September 4, 200421 yr I just ordered a Asus Motherboard with the 775 socket for my next upgrade. Im getting the motherboard this month. Memory next and videocard and processor (3.6 or 3.8) some time in late Oct/early Nov. Ive been checking out current PCI video cards, and found there are not too many available. The ones available, are not the latest chipset. I was hoping the 6800 would be available in PCI express. Ive seen reviews about it, but no one has one. Does anyone have any ideas when or if this card will be available? Rob
September 4, 200421 yr Can you tell me why you will want PCI express when the technology has not matured to the point where theres any reasonable advantage to AGP ? according to more or less ALL reputable Hardware review sites ?? September 4, 200421 yr Thats true, However, if you want to go beyond 3.4 mhz, (and we all will at some point) there is only one way to go right now. Since Flight Simulator is the only program I have, that (with everything maxed) makes my 3.2 go to its knees on occasion. FS is much more effected by CPU speed than the video card. Each time I get a new video card, I get maybe 1-2 fps more (if that much), but even going from a 3.0 to a 3.2 gave me at least 4-5 fps more. I would have to say that if upgrade my 3.2 to a 3.4 (max speed a 478 board will take) and upgrade my 5950 to 6800 (AGP), ill get about a 4-5 fps increase. If I go to the new 775 socket board with a 3.8 cpu and a 5900 pci express card, (or 6800 when its out) ill get about 8-10 fps increase. (ill have to lay out more $$$ for this option). So I decieded to go with the more expensive option, because I can't see spending money for a 6800 AGP card when I can't go to the faster, newer CPU's. September 7, 200421 yr they make 775 boards in AGP. abit As8 is one of them, and there are a handful of others. i think it's fine if you want PCI express, just understand your graphics card choices are going to be limited for a while. But anyway, you can definately get 775 in AGP, so if that's the only reason you're getting PCIe, then just get a 775 AGP board like the Abit As8. Personally I don't think we're at a point where getting PCIe is a must, as AGP will be around for a while, and any upgradability issues won't really come into play for a few more years (and by then you'll probably be ready for a new mobo anyway). but on the other hand there's no reason for someone to be obnoxious about your choice. if you want PCIe i think thats fine.
September 8, 200421 yr As Tom's hardware article showed PCI Express has zero (yes, zero) effect on current games (FS2004 included).Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg Michael J.
September 8, 200421 yr So .. Can you tell me Where exactly in my previous comment you can find any hint of being obnoxious ??.. Any ??? .. I asked a direct question ... if you dont like it .. ignore it .. at least the person who started the thread realizes the difference from a direct question and an obnoxious retort... as this one is ...
