  1. akmatov's post in How can I regain ATC voices - FSXSE? was marked as the answer
After posting, I couldn't sleep so I poked at this some more and found the problem.  Settings\Sound on my setup was at the default for 'default primary device' as I had never messed with sound other than the one time to change voice volume that started the problem.  Idly poking at things I selected that actual sound system I had and POOF everything worked as they should.  Seems strange to me, but a lesson learned.
  2. akmatov's post in HELP Can't reinstall FSX:SE was marked as the answer
thx for all the good info.  actually while waiting I continued my long trek through google and found that often times the problem for FSX deciding to no longer start is the logbook.bin file getting corrupted.  Since I hadn't deleted it prior to my attempts to fix the problem with a reinstall, the reinstall failed to solve the problem.  I deleted this file and FSX started right up.
