August 10, 200322 yr Jim, Steve --On its way :-hahJim,Just curious, do you run linux on your desktop computer? I see your a LCP so I am kinda curious ;-)
August 10, 200322 yr Hello Fred,I put that there because I saw that you are a Linux user and thought it might catch your attention. ;) Yes, I run Linux on my desktop, when I boot into Linux of course. The story is though, that I haven't even run Linux in a while and am a little rusty. And for a good while I was using that other HD space for some other things. But not long ago I cleared it off there and the HD is now open. And so, I've been thinking about getting it back on there sometime soon. But because since it's been quite a while and I'm rusty, I don't usually include Linux in my System Specs. But here's my REAL System Specs from the last time I had Linux installed.3.06 Ghz Intel P4 on Asus P4T533-C(533 MHz FSB), 1 GB PC1066 Samsung RDRAM, NEC MultiSync FE2111SB 22" Monitor, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Videocard w/Omega Drivers v2.4.74a, DirectX 9.0b, Creative Audigy2 Soundcard, 120 GB w/8 MB Cache Western Digital HD, 36 GB Seagate 15,000 RPM SCSI HD, WinXP Pro SP1, Debian Sid (a.k.a unstable)/GNU Linux 2.4.21-pre4-ac4 EXT3 filesystem(on the SCSI HD).
August 10, 200322 yr My story is something similiar. I haven't touched linux in a couple of months, but the other day I got inspired. Previous to my latest gentoo install, I have run every flavor or Redhat from 7.1 on, and every flavor of Mandrake from 8.0 on. They really irritated me with the bloat. I was under the impression that Linux was supposted to be 'bloatless', or nearly so ;-)Then I tried Debian stable(can't remember the version). I liked the idea of the packaging system, but unforutnetly I couldn't ever get X Windows to work. n00bitis I know ;-)Then I tried LFS. Now that is a real mans OS. Unfortunetly, I really didn't want to mess with trying to get all the latest patches, and yadda yadda to keep my system up to date. Then came my savior, Gentoo. I got that thing installed, compiled, and working in a couple of hours. Then I started compiling the packages that I needed. It has been close to a week, and I am almost done installing the packages I need. I have a couple of problems, but hey, I hope I can figure them out. Two really bug me, mozilla(I refuse to browse with a lesser browser than mozilla ;-)) just closes randomly. And either KDE or XFree locks up randomly. I will get these issues though :)hehe, back on topic now :-hah
