  1. This thread is the only way I have found to air the topic, please someone advise on how to put it somewhere else if necessary. I have a PC with 3 identical Acer S240 displays running with Windows 10 and FSX. Two of these displays work fine. The other one turns on 30℅ of the time but more often refuses to light up. I see 4 possible root causes of the problem but want to diagnose properly before spending money. 1 it might be the monitor: faulty electrolitics etc? 2 connection - plugs, sockets, the cable itself. 3 The graphics card. 4 The Windows 10 OS &/or config. The question is can anyone suggest how I can determine what is wrong before I replace or renew something. Hope someone can help. Brian
  2. new forum question

  3. Thanks Jim I'll have a look there and report back anything of intetest. Brian
  4. Hi JimF, Thanks for your response. The "clouds" issue was the subject of my original post. I thought there might be an obvious, simple solution that I was missing but that's clearly not so. And I'm quite happy to live with things as they are - I can still fly the 300CBi on my PC and rehearse flights when required before going to Beccles to fly the real thing. As I said in my last post I contacted Just Flight in case they know the answer. Along with my question to them were some other (more) important issues. To summarise: MAP never goes higher than 21" RPM always at top end of green sector When playing a FS Recorder saved recording, from Spot View, clouds in the distance appear between me and recorded 300CBi's rotors instead of beyond the 300CBi. Also I pointed out to Just Flight that having taken their advice to unininstall and reinstall the JF 300CBi before running their service pack I am now unable to reinstall the 300CBi on my Windows 10 notebook. Just Flight's response, which I posted, explains why I can't reinstall from their DVD but it doesn't address tha MAP or RPM issues. Thank heavens the 300CBi still works on the Windows 10 PC. I use it most days. At the moment I'm touring all the WW2 airfields in East Angla, even those not included in FSX's airfields. Brian
  5. I took your advice and contacted the supplier, Just Flight, with this " ... Title: Flying Club Schweizer 300CBi System specs: Operating System: Windows 10 Home Flight Sim: Flight Simulator X (SP2) Format: Boxed (Purchased from JF) Comments: Some problems on FSX flying the 300CBi: MAP never goes higher than 21" RPM always at top end of green sector When playing a FS Recorder saved recording, from Spot View, clouds in the distance appear between me and recorded 300CBi's rotors instead of beyond the 300CBi. Hoping to solve things I have installed FSX SP2 and Just Flight's 300CBi update, having first uninstalled and then reinstalled the 300CBi from the DVD that I bought. At this stage I found that the 300CBi software had not been reinstalled from the DVD and I can't find any reference to the 300CBi on FSX, Windows File Explorer or Windows|All Applications. I do not seem able to reinstall the DVD version of the (lovely) 300CBi." Very quickly they replied as follows " ... Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have decided to block certain types of DRM in Windows 10 This has caused a large number of older games to stop working and blocked the use of certain types of protected disks None of our disk product will install in Windows 10 Many people who upgraded for free have already rolled back to their previous Windows because of this and other problems. Those who have a new machine with Windows 10 already installed don't have this option You should complain to Microsoft. If enough people do then maybe they will change their mind about this issue. You should also note that some people are finding FSX itself has strange problems in Windows 10. it seems it may not be fully compatible on some systems. There is a possible workaround that will allow safedisc disks to work on some Windows 10 systems. For it to work you must have a system that doesn't have SecureBoot enabled or that will let you disable the SecureBoot feature in the BIOS The zip below contains tools and instructions for setting up your system temporarily to allow Safedisc discs to be successfully validated. Although it describes the actions for a particular product (VFR Photoscenery) the same method applies to any safedisc disk Download This is definitely "at your own risk" and should only be tried if you are comfortable working with the commandline interface on your system." I thought I'd let you know before I try anything else. Just to say at this point I'm not devastated. I've got FSX and the 300CBi on the PC that I fly on and was just trying things out on the (very capable) notebook. So I can still practise real flights before going to the airfield. But it would nice to sort out the problems. I'll see if Microsoft can help and let you know what happens. If you have any ideas please tell me. Brian
  6. Still no solution but decided to follow your advice and sent Just Flight the following "... 7. Back in action. I looked at jandjfrench's approach. Went through Just Flight's advice on upgrading the 300CBi, inc uninstalling all the 300CBi software and then reinstalling from the original DVD. Downloaded their upgrade and saved it. Tried to reinstall the DVD 300CBi but the process dindn't complete and I never got the Finish option. After looking for signs of the reinstalled 300CBi there were none in FSX, Wndows File Explorer or in Windows 10 Start-All Apps. So I've lost the 300CBi. I've put all this into Just Flight's support and I'm hoping for the best. In the meantime and just in case, does anyone in the forum have any ideas? Brian
  8. Just a quick word. I'm not losing interest and thanks for all the responses. I won't be able to attempt a solution until after Thurs 18/8. I'll be able to continue with this on Frid 19th and will report anything of interest. Brian
  9. Right, I'll be looking there and report back. Thanks jandjfrench for the guidance. And thanks Jim for your last post that I was intending to follow up when I get back to the sim. Brian
  10. The weather selected in FSX is default. I tried a flight using a default FSX aircraft and the clouds stay well behind the aircraft, where they are during the flight that was recorderd. So from Jim's last post it would appear that the problem is with the addon, Just Flight's Schweizer 300CBi. So it looks as though I'll have to turn to them as Jim suggested. Just a thought though, couldn't I just put "propellors" at the top of the list in the FSX Scenery Library? Wouldn't that place the 300CBi's rotors in front of all clouds in any view?
