Runways don't correspond to wind direction?

Featured Replies

I just began using Active Sky and it seems to work well, except that the FS9 runway assignments don't follow the wind direction. Specifically: KATL winds 310 at 8 knots, but ATIS and Ground says RWY 8L/R and 9L/R are in use. Same thing when nearing my destination airport - KORF, winds are 240 at 9, but runway in use is 5. Any idea why this might be happening? Thanks for your help!

Hi,When you first start FS / load a scenery area, ATC will default all runway assignments to the weather existing at that time. Wind direction change by AS will take time for ATC to recognize (approx 10 minutes). You can speed up the process by advancing the FS time slightly after weather is initially set by AS (resetting the AI/ATC info). Hope that helps!-Damian

Damian,Does that also explain the situation at destination?Steve

Hi Steve..Oops, missed that part. No, this does not pertain to the destination issue described. If the winds are indeed set correctly at the SURFACE layer then FS9 will set the landing runway accordingly. One possibility is that the winds have just switched prior to landing (via update), and AI aicraft are still using their previously assigned runway until ATC has a chance to reset runways. To the original poster: Please elaborate a bit on how you are noting the problem. Are you using shift-z to compare wind direction/landing runway? If so, realize that the winds at the surface are often different from that aloft. Comparisons should be made via the METAR string or ATIS.-Damian

I made this observation when "flying" into Norfolk. The ATIS winds were as stated, but the runway in use was 05 which meant I landed into a tailwind along with the arriving and departing AI traffic. Let me say, however, that I now recall I forgot to enter a flight plan at start-up showing my destination. Would that have been the difference at my arrival airport? Again, I apologize for being a new user if that was the problem.
