I'm trying to create an "airport" on a lake using ADE9x but I'm running into problems. I do not know a great deal about the processes behind the scenes and I have foundered.
Specifically, this is to be an ice runway on Lake Missisa in N.W.T. (as per Ice Pilots S1E10) for a C-46 to land on.
I began by trying the steps in 15.2.2 of the manual. It actually seemed to work except for two things. First , the Exclude General Background does not restrict itself to the area of the polygon, but instead affects an entire tile. Consequently, at the edge of the "ice" I have an expanse of woodland instead of open water. Attempts to overlay a hydro texture over this (now) landclass region have failed.
Second, though I actually put an aircraft on the lake in Slew mode and read off the elevation, when I use that elevation for the airport I amost always get the airport floating several feet above the surrounding landclass. Again reading the elevations, it appears that the airport is at 598.9 feet when I set it for 590 feet within ADE9x.
That mismatch problem also frequently occurs when I skip al the steps of 15.2.2 except for adding a landclass polygon (ice), then building the airport on top of that. This method, other than the elevation mismatch, seems to give the better results, EXCEPT that when I load to the airport I always begin with an FSX CRASH event. Once the sim resets I find myself sitting on the end of the runway.
Beyond this, I've lost the plot. I keep trying something that seems like it might be a logical "fix", but something else breaks. I had an almost working setup, then added a parking bay on the ice apron, and now FSX CTDs every time I try to load that version of the airport.
Does anyone have solid suggestions? Is there a better explanation than the manual for how to use these features? It really doesn't explain what's going on so I need a source of deeper information.
