Magnetic switches / circuit brakers?

Featured Replies

Hi,i saw today the last excellent video from Project Magenta's 737 cockpit and i saw many switches-circuit brakers like the real aircraft. The first was a toggle switch, this one for A/T which was switching to off position when pushing the A/T disconnect from throttle. The second, was the ignition rotary switches, also with magnetic contact.Do you know where we can found and in which price such switches?regardsEddie ArmaosAthens-Greece

Hi EddieNot sure where you can buy these things and I'm sure they would be expensive. Thought I would let you know I am working on the design of a fairly simple home built rotary starter switch for my 767 sim. Using a cheap 12 position rotary set up to suit (5 positions in my case), with a nylon wheel fitted on a rear extended shaft. This has a notch in it and is spring loaded to the off (Auto for 767)position. when turned to the left for starting (Grd position in 767) a small solenoid operated arm latches into the notch and holds it there until the sim returns the software switch to Auto. The solenoid is actuated by an fsuipc offset for the Start (Grd) position being ON via, in my case, a relay operated by the LED output current(there is a small amount of circuitry to do this)generated in my case by an FSbus LED board. When the sim returns the software switch to Auto, the Grd switch goes from 1 to 0 and the relay switches off the solenoid. I have priced some small solenoids for around US$8 and a similar price for the relay setup...all up around $20US per switch.I intend putting up some details on the forum when I get something underway....no promises regarding when! Let me know what you think...any suggestions welcome.

I have seen your cockpit many times and i really admire your work. You have the ability to be inventive and working with unsual materials, like wood - buttons!Anyway, i'm not so good in mechanical constructions :-( and is hard to me to realize even the gear lever mechanism. Yes i can imagine how have to be, maybe i can also make a draw, but i can't find the materials and the method to finalize it !!Any information in the future, will be very helpful.ThanksEddie ArmaosAthens-Greeceeddiea ad hol dot gr

Hi Ian,Sounds very good, I'm interested in the details. Although I'm very happy with my starter switches, they are ofcourse not as the real thing, having to switch them back to AUTO manually after the engine has spoolded up.. Nicowww.nicokaan.nl1704.png

Easier you can use a servo which push the rotary back in auto mode after ignition ...BOB

Yes it's sounds great, but the big problem in Greece, is to find gears. We need gear for servos, also for throttles, so do you know any web shop for gears?thanksEddie ArmaosAthens

Thanks Norbert, i will also try to fing Lego in Greece.Btw, did you receive my email before 2 days?thanksEddie ArmaosAthens-Greece

The best "toy" gears are those of Knex. But unfortunately they are not exported out of North America...I wonder why ?!George DorkofikisAthens, Greecehttp://online.vatsimindicators.net/811520/1704.png

Guys, in old VCR,s Fax , and copy mashines you can find some treasures As older as better;-) , like wine

How true!Unfortunately (once again!), over here they just throw them in the trash instead of recycling them...I used one a gear from a very old HP Laser printer in my VS knob!BTW, excellent source the Middsex university! Thanks for the link!George DorkofikisAthens, Greecehttp://online.vatsimindicators.net/811520/1704.png

They do sell Knex gears in Belgium, so I don't see why they wouldn't export outside of N-America?

Strike it through... It was years ago when I visited Knex.com and itstated somewhere that they don't export.I just revisited their site and they also have online shops in Europe! So, whatever was the reason for not exporting back then, it's no longer valid.Apologies for the mistake. I should have checked first. For what it counts, it's good new after all!George DorkofikisAthens, Greecehttp://online.vatsimindicators.net/811520/1704.png

No Eddie, I did not receive any email from you.regardsNorbert Bosch
