  1. Thanks Word Not Allowed, will try changing the FFTF, however I notice blurries even at 0.60 zoom. Martin Also there are times when my FPS drops below the golden 30....should I try a lower LOD radius also?
  2. Sorry Vic that's a mistake, it's running at 4.4Ghz currently!
  3. Hi All Recently bought a new rig for FSX (see spec) and have configured my machine and FSX installation as per Word Not Allowed's guide. I am having trouble with blurry textures which I thought I'd seen the last of! I wasn't expecting this to be an issue under FSX. Altogether I'm pretty underwhelmed about my graphical performance on the new machine The pic below shows what I mean - it should be obvious from the pic what the problem is. Is this normal, even on high end machines with overclocked CPU? Here are parts of my fsx.cfg: [TERRAIN] LOD_RADIUS=6.500000 MESH_COMPLEXITY=100 MESH_RESOLUTION=25 TEXTURE_RESOLUTION=29 AUTOGEN_DENSITY=3 DETAIL_TEXTURE=1 WATER_EFFECTS=6 [Display] ChangeTime=4.000000 TransitionTime=4.000000 ActiveWindowTitleTextColor=255,255,255 ActiveWindowTitleBackGroundColor=0,28,140,64 NonActiveWindowTitleTextColor=255,255,255 NonActiveWindowTitleBackGroundColor=24,33,87,64 InfoUpperRightTextColor=255,0,0 InfoUpperRightBackGroundColor=0,0,0,0 InfoLowerLeftTextColor=255,255,255 InfoLowerLeftBackGroundColor=255,0,0,128 InfoLowerRightTextColor=255,255,255 InfoLowerRightBackGroundColor=255,0,0,128 InfoBrakesEnable=True InfoParkingBrakesEnable=True InfoPauseEnable=True InfoSlewEnable=True InfoStallEnable=True InfoOverspeedEnable=True BLOOM_EFFECTS=0 SKINNED_ANIMATIONS=1 TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40 UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30 WideViewAspect=True [Main] User Objects=Airplane, Helicopter SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Rotorcraft SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehicles SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\Boats SimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\Animals SimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\Misc SimObjectPaths.6=MyTraffic\Aircraft Maximized=1 Location=0,0,1920,1080,\\.\DISPLAY1 HideMenuNormal=0 HideMenuFullscreen=1 ProcSpeed=14829 PerfBucket=7 FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.1 [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670.0] Mode=1920x1080x32 Anisotropic=1 [GRAPHICS] SHADER_CACHE_PRIMED=1693458432 TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 NUM_LIGHTS=8 AIRCRAFT_SHADOWS=1 HIGHMEMFIX=1 AIRCRAFT_REFLECTIONS=1 COCKPIT_HIGH_LOD=1 LANDING_LIGHTS=1 AC_SELF_SHADOW=0 EFFECTS_QUALITY=2 GROUND_SHADOWS=0 TEXTURE_QUALITY=3 IMAGE_QUALITY=0 See_Self=1 Text_Scroll=0 SHADER_CACHE_PRIMED_10=1693458432 D3D10=0 Thanks
  4. Thanks Both. So say I use FS Build, how do I know which SID and STAR to select in the flight planning process? Here is what I would do: Say I plan a flight from Bristol (EGGD) to Paris CDG (LFPG)... In FS Build, I would choose EGGD and whatever is the active runway. Then choose a SID which correlates to the general direction of flight, yes? How do I then know in advance which runway and STAR to select for the approach to LFPG? Or would you wait and select the STAR in the FMC once the active runway at LFPG is established (via the ATIS??) Sorry this probably sounds really dumb...but flight planning is not something I've ever really considered. But now that I am flying more advanced add ons, I'd like to fly more like real pilots would, i.e. loading a flight plan into an FMC and having the FMC largely flying the route. Thanks Martin
  5. Hello all I've recently upgraded to FSX, and in FS9 my flight planning was non existent. All I did was enter a start and end airport in FS9, and use the default ATC to guide me through a flight, culminating in an ILS approach into my airport. Now that I have FSX and am upgrading to more serious payware aircraft etc, I would like to learn more about more "serious" flight planning. I have purchased FSBuild, however the whole flight planning process just confuses me! All I want to do is choose a route, depart the airport via a SID, and do an ILS landing at the destination airport via a STAR. I am familiar with operating an FMC of a 737/757 from my FS9 days, and have a vague knowledge of the purpose of SIDS and STARS. If anyone can talk me through their flight planning "routine" or share tips/resources then I'd be very grateful. PS - I don't mind whether or not I use the ATC at this point in time. Regards Martin
  6. OK, so after a bit more testing, I'm getting CTD's in FSX at 4.4Ghz - 1.33Vcore, despite having been fine during Prime95 tests. I'm guessing I've done something wrong. If anyone can offer any advice I'd be very grateful. Martin
  7. Hasse I think the temps reached 73 during prime95 at 1.33. The case is well ventilated and cooler good. My computer is probably used about 20 hrs per week, certainly never 24/7 Will try up to 1.38 and see if I can get it stable at 4.5 Should I be playing with the other voltages, pll and vtt? Martin Also curious as to how the ram frequency affects things. I have 2000 MHz ram but had to enable xmp in the bios to use that frequency. When I do, I get blue screen on boot so had to drop it to 1800mhz
  8. Hi All OK so I've just built a new system and am attempting overclocking for the first time (eek!) I've read a few guides, so I think I understand the basic principles, but would appreciate some guidance from those more knowledgable than myself. I have a 3570K on a Gigabyte Z77 MOBO. OK, so I started by upping the multiplier to 42 and leaving the Vcore untouched. This booted fine and handled the Prime95 test fine, no BSODs or anything. I then upped to 43 and had to increase the Vcore to be able to avoid BSODs in Prime 95. Same again going up to 44. At 44x I had to increase the Vcore to 1.33 to get it to avoid crashing in Prime95. I think this is a little on the high side for the voltage isn't it? I wanted to go up to 45x but even at 1.36 Vcore it wasn't stable under Prime95. So,. questions... 1) Am I ok to leave it at 1.33Vcore or is this too high? I don't want to have to go down below 4.4 if I can avoid it. I haven't changed either the VTT or PLL voltages. 2) Any tips for getting it higher and stable? Or should I not be aiming any higher at all? Appreciate any help Martin
  9. Hi Jordan I went with the EVGA GTX670 FTW Signature II in the end! My system got built last night so today is being spend installing, configuring and overclocking! :-)
  10. A question - how long should you run a stress test for at a particular multiplier before you can be happy that it is stable and temps are as high as they are going to get?
