Seriously, you need to get a sense of perspective. No one here is oppressing anyone. Just applying the forum rules we all agreed to abide by.

I think perspective is exactly what I have. I'm looking at the use of "special surveillance" and AVSIM's general moderation practices in the broader context of what's happening in this forum and the treatment of longtime contributors. I think that you yourself have much to gain in the way of perspective. If you take a moment to look beyond this thread and stop pretending that everything in life happens in isolation, you'll find that I'm not spewing rhetoric, but highlighting a troubling trend.

  2.

None of what you are complaining about has happened in this thread. The thread is being actively moderated to keep the peace, that's all. Talk of communism is just silly.

I was referring to the "Special Surveillance." You don't have to beat someone over the head with a club to be repressive. In fact, passive control is just as much a part of communist policing. Whether someone in control of a channel of communication chooses to censor, admonish, banish or assault, the intent and the effect are the same: to intimidate people and preclude the divergence of opinion.

  3.

You really want no moderation at all? Unmoderated forums can be very nasty places, because some people lose all moral inhibition when they post on the internet. Moderation helps stop forums like this becoming like the Wild West with people hurling abuse at each other and generally getting nowhere in relation to the subject under discussion. But staff can't and don't monitor every post so generally have to rely on members reporting abuses to them. In this case they are actively watching the topic, because it is a tinderbox of a subject. The rules applied are no different, so this isn't a restriction on your freedom to say what you like, as long as that is within the forum rules we are all supposed to abide by.

No one is censoring this forum or telling people what they should say, so any analogy to a communist dictatorship is well wide of the mark.

I do think the mods have a place in maintaining order, but there's a sharp distinction between quelling incendiary debates and demonizing anyone who has an opinion. Just take a look at what they did to Word Not Allowed when his FSX setup guide presented itself as an alternative approach to the "Official" AVSIM guide written by Paul J. Word Not Allowed learned the hard way that AVSIM won't stand idly by when a forum user has the audacity to contradict NickN on the topic of anisotropic filtering settings in FSX. Word Not Allowed's thread at http://forum.avsim.net/topic/370594-software-hardware-guide-for-fsx/ USED to contain a link to his guide and the guide by Paul J. People flocked to the thread and Word Not Allowed acquired quite the following, with people posting comments about his guide and how it had helped them achieve better performance. If you look at the thread now, AVSIM has removed the link to Word Not Allowed's guide but left all of the positive comments in place, making it appear as though people were referring instead to the Official AVSIM guide--which has a complete different approach. When I posted in that thread (which is when I found the link to Word Not Allowed's guide, I asked for a comparison of the approaches because I was curious about the differences between AF, bufferpools and the like. The very next day someone asked a question of Word Not Allowed, and someone else replied that Word Not Allowed had been banned. Shortly thereafter, those posts, my post, and several other posts were gone--together with the link to Word Not Allowed's guide.

Now tell me what separates that from communism. It starts subtly enough with scare tactics like "special surveillance," and before you know it they've gone and made someone (and his opinions) completely disappear.

  4. Depends who you ask. For a period of time, the advice was to put FSX+addons and the OS on one drive and everything else (including texture packs like REX and GEX, which don't need to be on the FSX drive) on the data drive. Now I'm hearing that you should put the OS and FSX on separate drives so that the OS isn't making a whole bunch of read requests while FSX is doing its thing.

I say put FSX and the OS on the SSD. Load times will be dramatically improved for both, and once FSX is up and running, the bottleneck is the CPU, not the hard drive, so who cares if Windows is making tons of read requests.

I'm far from an expert though. Just what I've been able to distill from the many guides and forum posts on the topic.

  5. Topic Under Special Surveillance

    *sigh*

This is what the world is turning into... A slightly negative post makes the WHOLE WORLD CRUMBLE. FFS.

I especially liked the use of the word "special."

I wonder who the special surveillance operative is. Perhaps a member of the KGB Spetsgruppa A.

  6. And, as a sidenote, it's quite fascinating to see what kind of thoughts have derived from this thread. The topic starter might not have expected that. Neither did I ...

No kidding! My, how minds wander when we're waiting anxiously for big product releases!

  7.

