Arming VNAV ....?

Featured Replies

I thought I had managed to arm VNAV along with LNAV on the ground prior to takeoff a couple of times. At this point, I can only arm LNAV on the ground now and I have to lift off and be in climbout to arm VNAV first and then activate it by switching on the AP. Should I be able to arm VNAV on the ground prior to the t/o roll?Jonathan

Jonathan,Nope. VNAV is not 'armable' on ground on the NG. Might have been possible in the Classic series (300-500). At least I know it was in the DF simulation of the -400.Hope it helps,

And even in LNAV you MUST be with certain criteria for it to ARM on the ground. Best Wishes,[h4]Randy J. Yes, I found that the single greatest error I made and still make is failing to insert a departure runway. But I am getting the hang of it better with each flight and I have developed my own type of SoP along with the official manuals and so on.Jonathan

For example when flying a STAR the first leg will be from the runway and the LNAV would arm without problems, however if the first leg is awa from the runway on a different course LNAV will not arm. If you want to learn how the procedures for engaging the autoflight modes actually work in the real world, I highly suggest checking out FS2Crew - it does everything by the book exactly how a real crew would accomplish the takeoff and transition to LNAV, VNAV.

Is FS2Crew a big affair requiring a lot of sim "homework" or is it a fairly simple add-on? Just curious...Thanks!Jonathan

It takes a lot of time to get used to ....... and in to, Jonathan.I'm still not sure whether it's for me. Plenty of evidence that I'm in the minority though! It all comes down to how much time you want to/can invest in the pursuit of operational fidelity. Each to their own :)

Nick:Thanks for your post. Yeah, quite right !It's prolly not for me then. I'm already overwhelmed with everything else I have installed in FS9 !Jonathan

Nail on the head.I think anyone considering FS2Crew needs to be thoroughly at home with flying the NG first to avoid being "swamped".Enjoy your weekend (what's left of it!)
