  1. NOVEMBER 24TH, 2022 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team Screenshot by EPPRglider81 (Forum) To all our virtual aviators in the United States, we here at Microsoft Flight Simulator wish you a very happy Thanksgiving! As many members of our team are US-based and are currently visiting family for the holiday long weekend, this week’s Development Update Blog will be abbreviated. We’ll be back with a full blog post again next week. We continue to carefully monitor your feedback to the 40th Anniversary Edition and Sim Update 11. We have an ongoing public beta test to directly address some of your comments and concerns, and we recently released a new beta build (1.29.30.0) with several bug fixes and improvements, mostly for the Airbus A310. Last Friday, we were delighted to host Jorg and Seb live on our Twitch channel to answer questions from the community and talk about the 2023 Roadmap for upcoming releases. If you missed the livestream, you can watch the archived video on YouTube here, or check out the written transcription here. Finally, earlier this week we experienced an issue that prevented players from completing new installations of Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC. This issue is now resolved, and installations are once again functioning normally. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience as our support teams worked to get a fix in place. MSFS Team DEVELOPMENT ROADMAP Click here for the web-friendly version. COMMUNITY FLY-IN There are a few locations around the world that are must-visit locations on every avgeek’s bucket list: Oshkosh, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Kitty Hawk…and a tiny Dutch island in the Caribbean. Sint Maarten’s Maho Beach is famously located directly adjacent to Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM), and the area is renowned among fans of aviation for being one of the best spots on the entire planet to watch landing jetliners as they pass less than 100 feet (30m) above the beach. Due to Maho’s popularity with plane spotters, most restaurants and bars at the beach display the arrival information of incoming flights. This week’s fly-in will see our group complete a full-stop landing at Princess Juliana (recently updated in Microsoft Flight Simulator’s 40th Anniversary Edition) as we island hop across the eastern Caribbean. Our flight plan will also include a touch & go at Saba, home of the shortest commercial runway in the world! Event details here. All are welcome to participate! COMMUNITY VIDEO We always love showcasing “sim vs. reality” videos, and this one comes with a unique twist we don’t often see: the “reality” portion was filmed live from the flight deck of a real Airbus A320. Check out this beautiful side-by-side footage from YouTuber Capt A320 as he flies into Marseille, France in both real life and Microsoft Flight Simulator! There are two features that work differently now on SU_11: Localization process: New Localization Process Stricter control of the files present in a SimObject type AssetGroup: Documentation on this one will be made available today on DevSupport. General: We re-arranged the Devmode menu bar. We hope this new organization will make more sense. Because everything is now where it should be. We also removed the “external tools” notion from the DevMode. External tools should just be standalone tools that can be opened from the devmode if necessary, i.e. the console. (SU_12). On the following day, Wednesday, Nov. 23rd, you can join us for another SDK Q&A at 1830Z / 10:30am PT. COMMUNITY FLY-IN Among airline pilots, few approaches are more legendary than the (in)famous checkerboard approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Nicknamed the “Kai Tak Heart Attack” due to the precision it demanded of pilots to make turns as low as 150 feet AGL over one of the most densely-populated areas of the planet, landing at Kai Tak was a true test of an aviator’s experience and skill. Although the real-world Kai Tak has been closed since 1998, this fan-favorite airport has recently returned to Microsoft Flight Simulator as part of the 40th Anniversary Edition update. Join us for our Fly-In Friday this week as we tour the Guangdong/Canton region of China with stops in Macau SAR, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and finally a full-stop landing at Kai Tak. Event details here. All are welcome to participate! COMMUNITY VIDEO Contrary to popular knowledge, Charles Lindbergh was not the first pilot to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. That distinction goes to the UK’s John Alcock and Arthur Brown, who completed the feat in a Vickers Vimy in 1919. Lindbergh was; however, the first aviator to cross the Atlantic while flying solo. When Lindbergh landed in Paris on May 21, 1927, he instantly became a global celebrity. His aircraft, the