Observation regarding "bank limit selector"

Featured Replies

The "Automatic Flight Management Systems" manual says this (on page 9-6 in the "ROLL Command Mode" section):"At no time will any autopilot roll mode exceed the bank limit selector or maneuvering speed limits in order to maintain course."In my experience with the PMDG 737NG 600/700, I have lowered the bank limit selector to the lowest (10), and still my LNAV commanded turns are very very steep. In fact, my LNAV commanded turns are very steep regardless of what bank limit settings I may be using, it actually seems as if it ignores the bank limit setting altogether. The only time that I have seen the autopilot use the bank limit setting is when I manually set a heading. Now, is this a bug or is this the way the real plane works? Or, is the manual incorrect?Best regards from Miami/Florida (KMIA),Kerke

Kerke,The manual is wrong! :+The only time the bank limiter is in effect is in HDG mode IIRC.Hope it helps,

Yes, but I too want to know if in the real aircraft that the Bank Limiter doesnt control the amount of bank using LNAV either. This seems to be a really important function of the FMS of an airliner. I cant imagine the real one not being limited by the bank limiter when using LNAV.thanks!Eric T737NG Builder

if that's what's written in the manual, then it's incorrect. The bank selector has no function in LNAV. Here, the FMC will compute the bank angle based on quite a few variables such as true airspeed, altitude etc.The only modes limited by the bank angle selector are (usually*):heading select and VOR mode*usually, as its a company option.Regards,Mark

I might be wrong but I believe at cruising altitude, the FMC will limit bank automatically to 5-10 degress max in a real a/c.If is doesnt in the sim, I'm guessing someones stuffed up?

No one has stuffed up.The PMDG sim works just like the real thing.I will check my manual when I get 5 minutes to see if there is an error in it but I will be surprised if there is.. Boeing are right onto this kind of thing normally.Rgds,

And let's not forget that some real birds have at times EXCEEDED bank limit in LNAV although it is not suppose to! Yes the manual is WRONG, it's not the first area that it is wrong on, the V2 setting is another example......BUT the sim is right.Best Wishes,[h4]Randy J.
