P3Dv2.5; ASN does not simulate dense clouds

Recommended Posts

When I first tried out ASN + P3Dv2.5, the first thing I noticed was that the "low visibility" effect while flying into overcast stratus clouds is gone - and is still gone after SP2.

In FSX, when I ticked the "enchance overcast conditions", flying into a layer of overcast stratus will reduce the visibility in FSX to the lowest, thus, simulating a low visibility overcast. However, in P3Dv2.5 + ASN SP2, this feature is gone. Anyone else experiencing this?

Just tested again - this time, I matched all settings with my FSX ASN. Still no "low visibility" simulation while flying through clouds in P3Dv2.5. It also occurred in 2.4.

Is there special rendering programming involved that disables this effect?

Yep! Was disappointed that the low vis doesn't seem to be as "deep" (for lack of a better word) in P3d compared to FSX.

I really expected better from HiFi and this is the ONLY reason I'm not switching to P3D just yet. I have re-purchased my PMDG addons for P3D but until HiFi fixes this issue, I'm still strong with FSX.

[EDIT] it's not HiFi's fault. It's a P3D issue.

Clouds are not working properly in 2.5, it's nothing to do with ASN you will see the same with any weather program.

The Clouds are not scaled correctly and there is a lack of variation in certain cloud depiction types.

I don't think its HiFi's fault. The rendering of clouds in P3D 2.5 is sometimes completely off.

It's been happening since ASN was first compatible with P3D v2.X, not just 2.5. I put 2.5 in the title because that's what I'm currently running.

I guess it's more of a P3D thing then. Don't get me wrong, I love Active Sky Next and HiFi has all my respect; I'm just extremely surprised to see that FSX is outperforming a product in such constant development (Prepar3d). I'll drop a request about this cloud rendering thing to LM.

Hm, when I tick the "enhance overcast conditions", ASN simulates low visibility quite well. It's the popcorn clouds that is the real issue!

I just had a reply from HiFi - later versions of P3D have overridden the in-cloud effect of low visibility.

So its indeed prepar3d's issue, not HiFi.