Ryan NYP “Spirit of St. Louis” is preserved for future generations to admire in the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. It is also now available for virtual aviators to fly in the 40th Anniversary Edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator. One of the newly-released missions is a historic re-creation of Lindbergh’s famous flight. Last weekend, Twitch streamer intheblueyonder livestreamed the entire journey from New York to Paris in the Spirit of St. Louis. He completed the journey in just over 31 hours of real time flight without any pauses or breaks (the actual historic flight for Lindbergh took 33.5 hours). If you missed it live, you can watch the entire replay of intheblueyonder’s flight here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1650614424 SCREENSHOT CHALLENGE You can submit your screenshot via Twitter with #MSFSchallenge or the Weekly Forum Post! 3. OCTOBER 20TH, 2022 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team Screenshot by ukaka5656 (Twitter) The dev team remains hard at work preparing for the release of the upcoming 40th Anniversary Edition which is scheduled to launch on November 11. A part of this includes bringing fixes and improvements to the ongoing Sim Update 11 beta. As a direct result from player feedback from last week’s first public test build, we released a new beta build (1.29.25.0) of Sim Update 11 to testers earlier today. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the Sim Update 11 beta and reported issues on the forums. The information, feedback and bug reports are incredibly valuable and have already helped us identify and resolve some issues in Sim Update 11. You can read the full release notes for the new build here. MSFS Team DEVELOPMENT ROADMAP Click here for the web-friendly version. Thanks for your feedback, we are doing our best to address the most critical issues! We need your attention on two features that work differently now on SU_11. Localization process: New Localization Process Stricter control of the files present in a SimObject type AssetGroup: Documentation on this one will be made available today on DevSupport. General: Scenery Editor: We fixed the Asset selector that was closing immediately after opening. We fixed a crash that happened when using the same model for two vector placements. Visual Effects Editor: With ImGUI update, the nodegraph would display all kinds of metrics. We have removed them. Project Editor: Naming validation now also checks the name length. We cleaned and improved the flow of renaming an item. We no longer reset all creation fields when going “Back” between popups when creating a new package. Merged the two commands when renaming/creating an item that would replace an existing one (remove previous + add new commands). Cleaning a package no longer cleans current package regardless of given package name. We fixed a crash on closing the Project Editor. We fixed the fact that asset groups were not writing Config tag, and we added the config edition in the asset group inspector. Aircraft Editor: We added Helicopters parameters. We removed the unwanted sections from cfg on save (ie. we remove PISTON when changing engine type from piston to jet). Legacy fuel system is automatically displayed if there is a FUEL section and no FUEL_SYSTEM section => this prevents the user from losing data. We added “None” to icao_engine_type. SimConnect: On the NavData API, we added new fields to Ndb and Vor. WASM: We fixed a potential memory corruption issue due to storing a 64-bit value in a 32-bit slot of the linear memory. THIRD PARTY UPDATE As of 10/15, we have now approved 280 (+2) third parties into the in-sim marketplace and – so far 168 (+1) have released 1,508 products on PC (+11) and 1,218 on Xbox (+12). In total, 2,381 products (+32) have already been released in 3rd party stores and the in-sim marketplace. Beyond that, another 604 products (+3) from 3rd party developers are in production (313 announced, 291 unannounced). In total, over 2,985 3rd party products (+34) have either been released or are in development. Airports: 1,642 airports (+12) are either released or are in various stages of development. 1,411 airports (+9) have been released on the platform so far in various stores. 919 airports (+4) have been released in the in-sim marketplace. 116 airports (+0) beyond the released airports have been announced. 115 airports (+3) are not announced, but the dev let us know that an airport is in production. Aircraft: 459 aircraft (+5) are either released or are in various stages of development. 173 aircraft (+3) have been released on the platform so far in various stores. 121aircraft (+3) have been released in the in-sim PC marketplace. 92aircraft (+3) have been released in the in-sim Xbox marketplace. 176aircraft (+2) beyond the released aircraft have been announced. 