Come on: The admins could close this thread without a warning. Their warning is a chance for everyone, not just the topic starter, but including the topic starter, to calm down, think, think again, and then, maybe start uttering something that makes just a liiitle bit more sense and might be juuust a little bit more constructive than some of the posts before ...

Thanks, Oliver. But that's exactly the point I'm making (and have made before). The admins should not close threads at all. I agree that the conversation needs to be civil, but, the goal of AVSIM should be to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas. If there are instances of people being rude or biligerent, by all means warn the culprit--and ban them if necessary. (They'll probably ban me in fact just for challenging the regime.) But AVSIM's practices lately have grown increasingly heavy handed and overbroad. I wasn't kidding when I compared their tactics to a communist dictator. History teaches us that such repression of ideas degenerates the fabric of society and polarizes people--all for the sake of preserving the regime. How many people need to flock to Flightsim.com before they see the error of their ways?

  8. @pilot+lawyer, In case you didnt know, there are many flightsim enthusiasts that either never heard of avsim or simply lurk in the forums without evwn registering. To judge someons as a troll just because they just asked a question after being a member for less than a day is pretty pathetic.

So i guess your 467 posts makes you in local legend around here.

    Cheers

Ok. I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. Just be mindful of first impressions.

    Welcome to the forum!

    "Topic Under Special Surveillance

Be advised that this topic is under special surveillance and it can be locked at any time, if any kind of flaming is detected!"

Seriously? Stalin had subtler methods of repression.

  9. Hey PMDG, Captain Spoon here, when will the 777 be released? Will it be possible to also use it with P3D? Just release it already, you guys are taking too long and my interest is dwindling. Is there a release date?

    Cheers

Your interest is dwindling? You mean all the interest you've had since 1am this morning when you joined AVSIM?

I'm calling this one a troll.

  10. I guess it might make sense to move this to the config/setup forum. Any willing mod? [sticks up thumb to hitch a ride...]

My Apologies, it looks like the new Official Software & hardware guide stickie at the top of this forum would make suitable readng for you.

That's the competing guide I'm referring to. The approach in that guide is somewhat different than Word Not Allowed's. I'm just hoping for an honest comparison of the two so I can minimize the trial and error. I know, I know, a little trial and error is the name of the game. But I'd hate to turn a deaf ear to some useful experiences.

And, yes, I've read both guides cover to cover.

  11. Well seeing as how you've got all your hardware sorted out I'd suggest this isn't the right forum for you, maybe the FSX specific one? Maybe a well meaning Moderator will move it for you.

In the meantime get your rig set up and then see what if any issues you think you're having, that should give those in the know some pointers to the right mods for you.

I'm not really sure where this thread should go. I picked this forum because both Word Not Allowed's thread (http://forum.avsim.net/topic/370594-software-hardware-guide-for-fsx/) and SpiritFlyer's link to the AVSIM Official Guide (http://forum.avsim.net/topic/398016-avsims-official-software-and-hardware-guide-for-fsx/) are located in this forum. It seemed logical... ;)

  12. I'm two days away from the estimated ship date of my new Zeus Thunder 2500 from Cyberpower. We'll see if they hit the target date, but that's beside the point. What I am trying to do is gather all the information I'll need to get an FSX setup that is as near to optimum as possible. I'm familiar with the Windows 7 and FSX guides produced by NickN back in 2010. I used those to get my current rig up to snuff. But in order to get maximum benefit from my new Ivy Brigde, I thought it would be a good idea to get the latest and greatest guides. I stumbled across Word Not Allowed's guide and Avsim's "Official Hardware Guide" created by Paul J, both of which are recent and purport to be aimed at setting up FSX on Sandy/Ivy bridge systems. Here is what I've come up with so far for a plan of attack:

    1.) Windows 7 setup - NickN's guide at http://www.simforums...187.html#198187

2.) FSX installation following NickN's advice at http://www.simforums...topic29041.html

So far so good. Next step:

3.) NVidia Inspector and FSX tuning and FSX.cfg tweaking.

