August 12, 200322 yr I noticed that I do not get a wind arrow and speed readout on the ND when I am sitting on the runway although there is actual wind (checked by hitting Shift + Z (German keyboard)). Once I am airborne and have some altitude I get the arrow and speed. Anyone else havingthat prob and is there a sollution? David P.EDDW
August 12, 200322 yr Hi David,I think you may have to ask Mr Boeing for the solution :). I know for a fact that on the 767 you do not get wind readouts on the ground - I suspect this is the same for the 737 NG, although I'm not 100% certain.Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
August 12, 200322 yr Wow, that answer came quick! Thanks Gosta!I just wondered because I get that readout with an airbus addon.I should have thought a bit more before I asked my question becauseit doesnt seem realistic to get that readout on the ground since the software that is hooked up to the INS calculates wind directionand speed and it can only do that when the AC is in motion and notconnected to the ground.Maybe I should talk more to myself or rather get more sleep :))David P.EDDW
August 12, 200322 yr Do you know that on the real NG AND this 737NG in MAP MODE the HDG BUG (White) is *dis-placed* towards the relitive wind direction? It also shows track offset in VOR MODE ;)[h5]Best Wishes,Randy J. August 12, 200322 yr How would the aircraft know the wind while it is sitting on the ground? It deduces the wind by taking into account ground track, ground speed, heading, and true airspeed.Lee Hetherington (KBED)
August 12, 200322 yr Sigh.. All these computers, and it can't stick out a finger out the window?... lol Mats JohanssonPMDG Flight Test Dept | Asus Z270-A | Intel i5-7600K @ 4.8 GHz OC/H2O | nVidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB OC/O2|
August 13, 200322 yr LOL, good one. Does it come with a dog? If not the one in my Airbus is getting bored and would like a change of scene.:+
August 13, 200322 yr "How would the aircraft know the wind while it is sitting on the ground? It deduces the wind by taking into account ground track, ground speed, heading, and true airspeed."Would there be anything to stop the ND wind display showing the wind directly on the nose (dead ahead) during the takeoff run, Lee? I'm thinking the aircraft could quite easily compute the difference between airspeed (via the pitot-static system) and IRS groundspeed to give a wind value directly on the nose? TAS on Boeings is normally computed within the ADC using basic air data such as pitot-static and TAT.The Boeing 737NG Maintenance Manual simply says that the wind vector is not available until TAS is 100Kt. No mention of air-ground. Can a 737NG pilot confirm that the wind display appears only after takeoff? (Not that he/she should be looking at this sort of thing during the takeoff roll ;-))Thanks.Cheers.Ian.
August 13, 200322 yr I doubt it would be very reliable (comparing the two pitot tubes). Relative wind directly off the side shouldn't affect either pitot tube much. A true crosswind with TAS 100kts would put the relative wind fairly forward, but still then you have to factor in how the wind flows over the fuselage, etc. It isn't like they have a wind vane up on top of the plane. :-)I think the windsock/ATIS is a better indicator at the airport.Lee Hetherington (KBED)
August 13, 200322 yr Speaking about wind, I`m having a problem here. Everytime I D/L real-world weather, I often get no wind at all. Last time the windsocks at ENBR were vibrating like it was an eathquake in the area! I guess this is a FS2004 bug?

(Not that he/she should be looking>at this sort of thing during the takeoff roll ;-))There are a few factors playing here, TAS, Wheel speed and ground sensing and last options :-D they are so good.Basic is: for wind to show on ND you need to be off ground with TAS above something i cant remembet, but 100KT sounds about right.During landing, then we say it a little different, as long as wheel speed is above 60KT (dont know if the number is presice) then you will have the wind vector, this is for a go around situation.DennisLicensed on the B737NG and the Airbus 319-321 as a technician (B1 and B2)
August 13, 200322 yr 737NG-OPSMNL 10.40.4Wind direction /speed and wind arrow:Indicates wind direction, with respect to display orientation and heading/track reference. Displayed if wind is greater the 6 knots and blanked if wind magnitutde becomes less thean 4 knots. Dashes are displayed untill TAS is greater than 101 knots.Randy J. Smith Randy J Smith
August 13, 200322 yr Hi Andrew, that's a problem with the weather server FS uses - it's the same as for FS2000 and FS2002, where 'real' weather, especially outside the US was anything but. If you want accurate weather, I recommend you wait until ActiveSky 2 is out (but I'm a bit biased there :)).Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
August 13, 200322 yr Hi Gosta,Left out in the cold so to speak :) I will check out ActiveSky, thanks for the tip. I might get biased too!
August 14, 200322 yr "During landing, then we say it a little different, as long as wheel speed is above 60KT (dont know if the number is presice) then you will have the wind vector, this is for a go around situation."Dennis...Does this mean that the wind vector displayed during rollout is simply held in memory from when the aircraft was in flight (just prior to touchdown)? Otherwise the aircraft would have to compute wind with the aircraft on the ground(???).Thanks.Cheers.Ian.
