August 23, 200421 yr Hello,I've noticed a couple of instances where rainfall is shown on the Active Radar screen at my location but no rainfall is seen. This is using the latest beta (140). I seem to remember the METAR did mention rain but I can't be sure. Has this happended to anybody else? If not I'll try to get more information if it happens againVictor
August 23, 200421 yr Hi,Yes, rain must be in the METAR. Not too much nationwide rain right now. Some in south Texas and some heavier stuff in the mid central states. Weather.com is a good place to find general information and I know there are others!Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
August 23, 200421 yr Hi Jim,But what about rain showing in the METAR and on Active Radar but not actually being seen at the location?Victor
August 23, 200421 yr Not exactly sure what you mean by "location". At ground level rain should always show up in FS, AS, and AR. If you are in the air, rain should show up in AS and AR, but in FS you might be flying above the rain. Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
August 23, 200421 yr I think I was flying at 5,000ft and could see clearly to the ground. My AS was showing I was in the middle of rain and, as far as I remember, the nearest METAR indicated rain or any likely precipitation in the area. However, I couldn't actually see any rain. As it seems there aren't any others with a similar problem I'll try and see if I can see an instance of it this evening and if I do I'll post more details.
August 23, 200421 yr I won't requote them but in the release notes for the latest FSUIPC update (beta released with build 140) some precipitation reporting fixes were noted. These may apply.
August 24, 200421 yr I might be thinking of the AS release notes since this version of FSUIPC is not distributed except in the AS update as a dll. FWIW, this radar recognition of precip has also been complained about in the Reality-XP forum regarding their WX500 Radar product.I am familiar with Doppler Radar from a ground based station as used by TV meteroligists. Even though no precip is falling beneath clouds, it still we detect cloud precip including the ice crystals in clouds. If you are altitude near above or below the cloud bases, you would be very likely to see a return from precip based cloud particles above the lightest of moisture densities. I saw this recently on the Reality product when descending through broken clouds of a very dark appearance indicating saturation although there was no falling precip below them.
