August 31, 200421 yr I am looking to change my Geforce 4600 Ti to a geforce 6800 Ultra.Apparently they are now available in the UK. My reason for wanting to do this is:1.To improve the image quality by making it sharper.2.To reduce the jaggies, shimmering and Blurry textures (we sometimes get in heavy textures)Does anyone know if the 6800 Ultra can do this, I would love to smooth out some of those jaggies. Best Wishes,ChrisEGBB

September 1, 200421 yr Chris, I am not sure how much the new card will get rid of your shimmering and Blurry textures. About a year ago, I switched from the Ti 4600 to a ATI 9800 Pro (128mb). I still get the shimmering, especially in areas that require a lot of video card / cpu power. I am running a P4 HT 2.8 Ghz with a gig of high speed ram on a Asus P4P800 motherboard. I have a sneeky feeling that our shimering/blurryness is due more to the programming code used in FS2004 than the hardware we run it on.Terry
September 1, 200421 yr Chris, I just upgraded to a FX5900XT yesterday from a TI4600 and I got an improvement without a doubt. The image quality is sharper, the jaggies that I had are gone, totally!, shimmering is much less than it was and blurry textures have improved a small amount. I have to say that blurry textures was not a big issue for me before so I am not 100% sure about the improvement here. I would say that you will benefit from upgrading without a doubt. My system is a XP2500, 1 gig memory, Soundblaster Audigy, please note that I only have the capability to run 4X AGP so I can not comment on how much better it would be in 8X. I also got a performance boost from the new card so I have won all the way around! If your main problem is jaggies a new card will take care of it, I was amazed at the difference! Mind you though that I am assuming that the 6800 Ultra will perform well, I am only quoting my experience with my FX5900XT.Good luck!Philip Olsonhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg
September 1, 200421 yr Shimmering still happens for anything above Mip-map 4 and this occurs regardless if you buy the latest card from Nvidia or ATI. This is based on some recent info on the subject on the PMDG forum.Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg Michael J.
September 4, 200421 yr Thanks Guys,Your help is much appreciated.I have read elsewhere the PCI express video cards are going to be the best to reduce shimmering, which sounds good if true!Best Wishes to all,Chris
