  1. OK, ok, I think I'm starting to understand. There's "updates", software updates, they get an update number, 1 through 6 so far.

    (1.10.11.0) Update #6, Nov 10 Tuesday
(1.10.7.0) Update #5, Oct 29 Thursday (delay mentioned)
    (1.9.5.0) Update #4, Oct 13 Tuesday
(1.9.3.0) Update #3 "World Update 1: Japan", Sept 29 Tuesday
    (1.8.3.0) Update #2, Sept 16 Wednesday
    (1.7.14.0) Update #1, Sept 02 Wednesday

Then there's "updates", information updates on ongoing work, they get a date, the last one being Nov 12th.

    https://www.flightsimulator.com/

I guess I can stop constantly checking until the 24th!

  2. OK, it's now 6 days since Nov 12th and I haven't gotten any updates since Patch 6/Nov 5th update, which became available to me around Nov 10th.

I'm completely confused about the Nov 12th update? Did that come out, but it's still listed as 1.10.11.0 and I haven't noticed any differences? Will the Nov 12th update actually come out before the expected Nov 24th update is announced? Why give an update a date when the update isn't available until some undefined time after that?

Anyone compiling a list of each patch by sequential number, date and the actual date it becomes available and the actual software versions?

  3. Yeah, I understand the challenges and photogrammetry in general is a great addition and better than auto gen mostly. But bridges and port cranes are where it really falls apart the most. I know it's generally verboten in GA to be doing crazy things like flying under a bridge. But in the sims I love to do some bridge barnstorming! And MSFS is the first sim I can recall using that mostly doesn't allow you to fly under bridges. Maybe you can some places, I can only recall crashing when trying, even on very tall bridges with TONS of space underneath.

  4. I've backed up and replaced the big caches directory, the 90-100gb one. If you aren't suspicious of the data being the cause of whatever reason you are reinstalling you should be good there to save the time and bandwidth of downloading that whole mess again. But I've only installed from Steam or Xbox. They always reinstall with the latest version. If you are installing from the DVDs it's going to be installing from the original release version I assume. The first few versions where install nightmares. So if there's someway to start your install from the latest release you may have better results. Or I'm just confused and the DVD version goes and gets the latest version initially when it is installed?

  5. Looks great! Should pair nicely with the FSimStudios YVR with Vancouver city add ons like the seaplane docks.

I like the detailed port cranes, I sure would like to see better port cranes world wide. They are part of the skyline in so many port cities of the world, let look like garbage in the base photogrammetry. Bridges could see improvement in MSFS as many, even in big cities have vertical walls of water underneath, etc. And you generally can't fly under them?! Even when it looks right, the bridges I've tried to fly under just make me crash into an invisible wall instead of passing underneath.

Heck! Will someone get a flyable Beaver published for MSFS already! 🙂 The Icon looks like an awesome plane to own and fly in the real world. But it's too boring for a sim plane. I want the classic Beaver float!

  6. I think it varies depending on how much and what kind of community content you are using.

I just have one FSDT airport (CYVR) and I've dabbled in a few free sceneries like Yosemite. I've just done a cut/paste of the contents of my Community directory to a backup directory. I do my MSFS updates, then move the files back. Since they are not moving to a different drive and are not being compressed or processed in any way the move from/to the Community directory is rather instant. Granted I don't have much data in there, but if you did, it would still be rather instant. Then I run the FSDT Live Update to make sure I have the latest. But various ways to slice this. And I've had updates where I left everything as is and just updated without trouble. If you have tons of varied community content more complex habits certainly may be warranted. Your mileage may vary, etc., etc.

  7. I have both Steam and Gamepass/Xbox versions installed and they both work and I have seen no conflicts. One is installed on drive E:, the other on drive F:, but the paths are entirely different, so I believe they would both live on the C drive just fine? I was careful to make sure the packages and rolling cache directories were distinct and not shared between the versions. Microsoft new style app installs go into a restricted directory and there's no easy way to see or modify, or link to the contents of the install directory. The Steam version uses a more traditional Windows install and it goes in the Program Files directory, if in the shared Steam sub directory.

  8. I tried a few minutes ago after a fresh reboot and I'm still on 1.10.11.0.

Why is it thought patch 7 will be available today (Tuesday the 17th)? I was thinking it should be around now just because the Nov 5th patch (#6) was available for download around the 10th? So was thinking the Nov 12th update should be around the 17th, but that's just guessing on my part? Was there more concrete information on download availability?

