More things work on the instrument panel in FSX, though I prefer MSF overall.
FSX has more air traffic, which I like, plus ATC comms.
-
FSX ATC interaction is good.
Machado's interactive lessons can help.
Interactive interaction.
-
Good idea, and do it in small segments.

I figured it out easily using what I learned here.
Since I was flying around when the hunt started, I had to adjust the Navs, so I happened to circle around while doing that , and ended up right on point.
-
Thanks.
That's very clear.
Since I've been learning about VOR, HSI, and all that, I've been aggressively fiddling with dials.
('Don't press that red button'!)

So I'm flying the ICON at night to get the Rabbit Island cache.
I fiddle with the nob attached to the Altitude guage, which also has a small insert of numbers that's set at 29.92 .
As I play with the nob, the altitude reading changes and the 29.92 changes to other small amounts. What did i do, and what does IT do?
Is 29.92 barometric pressure, 'cause I don't know what I'm talking about.
I landed on water and set the Altitude Guage back to zero, but is sea level zero?
And why would the altitude reading change.
I even swirtched ICONs and altitude stayed the same. (I was hoping it would reset.)

Let's see if i've learned anything.
Headed due south at 180 from PHNL.
Used the Maule, set Nav1 for Molokai VOR 116.1
On the HSI, when the CDI bar was horizontal, or perpendicular to flight path is Aerocache.
Yep. At sea level, so don't be at 5k ft like me -

Real quick, I'm at work.
The only chart I use is the maps at MSF.
At Hilo, I have used ILS to land, adding the the length of the runway to know where to hit . And I do mean hit .:)
Oh, ok, so it's alright to look up when touching down. -visual-

"Whether an ILS or VOR / non-precision approach... One must strictly adhere to the approach chart... so I am not sure why InboundFour953 thought the VOR provides vertical guidance or is something to "aim for"... InboundFour953... why did you think this? Maybe all this technobabble about ILS Approaches and seemed VORs should be included this way too? Not that it's a big deal... just want to make sure you get it sorted."
I'm new to this game, and am happy to get this far, with the help of the input of you all.
I aimed for it because I'm in a learning curve: what to do, what not to do.
i'm happy as a pig in S### to be able to loosely follow what is being posted.
i will learn, i will get better.
Thank you for all your help.
Pretty soon i'll be talking S### like you guys. :)

I want to use VOR only, but when I land, the VOR 'tower' is before the runway, i.e. Hilo, and I land hard and early. But I'll get it.
Next day off is next Wednesday. have to wait 'til then.
10 hour work day with commute =13.5hr :Straight Face:

Uhh, I may be wrong, but can't use NDBs on MSF.
-
I used the VOR terminology I learned from J van E et al to figure it out, and I could not do it a couple weeks ago.
In hindsight, I could have just left from Lanai going 030, which is the direction of the runway, flew at 5000 ft, and eventually 'cached-in'. ;)
But I now fly around with zoomed-in cockpit using instruments to try and get around, but still have a lot to learn. Still gotta use external view to check.
-
Just did the new Aerocache:
Kalohi-Pailolo Channels.
Asks for VOR radials.
Figured it out before I flew, using what I learned here, from cockpit.
Though it is relatively easy to find.
I used the posts/links here to set Navs and VOR.
Found it easy to figure out.
I've been flying yesterday and today using instrument panel, sometimes zooming in to block my view, so i could not see.
Though I had to use external cockpit to check myself.
Point is, I learned it here.
Last week, I would not have even considered it.
Thank You.

Just watched the video in the first post.
Good starting point, as the students asked questions I would.
Now I will try and wade through the rest.
Coppy/Paste/Print is my mantra :)
-
Ahhhh,,,50%
Will try that.
-
Well, I took your suggestions and found both the VOR aerocaches using NAV1 and 2, and now I am hooked to learn.
Gives me a new sense of purpose on MSF.

J VAN E and all:
Thanks for the tips.
Printed out the tutorial and instrument panel pics of RV and Maule from J VAN E.
-
Probably due to my lack of experience, but do not see that exact set-up in the RV-6 or Maule.
Would it be a 'similar to' situation ?
-
Thanks for the tip !
Started just before 8am deadline PDT, didn't finish until 8:10am PDT.
It 'let' me keep playing.
Also first time ever trying VOR.
-
I was flying at dusk, but it is a little bright for me.
I've been doing cargo runs an hour before dawn, to get the night points, and the rich textures of the landscape is amazing.
It's really 3D in effect.
-
If one lands too hard, and wants to try again, maybe press 'pause' and return to last checkpoint and try it again.
-
See the submarine across the end of the car bridge?
Also, after last aerocache there, I tried to walk onto the USS ???. But couldn't go up the ramp.
Anyway to get onboard?

Air1:
Thanks for the TV tip.

Staib said:" I talked one new Icon pilot through the process of setting the Icon's comm radio frequency and then having a voice chat using Ctrl + Tab on that frequency."
Huh?
What?
Huh?
This is possible?!?!?!?