And there's where the consensus seems to break down. Over the last few days, I've been trying to differentiate between Avsim's Official Hardware Guide (http://forum.avsim.n...-guide-for-fsx/) or Word Not Allowed's FSX/P3D Software and Hardware Guide. Although they are similar in a number of respects, the approaches are somewhat different in key areas such as Bufferpools, TBM, Affinity Mask, Anisotropic filtering, etc. Up until a few days ago, Word Not Allowed's post at http://forum.avsim.n...-guide-for-fsx/ had links for both the Avsim guide AND Word Not Allowed's FSX/P3D Software and Hardware Guide. For some reason, Word Not Allowed appears to have fallen out of grace and was even banned from Avsim, so I've heard. As far as I can tell, it appears to stem from some rather vitriolic disagreements between he and NickN, but I won't speculate any farther. What's interesting is that Word Not Allowed's post no longer has the link for his guide. It only has the link for Avsim's Official Guide. That's unfortunate for a couple of reasons. First, regardless of any disagreements between Word Not Allowed and NickN, several users have seen great results following Word Not Allowed's guide. Just read some of the replies to his post. You can easily locate the guide by searching the Web, but Avsim's greatness comes from the fact that it is a repository for this sort of information--a one stop shop. Why remove the link? In fact, when I previewed this post, I got a message saying that "You have entered a link to a website that the administrator does not allow links to." Wow, what happened, folks?!

Second, there are some 20 pages of replies in Word Not Allowed's post. A number of these replies are from users describing their success using Word Not Allowed's guide. However, because the link to Word Not Allowed's guide was removed from Word Not Allowed's original post, one could easily conclude that these users are referring instead to Avsim's Official Guide. That's quite deceptive, and this point would be lost on anyone who didn't happen to see the thread prior to a few days ago.

Personally, I don't care who wins the scuffle for the distinction of authoring the "Premier FSX setup guide." But I am very much interested in being able to discern whether people with the new Sandy and Ivy Bridge processors are having better results with one approach over the other. Can we all shake hands and agree to get along? :)

And, if not, would someone with a similar setup to mine at least tell me about their experience using either of the two competing guides? My new specs are below:

  13. I tried FG, but it seems like a step backwards from FSX in terms of the flight dynamics and overall graphics quality (the default 172 panel reminds me of the panels in Sublogic Flight Assignment ATP--circa 1990). The point made about the takeoff roll above is spot on. I know nothing about what goes on "under the hood" in terms of coding, but I can unequivocally say, as a real world commercial pilot, that the flight dynamics are missing the mark at this point.

Anyway, DCS and FSX it is, I'm afraid. Well, until PSX comes out. ;)

  14. I read somewhere that you should stay away from the ti GPUs in FSX. I'd go with the 670, or better yet, the 680.

Edit: Also, are you building this on your own NewEgg style? If so, you should seriously consider going through Cyberpower. You can most likely get into the Zeus Thunder 1000 for about the same price as buying all the components yourself. And, of course, you can let them do all the work, like overclocking your CPU for you--hassle free. I just ordered mine (the Zeus Thunder 2500), and I'm stoked.

  15. I would like to see for example maule for DCSW, then it would be interesting to compare MSF! and DCSW

Yeah, just watch out for AAA.

    And remember...

As you know, the Maule doesn't have the thrust-to-weight ratio of the Mig-28. And it doesn't bleed energy below 300 kts like the Mig-28. However, the Mig-28 does have a problem with it's inverted flight tanks. It won't do a negative G push-over.

This, of course, has been disputed by Maverick. But we'll leave that for another day.

All things to bear in mind.

  16. Flight had potential, until Microsoft took out its knee caps. Unfortunately, it's sort of like Pac-Man--completely static and frozen in time. It is what it is, and there's nothing there to keep the hardcore flight sim enthusiast's interest.

I think MS quickly realized they'd have to let in the 3PDs to achieve the depth and progessive development that make this sort of franchise profitable. And they just weren't willing to see the cash flying out the window like it did with FSX. They wanted Flight to be like Windows--all about Microsoft. They quickly realized that it was going to be more like Linux.

For now, I'll stick DCS World, FSX and PSX (if it ever materializes).