I am SUPER eager to see if the FPS improvements mentioned in the roadmap video are in this next patch? Or the end of the month patch that will come with the US/North American content improvements?

  9. Sure, a $50, 6 years old card isn't going to assure you long term support. But it's going to be a cheap, but non trivial upgrade from a Kepler or first gen Maxwell CPU.

But agreed, Asobo does need to handle this better. They need to be transparent about future support of older hardware and give people options if future versions drop support for previously supported hardware.

The upcoming issue is Direct X 12. MSFS is supposed to go to that sometime next year as I recall? As far as Nvidia goes, only the 900 series and up support DX12 other than a few 700 and 800 series GPUs that are actually using silicon from the newer generation Maxwell 2 tech, just marketed lower end and I'm not sure they support all typical DX 12 features while still using the DX 12 apis . So at that point I don't see older cards working at all unless they have the ability to run DX 11 or 12 both depending on hardware and settings?

  10. Pretty sad they are making things worse for people with lower spec/older hardware. If they are going to move up the minimum specs, they need to allow people to lock off on a supported version of the sim, but as far as I know, the the updates aren't optional, they will keep trying to install. Not sure what'd happen if you refused all updates for months or years. Beside being really tired of refusing them every time you open the software.

That said? if you could afford to buy this sim, you can probably afford to buy a 900 series nvidia card. They are selling used for less than the base price of MSFS! 970s can probably be had for $50? I can't  even imagine trying to run this software on a video card as old as Kepler/Maxwell.

  11. Yeah, I've spent many an hour optimizing and getting my overclocks good, but stable. I do know those links. Also, JayzTwoCents has some good advice too. Thankfully, with the 3080 I don't have to mess with in sim settings nearly as much. With the 2080 I was always adjusting depending on being in urban or rural scenery.  Just holding my breath for the next few updates in hopes of some more fps as I feel I've exhausted all other out of application settings and hardware upgrades I can afford at the moment.

  12. There was a FPS boosting CPU optimization mentioned as on the way? Is that going to be in the Nov 12th update (Patch 7? I'm loosing track)? Or the end of the month update with the US updates?

It's generally 4 or 5 days after a patch before it's available? The Nov 12th patch should be here tomorrow or soon? Wasn't the Nov 5th update available on the 10th?

I just got my 3080 finally and it's amazing, but still on my ancient CPU and don't have the budget to upgrade the CPU/mobo right now, so a nice boost in CPU efficiency/fps would be very, very welcome. It's really only down low, roof top level in dense urban areas where I get really bogged down (under 30, sometime teens) due to CPU limits. Generally I'm high 30s or into the 40s and happy with that for 4k, gorgeous settings.

  13. Good to hear this, Brandon.

I'm about to try this. Bought the Steam version, Premium Deluxe. Crashes aplenty on the release version, but generally it worked and I enjoyed it. Uninstalled to do a fresh 1.7.14.0 install and it would never reinstall, just hang at the blue bar every single time.

So, figured I'd do the $1 first month on Gamepass and try the MS version, but it's only the Standard version. Worked like a charm and I'm flying 1.9.3 beautifully. So now I want to see if the Steam issue has been fixed in newer versions, and get my deluxe content back. (especially AFO and the Pipistrel!) But I don't want to uninstall the MS version in case neither version will reinstall?! So I'll try adding the steam version installed on another SSD and pray it will install again?

    Wish me luck.

  14. Good luck with that, Ambivrt. My understanding is you can't get a refund from Steam after 2 hours of gameplay. But the large majority of now 23 hours of "play" racked up on the Steam version is from hours and hours of constantly trying and failing to get it to run. It is infuriating. I've never had any problems with a Steam game/app in about 10 years or more of use, but this one is a disaster. And a $120 USD disaster. $160 Canadian. I suspect this will all get worked out eventually, but it may not be soon. Praying the patch 2 fixes it, but given patch 1 was where I first ran into issues, I have my doubts.

  15. Well folks. I signed up for the Game Pass $1 first month. Installed FS2020 (the first 1gb) and on the first try to "play it" it just gave an error about "bad game data, unable to proceed". I waited a day and tried it last night and it started right up and took me to the big (90gb) download. That took about an hour and it completed then hung. I restarted and it worked, was able to take a flight. Which is fantastic, even if I don't have the deluxe/premium content I paid for on Steam. And it has crashed about 8 times in 4 hours, mostly when changing settings, especially anything related to the rolling cache. But it has not crashed when flying like I had in the Steam version when it still worked pre 1.7.14.0.

