Starting with correct time and date

Featured Replies

I have been having fits trying to get FS9 to start with today's date and time. I have system time checked on the options, I create a flight at the airport that I always start from and set the time and date and save it. Then I exit FS9, and a few hours later, start it again and I have the time from when I intially created the flight. Also the date never changes. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Bob,Set a flight to start at an airport in your real world timezone. Then save it and be sure to tick the box Use as default flight. The "Create a flight" menu uses the default flight for time and date. This should do the trick.Hope it helps,

I am going to try creating one with a FS9 aircraft tonight and then switch to PMDG at startup and see if that makes a difference.

That's really odd!?Well, that's the only thing I do to get it to work. So I'm afraid I'm out of options. :-(Cheers,

Hey,Don't have a clue how to fix your time problem.I'm posting to warn you that saving any flight and tick that evil little 'Use as default flight' box is a bad idea. You don't notice but ticking that box writes unseen crap in around FS and can cause FS to become unstable, especially with 3rd party addons (any addons that is)You should always start FS with the default being the 172 at SeaTac and then switch aircraft/time etc as per normal through the create a flight window.Saving flights is no problem at all, just don't make them the default.CheersDavid

David,Would be interesting to see what evidence you have to your statement. What "unseen crap is written in around FS"? Warning other people is fine as long as you have good evidence for your warning. Otherwise it's like crying "wolf!" (if you ever heard that story?). I have a saved default flight with the default C172 at CYKZ, Canada with clear wx at present. Before I used to have the same scenario but location at ESSA Sweden. And I never, repeat never had FS9 unstable or causing CTDs. I did have some glitches but that was due to other known facts.Cheers,

Hey Mats,Hold your fire mate, I'm just the messenger (you heard that story? ;))!I got the warning from the guys over at DreamFleet, they reccommend it to everyone. And to say they know more about the internal goings on within FS than I do would be one of the more spectacular understatements of this year. The only evidence I have is that I've recommended this action to many people who were having problems and it's helped them out. Coincidence? I don't know either way for sure. All I know is what I've been told, and I've been told that using something other than the original default flight can cause major upsets. You say that your new default flight still use the default 172, perhaps it is something to do with add-on aircraft then.As I said, I'm only passing along information. So far though I've no evidence to show that this is bad advice.I'll have a scout about to see if I can find the original thread I read this in.Cheers,David

Hi David,I think that warning is just a little off. I always save my PMDG 737 as the default flight where I landed it last. Have never had a problem, and have not seen any garbage stored in the FS9.cfg. Just to give a reference to this I have about 500 hours and at least 200 flights under my belt with the NG being saved as the default. Bob

Hello all,Ok, let me put this a way that can't be confused, don't shoot the bloody messenger! After an hour searching the forums I found the thread I was looking for. Turns out that indeed my advice was a little out of context but in my defence I read this way back when and didn't remember it word for word.Read it [a href=http://www.flightsimnetwork.com/dcforum/DCForumID9/58.html]here.[/a]As you can see my advice (which I should have kept to myself it seems) was not accurate enough. Considering though that most people fly third party aircraft exclusively you can see why it would be prudent to use a stable, non conflicting, start point for each flight. Now it might not affect you if you have 5 hours or 500 hours on ONE type only (i.e. you fly nothing but one type) 'cause there is less chance of a conflict, but if you like a little verity in life (which I hear is healthy now) and fly different aircraft then there could be a chance for a conflict.Bob (second Bob that is), I didn't mention anything about the FS9.cfg.As a last note, one sure fire way to stay on the correct date each and every time you load up is to only use the default flight. Each saved flight saves the time and date in it so you'll never get an updated time from a saved flight. So to the original Bob, it ain't possible and you're not doing anything wrong.Have a good one,David

David,Ok, we'll refrain from shooting the messenger. Ok?On the other hand we would like you to do something as well.Don't act as a messenger if you can't remember the message ok? ;-)Seriously. I do agree on that you shouldn't use a 3rd party aircraft as the aircraft of choice. You should always save the default flight with a default MS aircraft as the C172. This will ensure a stable, non-conflicting start point for you, whether it is at KSEA or any other airport. The default flight, if saved in your own time zone and if system time is checked in FS settings, will set the time in FS to your current time in the "Create a flight" dialog. What might happen though is that the FS date might be off with a day. I consider this a smaller problem than the time though.Cheers,

I got up at 3AM this morning and tried several things prior to going back to bed.I created a Default flight using the Cessna 172 instead of PMDG. Saved it as the default flight, made sure system time was checked in the menu. I closed down FS9 and 15 minutes later I restarted FS9. This is where I get confused. When I restart FS9 , should it automatically start the flight or should it come up with the menu of saved flights with the last flight I flew highlighted, then requiring me to hit the "Fly Now " button? Reason I ask this question is because that is what FS9 does when I restart it. Since I am apparently starting a saved flight, it always starts at the time and date when I originally saved the flight. Checking or not checking the Default Flight box prior to saving it seems to make no difference at all. I tried one more thing, I navigated to the " Default Flight" in the FS9 menu and of course th C-172 in Seattle loads.. Very strange, and I think it probably is something I will have to live with.

I think I found the problem. I went into the file for the saved flight that I wanted to use for default that is in the My Documents/Flight Simulator Files Directory with Notepad. I checked for notepad to open all files rather than just text files and selected the flight I wanted to make the default. In that file the Date and Time and season were all listed. I deleted all that infomation and resaved the file. I restarted FS9 selected that flight and it now comes up with the correct time and date and season. In other words, if it is not stipulated in the saved flight file , it uses system info. :)

Thanks for sharing Bob, tried it myself right now and it works perfect and just the way you describe.