  11. If I did get an SSD further down the road I presume there's no easy way to transfer FSX to it? It would be a full reinstall onto the SSD?
  12. Ha ha, I actually thought about an SSD but I had to draw the line with something and that's where it came down! I already went about 20-25% over budget and just blew another £100 on desk and chair to make myself at home tweaking and installing add ons  Will get some pics of the new setup up once it's all sorted out. I feel like a kid at Christmas, not going to be sleeping much tonight!
  13. Robert Yes, I set aside a separate budget for some addons. I'm going to get Ultimate Terrain X Europe and Ground Environment X Europe (I mostly fly short haul European routes so seems like a sensible place to start). I also have FSGlobal mesh which I purchased for FS2004 but also has FSX version on the same DVD so that's good that I don't have to repurchase this product again. I also have all of the UK2000 Extreme airports for FS9 and don't have to pay again to get these for FSX which is good. I will also probably be getting the iFly 737 as I had this for FS9. I was thinking about the PMDG NGX but I am already familiar with the iFly and also includes the 600/700 variants without extra cost so think I will be going for the iFly again. Is there anything else you'd recommend? I'm all about the eye-candy, so if there are any other products to look at which will increase the visual experience I'm all ears. I was thinking about getting the Horizon photoreal scenery for the UK but I'm a bit reluctant to spend around ~£50 on this at the moment as I don't have much experience of photo scenery. I love how it looks from altitude but not sure about how flat everything would look on approach.
  14. Thanks Ben, I certainly hope so for £1200! You've been a great deal of help in helping me put together my shopping list, so thank you. My friend is putting the system together for me tomorrow evening and then hopefully he'll be on hand to help me overclock it as well as he is a lot more knowledgeable about this than I am! I wasn't planning on de-lidding the CPU, it's not something I feel comfortable doing. I've deliberately chosen a case that seems to perform well with regards cooling, and spent more than I had planned on a CPU cooler in the hope that I can reach moderate OC levels without delidding. Ideally I'd like to get it up to 4.5. Do you think that's reasonable?
  15. Eek, hadn't even considered that to be honest, and either way it's irrelevant as I currently have wireless anyway! Fingers crossed, if not I think my parents may have a plug in one!
  16. Well that's it! After weeks of umming and ahhing, reading reviews, etc, I've finally pressed the order button, and will have all my parts tomorrow! Here is what I've ordered: Intel i5 3570K Gigabyte GA-Z77X-DH3 Motherboard 8GB Corsair XMS3 2000Mhz RAM - had to compromise here to accommodate the.. ...Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler (was going to get Corsair Vengeance but the large heat spreaders will get in the way of the cooler) 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black HDD 2GB EVGA GTX670 FTW Signature II GPU Sony DVD-RW Drive Corsair TX750 PSU Corsair Carbide 300R Case 22" Iiyama E2278HD Monitor Logitech MK 260 Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Logitech X140 Speakers Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit EXCITED!
  17. Yes, it's not a deal breaker for the budget, just trying to weigh up cost/benefit as usual!
  18. Thanks Craig. I'm now torn between the 670 and the MSI 660Ti Power Edition. Reviews suggest the MSI 660Ti isn't far off of the 670 performance and it's about 20% less...hmmm!
  19. Hi All I'm just about done with my new build for FSX and am stuck on the GPU. I was originally set on the GTX660Ti OC and then noticed the GTX670 is not actually a game-changing amount more money. Any suggestions from those who use either card. I know in theory the GTX670 is the faster card, but would be interested to hear opinions from those using either in FSX. Thanks Martin
  20. Thanks Ben. The MSI power edition OC GTX670 is about £50 more than the 660Ti OC. Happy to spend another £50, was just unsure about whether it would offer any significant performance gain?
  21. Also final question...is it worth spending a bit extra on the GTX670 over the 660Ti OC?
  22. Thanks, think I'm all but done with my shopping list now! The one area I don't know about is the CPU cooler. I want to OC without delidding so I want to make sure I have the best cooler I can afford for this. Happy to spend up to £70 or so on the cooler. Any tips? Cheers! ...leaning towards the Noctua NH-D14. Does this justify being twice the price of the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo?
  23. Ben That RAM seems really hard to come by in the UK without paying silly money compared to the US price. How does this stack up against it and against what I suggested in my "final" shopping list? Thanks http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-(2x4gb)-corsair-ddr3-vengeance-jet-black-pc3-19200-(2400)-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-10-12-12-31-xmp
