  1. Hello everyone,

I've been asking around on VATSIM about what people would think of an (unofficial) 123.45 frequency. Would anyone be interested if I set up a 123.45 discord server for general pilot conversation? Discord is a completely free voice chat service used predominantly by gamers. However, I think it would work fine for this cause. Click on the link below to join.

    Hi

I have a couple of Fly Tampa Airports including Athens and Corfu which I really like. I am thinking about getting Schiphol (EHAM) but am a bit worried about performance as it's such a big airport.  Do any of you guys have experience using this airport with FSX

    kind regards

    Daz

Hi Daz. It really depends on your specs. Personally, I have never had issues with addon airports, but you may want to turn of the larger addon airports when not in use.

  3. Hi everyone. Thanks for all of the help in choosing a setup. I have one more question regarding the GPU. I have also consulted my friend (who is extemely PC-savvy), who said that using an RTX graphics card would not be worth the extra several hundred pounds, as only a handful of games support the ray-tracing that it offers. What is the advantage of a 20- card with P3D?

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s been reduced to rubble, it’s still standing and the photos taken on the inside don’t look as bad as I expected considering how bad it looked when it was on fire.

I would totally agree, and yet Emanuel Macron has (I think) said that it will be 40 years until it's fully restored...

Friday Harbor is your Default Flight.  The default aircraft is the ultralight.  You can make your Default Flight anything you want.  I have mine set up at and airport in my time zone using the default Baron58 in a cold and dark scenario.

My rule is that I never fly the default flight, but it allows any aircraft that I choose to be manually started and I can choose any airport.

P.S.  Friday Harbor is in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. Near Seattle, Washington.

I see why you’ve done that. Say that it’s 1722 where I am, FSX sets the time at Friday Harbour to 1722 local time. So, irritatingly, one has to set the time at the airport you wish to start at!

  6. If you see this error in a web browser: DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG, and cannot access any websites, try this solution. *Tested in Windows 10*

    1. Click on the Start button, and type "cmd" into the search box.

    2. Right click the first option, and click "Run as administrator".

    3. Once Command Prompt opens, type in the following codes into the prompt, hitting enter after each:

                                  netsh int ip reset

                                  netsh winsock reset

                                  ipconfig /flushdns

                                  ipconfig /renew

    4. Now restart your computer, and your good to go.

Okay, here's my take on screen resolution and size. To try and remove the subjective element and make it purely objective sharpness depends on two things; how many pixels per inch and how far away your eyes are from the screen.

Let's take an extreme example. Remember back when we had portable CRT TVs and how much sharper a 14" looked compared to your massive 21" CRT in the lounge? 😁 That's because the smaller screen (but still the same number of lines) had more info packed into a smaller space.

Now let's look at FullHD, 2K (or QHD to give it its proper name) and UHD/4K. Load this calculator and enter your desired resolution and screen size. It will calculate the number of pixels per inch. Entirely objective.

    https://www.calculatorsoup.com/calculators/technology/ppi-calculator.php

A 28" FullHD display results in 79ppi. Increase that to QHD (2560*1440) and it increases to 105ppi. That's just 33% more. You will only see a small improvement.

If you go to a 32" QHD it actually decreases to 92ppi. A FullHD 32" gives just 69ppi. Ouch!

    But if you go UHD/4K a 32" gives you a massive 138ppi. A 43" gives 102ppi and a 50" gives just 88ppi, hardly any better than a 28" FullHD display.

Size and resolution is all about getting a balance. If you want immersion go for the biggest display you can afford but you will lose the sharpness a smaller display gives.

Some say the sweet spot for UHD/4K is 32" but others want the immersion of a larger display. Only the user can decide.

Obviously all this depends on the graohics card. The 2070 is borderline for UHD/4K so I would suggest a QHD display is a good compromise. Use the calculator to work out what is best for you.

    I recon I'll go for a 28" 1080p ultrawide, or a 2K for normal aspect ratios.

  8. Yes. I would agree to some extent, but each resolution has its optimal screen size - the point at which there are about 60 pixels/inch (don't mark my word on that). If you have too high a resolution on too small of a screen, you have essentially wasted your money because the difference between the two are virtually unnoticeable. Also (in case you haven't noticed) I play FS on a gaming laptop. Before I bought my first monitor, I suffered a problem derived from too many pixels on too small of a screen, which is some text appears blurry. This is how control panel looks on my laptop screen: https://ibb.co/vzYpBR7, and this is how it looks on my monitor: https://ibb.co/JdMcnkz.

I wish people would read the attached notes at https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/553082-p3d-v4-recommended-pc-specs/?page=2&tab=comments#comment-3995572 I specifically say that if you have the budget you should go entirely SSD. I also say you should go up from a RTX2060 to an RTX2070 if you can afford it.

Just remember though there isn't a bottomless pile of cash, it's £1100 as on the attached spec. You upgrade to an RTX2070 (+£120), a 1TB SSD (+£55) and a water cooler (£+28 or more) and suddenly it's £1330. And the water cooler and SSD aren't going to improve framerates much.

I agree with Ray. Except that I don't want my new PC to catch fire, then destroy itself and my house. Also, although an SSD won't improve frames in-game, it will improve loading times etc, which contributes to a much smoother, more enjoyable flight simming session. I think I probably would add on an RTX2070, a 1TB SSD, and water cooling, as the extra £200 is really worth what you're adding, and on the grand scheme of things, its not that much (compared to everything else). Also, the recommended requirements for p3d do say 8GB graphics card.
