January 20, 200422 yr Hi there,I'm using XP, FS2k2 and ver.191 and I find the frame rate just drops, mostly a lower altitudes (say 6000ft) to around 1 or 2 fps. As soon as I shut Activesky, it shoots back up again. My question is this:Firstly, why does it do this? I don't notice any particular increase in the quality of the output!Secondly, is there anything I can change to stop this happening, other than closing Activesky as soon as I get close to my destination? It's really a pain in the arse!! :)Hope someone can help, I looked in the archive and I didn't find anything really similar. Thanks a lot,Tom
January 20, 200422 yr Hi Tom,A strange one indeed. Please post your wxRE.ini file and I'll take a look at your settings. Also, your major system specs may help.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support
January 20, 200422 yr Thanks... I've just re-installed activesky and 'down-graded' FSUIPC back to 2.9x... I'll post again if it happens again and if it solves the problem for future users. In the meantime, I've copied over the .ini file so I can't post it. Thanks again, I'll let you know the news...Regards,Tom
January 21, 200422 yr TomYOU ARE NOT ALONE!!I too am having this exact same problem. I had after I installed the lastest FSUIPC 3.14 and the SU1.3 pmdg patch (did both together what a foool).I had no problems with this prior............Gonna try the 3.13 version of fsuipc to see if that sorts it.Steve
January 21, 200422 yr I think I have established the problem.I reinstalled an older version of fsuipc and ran pmdg737/700 on takeoff from egll. 20fps no probsDid it again with 314 - no problem. Both of the above were with as2004 running. When Active radar was turned on the fps fell to 1!!!before rising to 4!! and staying there. They stayed at 4fps even when I truned active radar off!!I have a properly installed as2004 over wide fs running the latets alpha patch.I cannot use active radar in flight without the thing turning to a slide showSteve
January 22, 200422 yr That's really interesting, I'm going to do a flight this morning with the old settings (FSUIPC 2.9xxx) and I think that's going to have solved the problem.Strange. Of course, we're using different versions of FSUIPC, but stil..Tom
January 22, 200422 yr Ok, "problem" still there. I'm beginning to suspect it's just a reflection of my system. Here's what I'm flying:PSS DashOnlineFSUIPC 2.975Activesky 1.92Windows XPFS2k2System1.8Ghz32Mb (Yeah, I know) NVidia Graphics Card512MB RAMThis gives me a steady 15fps but whenever there are clouds, the frame rate plummets to about 4-6fps. Is this about right, or could I improve it? I mean, Activesky is great, but I can't deal with this rate collapse!By the way, when Activesky is active and it reports clear conditions, the frame rates don't suffer, which is what made me think it might be my own sytem.Hope someone can point me in the right direction,Tom
January 22, 200422 yr Looking at that system Tom and not flying the PSS Dash I would say your graphics card is the big problem as clouds do have a big impact on FPS.Are you using the 'friendlier' clouds by Chris Wills (FSW)?They will help as well as turning down some of your display settings, cloud draw distance and visibility distance. When you can afford an upgrade I suggest graphics card first, then RAM and finally CPU.HTH
January 22, 200422 yr Thanks.... that sounds useful. What sort of graphics card should I be looking at? My realistic budget would be about

January 22, 200422 yr Have a look in the MS General forum here at AVSIM, there are many threads about choosing graphics cards which should give you an idea of what people use, just watch out for those prices ;-)The clouds are free (thanks Chris) and available from herehttp://simflight.com/fsw/HTH Tom
January 22, 200422 yr Commercial Member Hi Steve,Note that the original issue here was referring to wxRE not AS2004, so that does not really apply..As for Radar Performance, some systems can't do higher detail very well. You can always turn down your detail options. On an old P3-700 I test with I can get acceptable performance with details off and low-medium resolution. Remember that radar processing occurs any time activeradar is powered on. The more rain around, and the more METAR stations reporting it, the less performance will be. Some folks perfer to use higher detail radar options during the cruise portion of their flight (when frames are generally high and demands are low) and then either turn off activeradar (using power button then CTRL-F12) or turn down detail options before the approach. On my XP2400+ test system I use details on and high resolution and don't get any real performance hit unless I'm in a very dense METAR station area with lots of variable rain/snow hits. When this happens I just turn down the detail a notch and everything is smooth.Experimenting with these options is your best bet, I'm sure you can find something that gives you a good balance of detail and performance.. let me know if that helps!Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyhttp://www.hifisim.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
January 23, 200422 yr Damian Just to be clear (I would hate to cause offence) -I wasn't panning your product! AS2004 is worth every euro, and I am a happy WXRE upgraderI am running a P4 2g with 1g rdram and a GeoF Ti 500 64mb (yeah I know i should upgrade that) and I will play around with the settings and see what happens.I will report the outcome - good or no change (bad not being the right adjective)Ta for the responseSteve
January 26, 200422 yr WellMessed around with settings, downloaded and installed FSW clouds and it all works like a charm (but Damian u knew it would).only thing gotta start as2004 first else I cant get active radar to show on the second PCTa for a great add onSteve
