September 13, 200421 yr Hi all, does anyone recomend a certain Mobo for the AMD 64 3400 CPU? I'm currently researching different reviews on diferent boards. I was planing on purchasing the ASUS k8n-e Deluxe. Is this a good board? Does any currenly have this board? Thanks,Bill Asus Tuf Gaming Plus B550 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D - Asus GeForce 4080 RTX OC Edition - 64GB DDR4 (3600Mhz) - EVGA 850W Power Supply - 2X 1 TB NVME PCIE gen 4 - Windows 11 (25H2)
September 13, 200421 yr If you want to go with Asus brand - I suggest you go for Asus A8V - socket 939. I myself went for Abit AV8 (socket 939) simply because of its overclocking capabilities. Both are very good boards and with practically identical performance/stability reviews.Michael J.WinXP-Home,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8, Radeon X800 Pro,WD 36GB Raptor,1 GB PC3200 http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg Michael J.
September 13, 200421 yr Author Thanks for the reply, how was the install? Are you using RAID or just one HD? Plus does it have a built in eithernetcard? Thanks,Bill Asus Tuf Gaming Plus B550 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D - Asus GeForce 4080 RTX OC Edition - 64GB DDR4 (3600Mhz) - EVGA 850W Power Supply - 2X 1 TB NVME PCIE gen 4 - Windows 11 (25H2)
September 13, 200421 yr Someone did the install for me.No RAID.The network card is built-in, I am using DSL.Michael J.WinXP-Home,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8, Radeon X800 Pro,WD 36GB Raptor,1 GB PC3200 http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg Michael J.
September 14, 200421 yr i have an ABit av8 (939). install was easy, no problems. if you are using SATA hardrives, then you have to install the SATA drivers that come on a floppy with the mobo before you install windows. there are instructions on how to do this, it's easy. when you install the SATA drivers i think is when you setup RAID. i can't remember though, im only using one HD.
September 14, 200421 yr Author Should I get the new pin series mobos, or is it too soon? I was originally going to get the current pin size cpu. Thanks,Bill Asus Tuf Gaming Plus B550 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D - Asus GeForce 4080 RTX OC Edition - 64GB DDR4 (3600Mhz) - EVGA 850W Power Supply - 2X 1 TB NVME PCIE gen 4 - Windows 11 (25H2)
September 14, 200421 yr I persoanlly would go for S939, just because thats going to be the mainstream socket and with many more options going to be open in the future for it.
September 14, 200421 yr Author I was thinking about it, however would a 480W PS do the trick....plus is there anyone out there with the new socket type CPU running flight sim? Thanks,Bill Asus Tuf Gaming Plus B550 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D - Asus GeForce 4080 RTX OC Edition - 64GB DDR4 (3600Mhz) - EVGA 850W Power Supply - 2X 1 TB NVME PCIE gen 4 - Windows 11 (25H2)
September 15, 200421 yr A 480W PSU will do it. I have seen a few people who have Athlon 3500+ (which is the new S939) and all of them are very happy with the results.
September 15, 200421 yr Author Is there a noticible difference with the 754 and 939 pins? My machine is really going to be uses mostly for Flight sim and other big time games like Battlefield 1942, and next years Battlefleld 2, Silent Hunter III, Far Cry, Doom 3..stuff like that.BillIm thinking about these so far:Socket 754:ASUS K8N-EASUS K8VMSI K8N Neo PlatinumSocket 939:MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Asus Tuf Gaming Plus B550 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D - Asus GeForce 4080 RTX OC Edition - 64GB DDR4 (3600Mhz) - EVGA 850W Power Supply - 2X 1 TB NVME PCIE gen 4 - Windows 11 (25H2)
September 16, 200421 yr Well I do know that S939 does have a faster Hyper Transport, 2GB's I believe, and also does support Dual channel RAM, now if it has a big effect on performance I don't know.
September 16, 200421 yr the main reason to get the 939 is becuase the fastest chip for the skt 754 will be 3700+, whereas new chips will be developed for 939 in the future. so it's really an upgradability issue. however, the price of the skt 754 3400+ is very attractive, and the performance is close to the skt 939 3500+. the 3400+ doesn't have the dual channel RAM, but it's larger cache makes up for it.and 480w powersupply is plenty. the one i bought for my rig is 470w, and i have a 6800gt.EDIT: i originally posted my performance at KSEA here, and even though my rig performed well, i have to re-bench because i just remembered my drivers were screwed up...
September 16, 200421 yr one more thing bill. if you play a lot of first person shooters or other games, the athlon 64's perform very well. in fact, general gaming seems to be where they have their strongest showings against the P4's. but dont take my word for it, go look at some benchmarks.
September 16, 200421 yr Author Thanks for the response....Im heading to newegg to get more parts.Thanks,Bill Asus Tuf Gaming Plus B550 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D - Asus GeForce 4080 RTX OC Edition - 64GB DDR4 (3600Mhz) - EVGA 850W Power Supply - 2X 1 TB NVME PCIE gen 4 - Windows 11 (25H2)
September 16, 200421 yr i just remembered that when i did that fs2004 fps observations on my rig a few weeks ago my GPU drivers were screwed up and giving me a really low 3dmark score. i fixed the drivers, and i dont know if it'll change anything in terms of fs2004 fps, but i have to rebench. nonetheless im pleased with the way it runs the sim.
