February 7, 200323 yr Ben^2, all good in theory but I work at YSRI and the weather on the day time in question was as clear as a bell! A problem with the METAR perhaps?
February 7, 200323 yr Will try (it looks not to be quite consistent, plus I have to find some suitable weather too :-)).Attempt at better description:When I sit on the ground or fly for a while through low overcast ActiveSky WXre will set a visibility of 1/8 to 1/4nm.When getting out of those clouds, visibility is not always reset to a larger number. When manually resetting it in the weather menu in FS it usually stays set.I have the checkboxes for decreased visibility in clouds and rain turned off to see if that makes a difference but it isn't 100% effective. In the example, the METAR reads (form awfulweather.com):CYMX 070700Z 06009KT 3/4SM -SN VV010 M10/M13 A3003 RMK SN8 VSBY VRBL 5/8-1 /S02/ SLP174 AS correctly reads this (up to the A3003, rest seems discarded). It then goes and sets the visibility to 1/8nm instead of 3/4 as it should.I've seen similar behaviour at places where the clouds bottom out below the runway altitude. Visibility just doesn't improve when you climb above the clouds (at one point I was flying at 10000ft and still had 1/8nm visibility from an overcast layer I had climbed through earlier that topped out at about 3000ft when I manually turned visibility back up).
February 7, 200323 yr Hi Damian et alThe visibility and ceiling is reported by the CAVOK (Cloud/Ceiling And Visibility OK) code. Don't know if wxRE interprets that, and if it does, how it interprets it. When CAVOK is reported I guess there are certain minimum criteria that has to be met.EDITED: Criteria as per the swedish meterological and hydrological institute (SMHI)CAVOK=Horizontal visibility more than 10km, 9999Cloud ceiling over 5000 feetNo CBNo "weather" ;-)Maybe you can shed some light on this, Damian?Regards
February 7, 200323 yr Commercial Member Hi there,That is exactly how wxRE handles CAVOK ;)-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