110aircraft (+0) are not announced, but the dev let us know that an aircraft is in production. Scenery: 774 scenery packs (+16) are either released or are in various stages of development. 691 scenery packs (+20) have been released on the platform so far in various stores. 236 scenery packs (+3) have been released in the in-sim marketplace. 21 scenery packs (+0) beyond the released scenery have been announced. 62 scenery packs (-4) are not announced, but the dev let us know that scenery is in production. Mission Packs: 110 mission packs (+1) are either released or are in various stages of development. 106 mission packs (+0) have been released on the platform so far in various stores. 41 mission packs (+1) have been released in the in-sim marketplace. 0 mission packs (+0) beyond the released missions have been announced. 4 mission packs (+1) are not announced, but the dev let us know that they are in production. TWITCH UPDATE October 22 is recognized in Australia as “Wombat Day”, a day to celebrate conservation of these adorable marsupials and their natural habitat. Dating back to the first Wombat Day in 2005, the traditional way to celebrate is to eat chocolate (typically baked into a Wombat Cake or Wombat fudge) and wine gums, so be sure to prep appropriately! Accordingly, Community Fly-In Friday this week will take us back to the Land Down Under for a flight over the Australian Outback, culminating with our arrival at Uluru, one of Australia’s most distinctive natural landmarks. Event details here. All are welcome to participate! COMMUNITY VIDEO Scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson sparked a debate about realism in filmmaking (and specifically in Top Gun: Maverick) last week when he posted to Twitter saying that Maverick would not have survived ejecting from the Darkstar while flying at Mach 10.5. Over on YouTube, Scott Manley posted a video rebuttal to deGrasse Tyson, arguing that safe ejection at that speed could indeed be possible, using the simulation of the Darkstar in Microsoft Flight Simulator to help demonstrate his point. If you’re interested in learning more about the thermal and kinetic principles involved in an ejection at such a high speed, check out Scott’s video below! 8. Chaotic is not around to post this looks like, and David got his earlier post deleted, so I'm going to give it a try ... just keep in mind that I ain't no ChaoticBeauty :) https://www.flightsimulator.com/september-8th-2022-development-update/ The full release of Sim Update 10 is on its way, slated for next week! While we are pinpointing the exact day of release, our team is currently adding in our final changes and updates for SU10. Beta users can expect one final test build coming shortly. We have also been closely working with NVIDIA regarding our DX12 optimizations and we plan to release SU10 in conjunction with an NVIDIA driver update that will help one of the first issues our Beta users discovered (graphical glitches and artifacts). It’s been incredibly helpful to have so many community members test Beta builds with us, so thank you for everything. We are excited for this release and looking forward to what’s next World Update 11: Canada, and the 40th Anniversary Edition (Sim Update 11)! You will find an updated Development Roadmap below. We fixed some metadata and release notes that were not correctly copied when doing "Save As" on a project. We fixed the thumbnail that wasn’t loaded in the project until drawing it in the inspector. We fixed the error message "called TableSetupColumn too many times" on Marketplace Data. We no longer resize the Export & Build window each time we change the export mode. Adding a new release note version now selects it. We now resize the "Remove Filter" window to the appropriate size upon first opening Input hints in the release notes tab now prevents users from entering irrelevant values. The input hints to change release note versions no longer lose focus each time a character change. TWITCH UPDATE We stream weekly on twitch.tv/MSFSOfficial. COMMUNITY VIDEO Going beyond a basic gamepad setup is one of the best ways to enhance your enjoyment by increasing the sense of immersion and realism while flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator. PC simmers have dozens of control options available to them, but those who enjoy MSFS on the Xbox platform have a more limited (but growing!) selection of flight controls. Which one is right for you? Over at YouTube, SimHanger Flight Simulation recently posted a run-down of the various yokes and throttles currently supported on the Xbox platform. If you’re an Xbox simmer thinking about upgrading your controls, watch this video for more information. 