  11. Thanks Jim. Glad things seem clearer now. Yes, my third sentence didn't have a question mark, it was really a statement as I think you guessed. Looking back I could have phrased the post more succinctly and saved you lot some trouble. Sorry. I did wonder if the solution might be to rearrange priorities in FSX Settings but when I couldn't find clouds or 300CBi in the list I thought best seek advice. I did wonder whether lifting the "propeller" stuff to the top might do the job but not being an expert I didn't dare. I've got another (expensive) flight in just over a week and I don't want to mess up FSX at this stage when I would rather continue practising on the sim despite the odd awkward cloud. I'll look into your idea about how widespread this is with other aircraft. The clouds in question are FSX defaults rather than add ons. Thanks again. Brian
  12. Blimey, what a turn out. First thanks to all who replied. No my post wasn't a wind up. Second, I can't have described the problem clearly enough so let me try again. I'm training in a Schweizer 300CBi. I use FSX to practice between real flights with Just Flight's 300CBi sim (which, by the way, is very good). I usually record each sim flight so that I can replay what happened and see signs of improvement or areas where further work is needed. My replays are generally done from an outside-the-cockpit view directly behind the 300CBi that I flew - this is what I referred to as the spotplane. While I'm watching a replay I will be about 25m behind the helicopter. If I raise my vewing position in "the spotplane" well above the helicopter I will see lots of fair weather Cu far off in the distance, maybe 2km away. If I then lower the "spotplane" view level with the CBi I'm watching (which is where I normally watch from), the clouds that were 2km away now appear between me in the "spotplane" and the 300CBi. Hope that helps. Brian
  13. I love clouds. I've used them in real life, or rather the thermals that make them, to keep my glider up. And on FSX don't they look just like the real thing. But, my clouds get between the spot plane and the helicopter I'm flying. That's a serious nuisance when I'm reviewing a recorded flight and keep losing sight of the heli because one of FSX's lovely cumulus has wandered between me in the spotplane and the heli I'm trying to watch. Shouldn't the clouds stay behind the helicopter? How can I put things right?
  14. Thanks John. The installation runs out of time tomorrow so I've just got time to look at your suggestions, with fingers crossed. It's also been offered on another forum that I uninstal what I've got and instal (very carefully) another one. I might have time to do that as well. If that doesn't work then I'm afraid I'll be glad to see the back of the programme; it offers fantastic facilities for the price but that's no good if it doesn't work.
  15. I've been troubled greatly by this for several days and you've provided the answer. When I read your reply my first thought was "why didn't I think of that?" Instead I'd been puzzling over how it could possibly happen because altimeters aren't ever calibrated by the user, they're just set to a pressure. So I couldn't imagine how some sort of adjustment could be possible but of course you were right; I'd changed settings to metric hoping that would give me mB on the forecast instead of ins Hg. Never thought what else it would do until I got your response. I went back into settings and now the altimeter's working fine. Many thanks. The helicopter isn'nt mine I just fly it when I can afford the owners fee. But I do have a copy of the flight manual for it, a Hughes 269C-1. The manual was last approved by Gaetano Sciortino, Manager, NYACO, ANE-170, on 19 Nov 2014. But revisions of the manual started Nov 1995 and revision 10 (23 Jul 1999) incorporated a new alternate instrument panel that might have had an altimeter that you had dealings with. Anyway, nice to know that the lovely machine I fly now and then may have a link with someone who was kind enough to make. ontact via AVSIM. All the best.