SO.... If you have given up getting the Steam version working, it may be worth trying the XBox version. I'll try the Steam version again after patch 2 is out.

  16. I sure hope there's some unmentioned work on reliability and installation/start up issues! I guess we'll see around the 20th.

I know you are reluctant to format and fresh install as I suggested in a much earlier post in this thread, but you have been battling this thing for several days. My guess is that you have some bunged Windows registry issues at the very least. If you factor in the time you are spending on trouble shooting and the immense frustration that goes with it, and will continue to go through, you are really better off considering the option. As I stated, Windows takes 10 minutes to install. Then you need to install your copy of Microsoft Office maybe? Another 15 minutes, and another 10 to set up your email. 10 minutes here and there to install apps like Adobe Reader, maybe Photoshop... sometimes it just does not make sense in time and hassle. The rest you can install as and when you need it.

If you do decide to go this route, just make sure you back up all your files, including your email data file. I see you have several drives so that will be easy. Do not install another antivirus, Windows Defender is perfectly adequate. Do not install stuff like CCleaner and Malwarebytes. Keep your pc free of junk, it will be faster and more stable.

if you are unsure how, there are excellent step by step tutorials here: https://www.tenforums.com

Either way you play it, good luck.

Window 10 install in 10 minutes?! I have not found that to be the case. 🙂 Maybe once I get a new mobo with NVMe. I actually have no plans to reinstall Windows until then and that could be a year from now or more, this old workhorse X79 system has held up amazingly well for it's age. A rtx 3080 may eat up my hardware budget for the next year!  And I have a LOT more than just Office and Adobe Reader. The time of the OS install is minor compared to re-installing everything else on the PC. I probably have about 10 or 12 imaging applications from Photoshop, to Capture One, Video apps DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro,  I have various 3D apps like Maya, Houdini, Unreal. I have a large slew of other games, benchmarks, wide variety of utilities. Not to mention DCS, Prepar3d, X Plane. And other than Fight Sim 2020, everything works great. This has been a solid install of Windows for some time and I've spent ages getting everything installed and everything set up as I like it. Third time I'm saying it in this thread, I will NOT be reinstalling Windows for one just released app that's only had it's first patch when dozens and dozens of other apps, many related to my profession and livelihood, are working beautifully. I'm working 60+ hour weeks for at least another month, I need this PC working as is for the foreseeable future.

I spent my one day off this week trying everything under the sun to get FS2020 working again and other than a few tries here and there, I'm done spending time on this until the next patch/update is out. But at some point I will try the Game Pass trial and see if that version of FS2020 has any better luck installing and starting. And I plan on taking some time soon to properly document my case at FS zendesk.

I appreciate these suggestions come from trying to help and I do agree a fresh install is likely to fix whatever glitch is causing FS freezing. But there's no assurance of that, could be the current drivers for my hardware are problematic with this build of FS. And even if I knew for absolute certain it would make FS run perfectly I simply can not reinstall the OS for at least a month when I'd have time to reinstall my vast trove of apps and get everything else in place in a non stressful pace. And I'm not inclined to spend any future time off reinstalling a whole C drive. Now, buying a new SSD and installing a fresh, separate Win 10 install to boot from alternately is a tempting test, possible temporary way to fly on my limited days off, leaving my current OS install and SSD as is.

But I encourage any and all suggestions OTHER than an OS reinstall.  🙂  Keep 'em coming if you got em. Maybe this thread will make a generally helpful compilation of things to try for people who are freezing during the blue bar after a new install or reinstall.

You are not alone sir, as I am going through the almost exact same grief as you.

    [Snip]

I hope you figure it out, and if you do please let me know. I'll try it again in a few days when I can tolerate the frustration.

Misery loves company, helps to hear I'm not the only one with deep frustrations. But sorry to hear of your troubles. I'll certainly keep this thread updated with my future successes and/or failures. I'll keep messing with it a bit, but mostly have lost all hope until the next patch, version release. The only thing I plan on trying in the near term is getting an xbox game pass trial and see if I'm just having a Steam version issue or something more fundemental to FS2020 itself.
