Power problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,I have a problem in that when I shut the engines down, I lose electrical power and all the displays go blank. I have started the APU prior to shutting down the displays, and also have ground power connected as per the OH panel. Does anybody have an idea what I am doing wrong. Also, I can't seem to load a saved flight plan back into the FMS. I have typed in all the waypoints and airways, and then saved the FPL as per FMS option, but cannot figure out how to reload it. The flight plan is in the directory Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 2002PMDGFlight Plans. They are all there - ending in .rteAny suggestions would be greatly appreciated.ThanksBryan

Bryan --I think(I can't say that I have loaded routes back into the FMC..) the proper procedure is to enter the filename into the COROUTE entry on the RTE 1 page. For example, a route with the name EDDFEGLL.rte would be entered EDDFEGLL, LSK by the COROUTE option.About your power problem, are your APU generators on? (meaning that the engines aren't supplying the electricty)EGT showing? APU bleed(not sure if this needs to be on) on? That is all that I can think of when I think of the APU and what is needed to power the plane after landing with engines off, but I don't fly the plane for a living(just an avid simmer) so I could be wrong/missing something ;-)

Hi Brian,When you select the External power on are the Eng Gen blue lights coming on? If the external power is engaged it should force the Eng Gen's off the bus. If this doesn't work try selecting the APU Gen switches on. Don't have an answer for ya on the FMC Flight Plans, Will see if Mr Merton does.RegardsPaul Gollnick :-coolTechnical Operations/Customer Operational SupportPrecision Manuals Development Groupwww.precisionmanuals.com

Hi Fred,Thanks for the quick reply.Regarding the routes: when you save the routes, it labels the route as 'EGKKGMMX01', which is what I type in the FMC Route Page under the Co Route entry, and it comes back and says: 'Not In Database'. Not critical anyway.Regarding the Power problem, Yup the APU is running and the EGT gauge is indicating a shade over 7. APU bleed is on. Ground Power available is lit. Bus Trans is on Auto, and I get the Gen Off Bus lit only while the engines are off. Also, I get a lit drive light for the IDG. Apparently the IDG can disconnect if there is external power connected. The Gen Off Bus lights mean that the IDG isn't supplying power to the realted transfer bus, which isn't surprising seeing that the engines are off. Still can't see why the avionics are being starved of power if the APU is running and the GPU is connected.....THanksBryan

Hi Paul - thanks for the replyI have selected the APU Gen switches to on - both of them. This is the sequence that I follow: Engines are running - there are no master caution lights on, nor on the overhead panel are the any bright blue lights. Then I start the APU. The EGT rises to just under 4 and just over 7 when I switch APU bleed on. Initially I get a Oil Pressure warning, but this goes off when the APU has started. Then the APU GEN OFF BUS light comes on and then the Dual Bleed light comes on too. Then I shut the engines down and the two sets of SPAR and ENG VALVE Closed lights come on. Then Dual Bleed light then goes off. Then all the lights come on. Then I select APU GEN both to ON, and then all the lights go off. Except for: ENG 1&2 Low Oil Pressure and ENG1&2 Drive lights. If I select Ground Power On, then the APU GEN OFF BUS light comes on, but this is rectified by selecting the APU GEN switches to on.I have tried various combinationes, but can't get the avionics to work without the engines running.ThanksBryan

Also, if I use the AC & DC Metering panel, the APU GEN and GRD PWR both give readings.Bryan

Sorry Bryan, I guess I'm not following the problem. What you described is exactly how it is supposed to work. Are your avionics going offline when you do this? If so are you selecting another power source before shutting the engines down. If not it will not automatically transfer like the 757 does. You have to select either Grd Pwr or APU Pwr to take over the bus before you shut the engine down. Also, is the STBY power switch still turned on?RegardsPaul Gollnick :-coolTechnical Operations/Customer Operational SupportPrecision Manuals Development Group[www.precisionmanuals.com]

Hi Paul,That's the way I also thought it would work. Yes, the SBY power switch is on, and I have tried both the GRD power and APU power, after the engines have totally spooled down, and the IDG is no longer operative ,the power switches off. Maybe I should re-install???Bryan

Bryan,Very strange indeed. If you are going to reinstall make sure you generate you termination code before you do so you can get your new license right away. You will need to send me your new computer code once you reinstall.RegardsPaul GollnickTechnical Operations/Customer Operational SupportPrecision Manuals Development Group[www.precisionmanuals.com]

Paul, have I misunderstood this license key procedure completely? I thought that if you re-install on the very same computer, no hardware changes, you can use the old license key. Please correct me if I'm wrong!Best regardsKrister

Krister,That is the way it is supposed to work. We have had unexplained ( and infrequent I might add) instances where the license seems to get preturbed when things get moved. The license mover utility coming should hwelp eliminate this once and for all.
