excessive overspeed cause?

Featured Replies

i've been seeing excessive overspeeds on my flights lately. i originally thought there was something wrong with a config file in the specific aircraft but i have seen this in several aircraft now. the only way i can avoid the overspeeding is by taking off the auto throttle. the minute i put it back on...zoom....away we go.my question regarding activesky is this.....this started to happen right around the time i installed activesky. i read a posting in another forum that stated this could be caused by having Simulated Winds Aloft checked...that when the wind direction changed this user experienced overspeeding. one of my recent flights was going fine....at altitude, no overspeeding. i had to step out for a couple of hours and when i returned i was near 650 mph!! my thought was then that maybe the winds aloft had changed while i was away. possible??i just learned this today and haven't had a chance to try without Simulated Winds Aloft unchecked...just figured i'd throw this out here to see if anyone knew.btw....the wake turbulence feature ROCKS! followed a little too closely to a 767 on final at MIA.....got shaken up pretty good!thanks for all helpchris

It sounds to me like this may well have been caused by ActiveSky switching to a different FD reporting station with very different reported wind direction/speed. From the sound of it, you may have your FSUIPC wind settings set incorrectly as well. I keep mine set to allow 1-degree or 1kt of change per second, and would recommend you try a similar setting. With the default setting, winds change almost instantly, which can be more than any autothrottle can cope with. With 1-degree/1kt of change per second set, the autothrottle is more able to deal with the wind-changes after switching to a new reporting station (or receiving updated wind information). The transition is also a bit more realistic (IMO).Even so, you still need to be aware of how close you are to your aircraft's VNE speed, and you need to keep a close eye on your indicated airspeed. For most of my flights I fly Boeing 737's, and I stick pretty close to their recommended cruise speeds (.74M or .78M). If I'm behind schedule, I may push them to .80M, but only if I am able to watch closely because an unexpected headwind may push my speed up past the VNE speed of .82M.In any case, this is just one of the many reasons why airline Captains don't leave the cockpit unattended during a flight -- and it's a definite concern for real-life aviators.Good luck and fly safe!Andy SutterMA825/KSFOkZAU ARTCC/STU+

...still no luck.i un-checked simulated winds aloft, and verified my FSUIPC settings and everything looks good.here's what i tried last night.......took off from Vail (KEGE), as i was climbing thru FL200 my speed was reading 546mph and climnbing. obviously not right. i then closed down Activesky, cleared all weather, then downloaded FS's real weather. everything ran fine...including my 737 slowing down to the correct speed setting. hmmm... so i then disconnected real weather, cleared all weather, fired up Activesky again and...zooom...away went my speed again.something else wierd..... with Activesky running, i tried to reset my speed to read true rather than indicated and all hell broke loose. with my autopilot on, my plane veered right and went into a steep descent. i could control it with my yoke but it still didn't make sense. i then closed Activesky, got FS real weather again and my plane then acted normally and found its way back on course.does anyone have any ideas on this? the only other thing i could think of was to delete my FS2002.cfg file and start all over. thankschris

Hi Chris,Haven't heard of this one before... Airspeed is listed in KNOTS not MPH, btw (with most panels). Perhaps you are having ICING problems? Can you confirm that your pitot heat is on? I could use a screenshot of the main and status screens (and FS2002 showing the speed) - please e-mail to [email protected] and I will take a look. ok...you got it. i'll have some time tonight and i'll get some screenies your way.in FS is it possible to have icing in clear conditions? my flight last night was void of any clouds. also...is there a way to turn winds aloft off? i'd like to try that too...if anything, just for process of elimination.wierd stuff!thankschris
