April 1, 200323 yr Since I've purchased ActiveSky v1.6 (Friday), I have experienced several FS crashes (Send error report). I had only had one such crash in the past 5 years with FS98, FS2000, and/or FS2002. Each time it is a different module. Just now, FS crashed as I approached Gate C-21 at KIAH after completing a flight from KMFE. Previously, I had attempted the flight and FS crashed when I selected Flight Plan from the FS Menu. I have figured out that it crashes if I start FS, position myself at the departure airport, start ActiveSky, then try to load my FS flight plan. I use Radar Contact with FS ATC in the VFR mode. I'm getting frustrated and even though I really like what ActiveSky does for FS, I'm about to go back to FSMeteoe where I had no crashes. Is there some trick to getting ActiveSky to work?Steve Lewis, KCLE
April 1, 200323 yr I'll be interested in seeing what suggestions or recommendations you receive as I too just experienced my first such crash last night near the end of a 2hr IFR flight plan in FS2002Pro. I had just been vectored by ATC from the nearest VOR to intercept the destination ILS and was following initial descent instructions when I suddenly received the MSFS2k2 crash screen. It's been so long since I last had such a crash on FS that I wondered also if it might have been caused by my recent install of ActiveSky V. 1.6.I always start FS2k2, place the aircraft at the departure airport, load the flight plan, set the trim tabs, initial departure heading, etc.. I then "Clear" the current weather and switch to ActiveSky to start its initialization routine and loading of online weather data. This procedure has worked flawlessly for the nine days and nights I have used ActiveSky until last night. I first suspected a current spike, but my wife's computer never faltered (on LAN and one cable modem) and the lights didn't flicker. I duplicated the same situational setup tonight--same departure/destination, flight plan, altitudes--and it worked without a hitch.I find the MSFS "Crash" window with all its "click here" options interesting as the mouse ceases to function with the onset of the crash and one has to resort to tabbing his way about the "Crash" window's options and hitting Enter to "Send a description of this crash to MS," or whatever. Wonder if anyone has ever received a clarifying reply from MS to this, or "Dr. Watson," which is much the same routine? Russ Fromholz
April 1, 200323 yr Author I haven't been "clearing" my weather so maybe that's the problem. I have had 5 good flights so far with FS2k2 PRO, ActiveSky 1.6, and Radar Contact. I've had at least that same number of crashes -- including 3 in a row on Saturday. I'll clear the weather prior to loading ActiveSky next time to see what happens. As I said earlier, I've only had one FS Crash in the past 5 years and now at least 5 (more likely 10) since Friday.Steve
April 2, 200323 yr Commercial Member Hi Steve,I don't think the clearing the wx has anything to do with this but it is worth a try.One thing to do is to isolate wxRE as the application causing the crash. Since you have been experiencing crashes often at this moment, please try running a few flights without wxRE running. Just to ensure that the problem is not with some other add-on or setting you may have recently installed/changed (has been somewhat common - worth looking into). Let me know the results. Also there is a v1.7 beta out (see top of forum for DL link) which is worth a shot to see if it improves anything for you. April 2, 200323 yr Steve,I just found and installed this* latest XP "Critical Update" tonight (4/1/03). Are you, as I am, using WindowsXP? You don't suppose this could have anything to do with our recent MSFS crashes could it?Nah, I don't think so either. I am on an "always on" cable modem, but it's behind an excellent firewall with AV and trojan hunter programs that consistently turn up "no unwanted visitors." Also, the last MSFS program crash I had some years back had nothing to do with ActiveSky. On the other hand, the statement, "An attacker would need the ability to connect to a process on the computer" bothers me a bit considering I am always online with ActiveSky updating winds aloft etc. .Russ*"331953: Security Update (Windows XP)Download size: 824 KB, < 1 minuteA security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to cause a computer running Microsoft
April 2, 200323 yr Author I'll go back and do a couple of flights with FSMeteoe to see if I can replicate the crash. If none occurs, I will go back to ActiveSky and try that to see if it occurs again. Last weekend, I had 3 crashes before I finally got it up and running to fly CLE-PHL.I'm running Windows 98SE, am on a cable modem without a firewall, and have my McAfee virus protection disabled to fly. I do a fresh reboot prior to loading up FS2k2 deleting all running programs except systray and explorer. I usually do a RegClean also as I often have problems with the registry -- even in my brand new computer.Steve KCLE
April 2, 200323 yr Author Well, I guess it's not ActiveSky afterall. I downloaded Nick Botamer's new ERJ135 tonight when I got home and wanted to set it up at KCLE. I started FS2k2, selected my Mike Stone ERJ145 at KCLE and then chose Aircraft/Select Aircraft/Nick's ERJ135. As soon as it changed I got the FS Crash screen -- ActiveSky wasn't even running yet! The FS Crash screen mentioned damage.dll as the module causing the trouble. (This has been the culprit most of the other times, also.)I ran MSCONFIG and un-checked all start up programs mentioning Rundll32 (3 of them) and started out again. (This left me with only Systray and Explorer running.) I then rebooted and ran RegClean -- no errors.I started up FS2k2 and did the exact same sequence as above with no crash. I selected Nick's 135 and saved it, went into FSNav and planned my flight for tonight and didn't have a problem. So, I apologize for assuming that it was ActiveSky. I will use it tonight while I fly KCLE-KDCA and report back. Should go ok, I think. Steve KCLE
April 3, 200323 yr Author I tried to start up FS2k2 again and, once again, got the Fatal Error due to damage.dll. I get this error right after I enter my Flight Plan in FS2k2 using the FS2k2 Flight Plan option. (I use FSNav4.5 for my flight planning and only use the FS2k2 Flight Planner so I can use Radar Contact v3.1)I need some help. Also, this is occurring at KCLE Terminal D which is an Add On Scenery.Steve KCLE
April 3, 200323 yr Steve,Could be a bad damage.dll file. If you can do it, extract damage.dll from CD#1 from the FS2002 folder. If you can't do it, then drop me a personal e-mail and I'll send it back to you as an attachment. I extracted it and it's ready to go for ya! It ends up in the Modules sub-folder.JimActiveSky Support
April 3, 200323 yr Author Jim, If you would, please e-mail me that damage.dll file. I finally got my flight in and here's how I did it: After starting up FS2k2 and going to my ERJ135 @ KCLE Gate D-6 I went to the spot view and used the Slew mode to slightly adjust the a/c. Before exiting Slew I hit the "A" key which set me firmly on the ground. I then proceeded to fly my flight normally with no problems. Could be that the new a/c was slightly off the ground (?) as I have had some problems with RCv3.0 at Term D in KCLE. This doesn't explain the Crash I had on Saturday as I approached Gate C21 at KIAH, however. So, it could be a combination of a bad damage.dll file and the scenery.Anyway, ActiveSky performed flawlessly tonight.Steve KCLE
April 3, 200323 yr Steve,Ok, but I can't send an attachment using forum mail. I need you to send me a message then I can reply with the attachment.Sounds like you got a bunch of things going on. Can you try a default plane at an airport that has not been modified? Then what happens? We're going to get this!! Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support
