no visibility

Featured Replies

Sorry, but I've searched the forum and couldn't find any answer to my problem. I use the freeware version of active sky (1.5) ..on approach to some airports, everytime to ESMS, Active sky seems to give up on me and I get everything to zero. NO visibility, nothing. The first times I thought it just was bad weather but that isn't the case. Has any other one experienced this?/Stefan

Hi, can you share a screenshot of the main and status screens? This will help me identify the problem.. thanks!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

I've also noticed wxRE sometimes generating zero (or near zero) vis when there is no reason for it except a low cloudcover.Strangely closing ActiveSky and clearing all weather in FS has little effect. After a minute or so FS resets visibility to a mile or less leaving all other weather disabled. Will try to get some screenshots for you.

Ditto for me too, only since I updated to ver 1.15 it seems. In fact, all recent flights in the YSRI (RAAF Richmond base) area have been blanketed in near zero vis (1/8 mile), with various combinations of downloaded or online weather data, when the real vis has been relatively unlimited. eg. METAR for YSRI is being reported by ActiveSky wxRE as: YSRI 310300Z 11020KT //// 31/11 Q1010. Within a min or so, vis drops to 1/8 mile (confirmed by the FS2K2 advanced weather tab). I know that the vis data is missing from this METAR, but shouldn't the weather default to max vis if this data is missing.BTW, this phenonemon was also occuring at PHNL the other day with a fuller METAR string, but I didn't have the benefit of first hand weather exposure (ie. being there) to know whether it was right or not.Edit: Just reinstalled ver 1 and, with METAR of YSRI 020200Z 03008KT //// 30/10 Q1011, the skys are clear as they should be. I saw in an earlier post that Damian already knows of this issue with the 1.15 update and will hopefully fix in the next update.GaryPS. Other than this vis issue, I am a very satisfied customer of ActiveSky WxRE. Keep up the good work Damian!

OK, found out what was happening. For some reason ActiveSky had reset itself to using downloaded weather (in other words, it had set itself to offline mode for some reason) and the last download just happened to have a cloudbase overcast 200ft where my field elevation was 500ft.

I know that jwenting says his problem has gone away, but mine is still present and I have gone back to ver 1 until there is a fix. Damien, please confirm that this issue is in your to do list for the next version thx.Gary

>YSRI 310300Z 11020KT //// 31/11 Q1010. Within a min or so, Actually /// means that no *vertical* visibility can be give. This means that there is no noticeable cloud ceiling. Usually the reason is that fog merges into low clouds with no destinctive transition. This is pretty much the poorest weather condition you can have and most likely the trigger for CAT III operation.

It's not quite gone away. I still see AS putting the visibility down to 0 (which at the time I tried originally was correct on reading back the METAR).Problem is the visibility stays 0 even when weather improves.I've turned off the "reduce visibility in rain" and "reduce visibility in clouds" options but AS still sets visibility to 0 in clouds and rain sometimes.

Hi there,This is because there is no visibility reported in the METAR. An issue with limited logic during METAR parsing with the freeware AS. Additional logic in wxRE will better handle these missing METAR elements.-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

I'm using WXre...Not as much as I did using the freeware version but it's still there.

Ok Thanks for the explanation! So you think I'll be seeing weather at ESMS if I get the payware version?/Stefan

Hi Gary..And all..Getting confusing here, there are 3 different folks with 3 different "issues"."//// = 0 vis" is fixed in v1.2 pending release very soon. This applies to wxRE and Australian METAR stations."No vis reported, defaults to 0 vis" is a limitation in the freeware AS2002 v1.5. wxRE provides enhanced logic to provide random visibility when it is missing from the report."0 vis in almost all cases" - the user had loaded an offline set that was very bad visibility in the area he/she was flying in. -Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Hi,I am not sure which issue you are having, this thread has gotten a bit confusing. But please supply me with some screenshots and more info of what you are experiencing.. so far it does not sound like anything else reported. Thanks!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Yes, and if no visibility is reported, it will be randomly generated.Thanks!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table