19. JUNE 23RD, 2022 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team Screenshot by pommes_l (Twitter) As we enter the dog days of summer, there are a few housekeeping announcements we’d like to share with you today. The first is a reminder that earlier this week, we released an Xbox-only Stability Test, which you can read more about here. The goal is to gather extra telemetry from Xbox users to help us track down the root cause of memory issues. Any Xbox Series X|S user is welcome to join. This build does not contain any fixes or improvements, just added telemetry logging. In addition, our next Dev Stream will be in August, as summer travel has arrived! We plan to update you further on the time and content of that Dev Stream as we get closer to the date. Lastly, join us next Wednesday, June 29th at 1900Z, as we host the kick-off of our MSFS Reno Race Series: Presented by Tobii. More information on that stream can be found here, and we hope to see you there as we will be giving away Reno Expansion packs and a Tobii Eyetracker 5! We are always on the look-out for sim pilots who are using MSFS in new, creative, and unique ways, and the team was delighted to recently discover community members Lillo and Roberto from Italy. Last week, they publicly unveiled their new project, flyLILLO.com. Lillo is a huge fan of aviation and possesses expert knowledge of the Airbus A320, but he is a quadriplegic who is physically unable to fly the plane using conventional controls. With the help of Roberto and the rest of the flyLILLO team, they have created a custom control setup that allows Lillo to fly using only head movements. In the video below, you can see Lillo piloting the A320 from Rome (LIRF) to Innsbruck (LOWI). You can follow the flying adventures of Lillo and Robero on their YouTube and Twitch channels. Another jet recently released for both PC and Xbox to the in-sim Marketplace was the HA-420 HondaJet from developer Marwan Gharib. YouTuber AvAngel recently put this new plane through its paces. Is it worth a purchase? Find out by watching AvAngel’s review video below (spoiler alert: YES!). 24. MAY 19TH, 2022 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team Screenshot by paulyoungphotos (Twitter) With the release of World Update IX: Italy and Malta, a mandatory update for the generic airport data folder on Xbox was also pushed which led to an increase of crashes on launch for both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming. We have identified the specific crash instances and plan to release a hot fix as quickly as possible (we are targeting Friday) to get Xbox and Xbox Cloud Gaming users up and running again. For those currently unable to launch on Xbox Series X|S due to World Update IX, we have just released a beta build to the Xbox Insider Hub. If you would like to help validate our fix, please join the build using the following steps: On your Xbox console, open the ‘Xbox Insider Hub’ (or install it via the Microsoft Store if you do not have it yet) On the left side, click ‘Previews’ Look for ‘Microsoft Flight Simulator Beta’ and click ‘Join’ to confirm your participation. Wait for the Join process to complete, then restart your console (hold down the Xbox button on the controller and select Restart console from the power menu). After the console restarts, launch Microsoft Flight Simulator and you’ll be prompted to update the game to the hot fix build. Feel free to let us know if your launch issue is fixed by reporting in this thread. Thank you! We sincerely apologize to all the affected Xbox players who are unable to play the sim at this time and recognize that more needs to be done on our end to ensure smoother updates. Thank you for your continued support and patience. We strive to be better with each update and we know that we have not met your expectations with this latest release. We look forward to the upcoming hotfix and your feedback in the forums and on socials. Third Party Developer Just Flight recently released a new complex airliner for Microsoft Flight Simulator, the BAe 146. We know many of you in the community are excited to fly one of the first “study level” airliners to be released for MSFS, so we’re planning this week’s Friday Fly-In to feature this new aircraft. IMPORTANT NOTE: you do not need to purchase the Just Flight 146 Professional to participate in this event. You can choose to fly any other plane with a similar cruise speed (suggestions in link below). To help make the 146 Professional addon as realistic as possible, Just Flight had hands-on access to a real BAe 146 (registration number G-JEAO). This plane is now retired from service and is on display to the public at the de Havilland Aircraft Museum in Hertfordshire. Our flight this week will see the group depart from EGVN, fly over this museum, then turn northward and make our way to Aberdeen, Scotland. Along the way, we will complete a few touch & go landings and pass many handcrafted POIs from World Update III: UK & Ireland. Click here for flight details. All are welcome to participate!