    David,

Please refrain from posting offensive comments at posters on this forum. I believe you should know that this is not acceptable. Telling someone that they need to take lots of medication for posting the importance of appreciating the work of other developers, is totally unacceptable. I have noticed that this topic has an enormous amount of offensive posts which should NOT be tolerated. It doesn't matter how loyal we are to a particular developer; there is no reason to come publicly and completely say negative things about every other developer's product...least yet offend those of us who do enjoy a wide variety of wonderful add-ons from diverse developers.

    Holy Batman!

This calls for a topic bump.

    Forums Moderator,

I know that the posting of these images is against forum policy, which I think Aleksi (one of Beta testers) was unaware of. Please feel free to remove, and we at Majestic Software apologize for the negligent posting of a product in Beta.

    Respectfully,

    Simeon / Kroswynd

Feel free to negligently post a release date. :)

  19.

    Is DCS's P-51 a stand alone game?

No, it's a module. DCS World is the "battlefield" platform with which you can combine one or more of the various modules (A-10, P-51, Flaming Cliffs, which includes the F-15, etc.). They even have a module called Combined Arms that simulates tanks and other battlefield artillery, in case driving a tank is your thing. The best part is that DCS is a multiplayer environment, so that you can not only fly with other pilots but target tanks, SAMs and AAA that are "piloted" by real people. The concept is to create a complete battle environment.

And, if course, with each module you get the plane (or tanks) and tailored missions and campaigns. I assume they are period specific, but I haven't tried the P-51 yet, so I can't confirm.

  20. Hands down, the best option is DCS A-10. It's without a doubt the gold standard now and the most exciting entry in the combat sim market since the Falcon series and Microprose's F-15 Strike Eagle. I will even go as far as saying that it runs so well that it pains me to go back to FSX--even though I love my PMDG NGX.

DCS A-10 is indeed high fidelity, and the learning curve is steep. However, there is a "game" mode that allows you to skip all the complexity. It's too arcadish for my liking, but you may enjoy it. And you never know, you may find yourself tempted to dive in and RTFM. As I said, DCS is the standard, and it's so amazing how real you can get when you're not limited by the FS architecture.

Edit: Although I haven't tried it, DCS just released the P-51 module. You may prefer that, if you're leaning toward WWII.

    Trevor

  21. After seeing scores of flight simulator enthusiasts silenced for voicing their legitimate concerns over the direction of Flight, I must admit that I chuckled when I read that MS had stopped development of Flight. From the beginning this has been a matter of pure economics.

The target market for the Flight project largely coincided with that of the platform game. To pull the complexity out of flight simulator and inject a Playstation Network-esque experience into what was previously a niche technically focused hobby was a mistake. That they ignored the existing community in favor of a new product strategy capable of monetizing the potential that had previously been left to third party developers is beside the point.

In fact, I'm surprised that MS tolerated the 3PD binge for as long as it did. But to assume that you could simply churn neo-flight simulation enthusiasts out of a market distracted by titles like Call of Duty and Skyrim is astounding. MS attempted to address this culture gap by adding things like Aerocache, but they incorrectly assumed that the persistent drive and enthusiam behind the flight simulation genre would be sustained in the process of simplifying the experience. A little market research would have gone a long way.

    Oh well.

  22.

Hello everyone, my name is Jose, sorry, my English is not very good, I'm from Venezuela, I have a problem with FSX and 737 NGX, when I start the simulation and make use of the maximized window with external view or use the instant replay, within seconds a fatal error occurs and the FSX is closed, details of the problem below:

You're using ENB Bloom, aren't you? This is a common issue. Just try to minimize switching between windows, and stay in full screen mode as much as possible. Oh, and crashing on exit is inevitable--but, since you're exiting, it doesn't really matter (my view on it).

  23. Hello @ all!

    I have the follow Problem:

If I use NGX with TrackIR 5, after minutes of flight, the autoflightsystem goes crazy. I get an climbrate of 15000 and some seconds later an descent rate of 13000 etc..

I tried it for few times, without TrackIR I have no problem. (Same weather, same flight)

I checked also out the keybindings, no keys from TrackIR are binded in FSX.

    Does anyone has an idea?

I've never had issues with TrackIR. I've been using v.5 with the NGX since day 1. Make sure you are using a good profile; the Seth Flight profile is what I use. It's available on the Natural Point forum.

Other than that, I'm betting it's an issue with another program.
