upgrading from my current rig to sandy bridge is probably quite decadent lol. Dropping the 480 is just not something I could see myself doing, that almost doubles the price tag. I'll have to think about all this, as a student I'm not exactly wading in cash, and I may end up not upgrading at all.

  14. you can get a 2x2GB 2000Mhz CL7 ram kit and run it at 1600 CL6 if you want 8GB, but 4GB is okthe 480 is still a very capable GPU
I've some times had CTD's in FSX that were suspiciously close to OOM's, is this more likely because of FSX running out of the 2GB memory and would 4GB be of any difference in these cases or is it enough? 6 or 8Gb just feels safer, but maybe I'm worrying too much?If i can stay with my current sticks of 2gb at 1600Mhz and CL6, I'd rather do that than have to buy 2x4Gb at 1600Mhz and CL6, the 2133Mhz ones are at CL9. I don't get it though, does increasing the size of the individual RAM stick from 2Gb to 4Gb make it slower? Why else would all the 4Gb memory kits from Mushkin be at a higher CL than the ones i bought were?@Jahman: Does Z68 support PCIe 3.0?

  15. Hi! I've been trying to resist it, but I think the geek in me have won. I'm thinking of upgrading my i7 950 to Sandy bridge after seeing the 10-average-fps-jump in the FS11Mark thread.I have 3 questions:1. The 2600K costs about 150USD more compared to the 2500K, where I live. I'd like to keep my upgrade as cheap as possible because my inner cheapskate (the one that lost against the geek) is telling me that it was less than half a year ago since my big i7 upgrade. Damn that sounded schizophrenic lol. So is the 2600K with its HT really worth the extra cost? Is there any performance gain in FSX?EDIT: Just saw that this question has been asked before, 2500K it is then, am I right?2. Right now I have 6Gb of Mushkin Redline RAM (1600Mhz CL6), if I "upgraded" to dual channel I would have 4Gb, is that enough for FSX and Win7 64bit? Looking at Mushkin Redline's 8Gb Dual channel kits, I can only find CL7, right now i have CL6. Is there a CL6 kit or could I "OC" my ram to CL6? I think I've seen someone around here with 8Gb Mushkin Redline 1600Mhz at CL6, was that 4x2Gb?3. Should I buy the P8Z68 Motherboard or will P8P67 pro/evo/deluxe B3 (which version is the best?) do? I recall hearing that Z68 will support Ivy Bridge, is this true? And/Or does it have any other advantages over P67?4. Oops, did I say 3 questions? :P I have a GTX 480, as you can see in my sig. Updating the CPU, mobo and maybe the RAM feels okay, even though its very soon after going to LGA 1366, but if I bought a GTX 570/580 that would almost double the cost. Please tell me that's not necessary? Thanks and forgive me in advance, if any of my questions has been asked before

  16. It breaks ILS course IIRC.Best regards,Robin.
Don't think it does. As Hervé stated earlier, ILS courses are in True heading, so the Magvar update might things like ND-track a little misaligned (probably not though if the airport is done correctly). If you look at my earlier question most of my "problems" were either because I confused Tru with Mag or because the airplane wasn't perfectly aligned with the centerline on startup. Since then I have performed plenty of touch and go's but most importantly 2 successful autolands at ESSA.
