How do yall fly?

Featured Replies

I think it should be phrased "How do all ya's all fly"? ...plural.I am sure some southerner will correct me, don't mess with Texas and all that, eh ;-)As for flying, with some minor exceptions, pretty much as Mr. Elchitz describes...except...- Map mode I use almost entirely. Not sure, but I think it is acceptable in normal SOP's for all airlines to use the MAP mode in all phases as long as raw data is verified for certain approaches.- Signs go on in the descent at about 18000 feet or a couple minutes ahead of any sharp turns or cloud cover / turb.- I try to get off the A/P as early as possible in the descent. Lately I have been lazy and shut off A/P when I have the runway in sight. - Fuel planning - I use basic rules of thumb and usually land with about 8-12,000 lbs remaining, try not to land with anything more than 14,000lbs at any time...9,000lbs in the FAR reserve limit I think.- If < 300,000 TOW then Flap 5 : If > 300,000 TOW then Flap 15- Landing - usually Flap 25- All of the above will be influenced by conditions, runway length, my mood, etc.- Derated takeoff's are common for me....again depends on weight, runway, wxr, mood, etc.Question for the PIC-heads....in real world, is it proper to apply a derate with TAI operating? I think not, but not certain....anyone, Bhuler?Rob.

Hi All:Thought I would add my 2 cents worth. I won't go into all the little details just to save time and space.I fly primarily for Pacific West Airways (PWA) so you will see me online with the callsign PWA5121. I go to the flight bid board and select a week's assignment. Example this week is KLAX-PHNL, PHNL-KORD, KORD-KEWR, KEWR-KATL & KATL-KLAX.I use several sources for flight planning:FlightPlan.com: http://www.fltplan.com/Flight Planning Database: http://www.asalink.net/davideg/rfquery.htmlVitez Preferred Routes: http://www.vitez.net/routes/default.aspCurrent Weather: NOAA SITEAfter I'm happy with my route I then go to PM Flight Planner which will calulate all dispatch requirements (fuel, weights etc)and then prepare a flight briefing package which will include notams and weather.Next it's time to head to the flight deck. First I adjust my weight and balance using the "767 Weight & Balance Program". Next start "ServerInfo" & "Chat Scroll" then FS2002. Position a/c at the start gate and load the appropriate amount of fuel. Then crank up Vatsim and obtain clearances. Update the FMC along with preflight and prestart checklists. Pushback and startup.Obtain taxi instructions and away we go.As I said I did not go into all the little details but this a general idea of what I do for each flight. The links are provided for those who may want to use the same services.

Hmmmm, well if I am in a mood to simulate Real World Flying I:Get exactly eight hours of rest in a lumpy bed prior to waiting for the

O.K. Tim,Now you did it.....you made me spew (cold) coffee all over my monitor! One other thing....get your neighbor "all liquored up", and have him stand at your front door to berate and belittle you about how "this flight never leaves on time" and how "the last time I flew with this d*mn airline, they served me cool beer! Not cold...cool! This airline sucks!"(actually had a customer bounce one of the "hockey puck" sandwiches we serve off a flight attendants head one afternoon. He promptly announced (with some pride I heard), that "we got better food than this in prison!" Lovely thought, eh?LOL........BBall---------------------Capt. Dean,,,,For BBall and myself its a case of "Been there, done that".....I wasn't really "complaining", just looking how you all can share in our the fun and games before launch. As far as "Prison Food" BBALL, thank gawd the food joints are INSIDE security zone! You know, if Wendy's, McDonald's, Cinnebones'(mine are always stale) had their own discreet ACARS we could order thru I think we'd be on to something.....I do like the neighbor drunk though, nice touch.Off to KBOS-----T

You have FAR too much time on your hands! (Chuckle)It will take 15 pages to get the general reader what SMAC means-generally it is imparted to the side of the head of those who don't follow it during sim-rides at NATCO.Off to KBOS-T
